All kinds of music styles:1. Classical music 古典音乐Classical music was the music of European courts(欧洲宫廷)and big concert halls. Classical music refers to orchestral (管弦乐的)music of the 18th and early19th century. Beethoven and Mozart (莫扎特)are two of the most famous classical composers(作曲家).2. folk music 民族音乐Folk Music, the music with which the people of a nation or an ethnic(种族的) group most specifically identify(区别) themselves. Folk music is most commonly the music of the socially and economically lower classes(阶级,阶层).3. jazz 爵士乐Jazz has been called “the art of expression set to music”, and “ America’s great contribution to music”. What made Jazz different from the other earlier forms of music was the use of improvisation(即兴创作). Louis Armstrong was considered as the most successful musicians of Jazz and later one of the biggest stars in the world.4. pop / popular music 流行音乐5. rock "n" roll 摇滚乐Rock 'n' roll &rock-and-roll: a form of popular music arising(产生,出现) from and incorporating (合并) a variety of musical styles, especially rhythm and blues, country music, and gospel(黑人福音音乐). Elvis Presley (猫王)and the Beatles(披头士)were the big names of rock ‘n’roll.6. blues蓝调音乐Blues started off as the music of African slaves(非洲奴隶)brought to the United States. It is closely related to the music of West Africa. In many ways, blues music is an important element (元素)in many of today’s popular tunes (流行曲子).7. R&B (HIP-HOP) 节奏蓝调8. RAP 说唱9. Lesson 82Step 1 Revision1 Check the homework.2 Revise words about music: rock band, pop, concert, singer, Beatles, piano, violin, etc.Step 2 Pre-readSB Page 32, Part 1. In small groups have the students discuss the questions. Students may get some information from Notes to the texts at the back of the Students‘ Book. Then ask What kinds of music do you like? If you have tapes of different music, play some and discuss what kinds of music they are, and what the students like and dislike about the different types of music. Some examples of music that can be found in China are pop music, both Chinese and Western, classical, rap (吟快板, a type of rhythmic talk ing, which is accompanied by music), rock’n roll, folk music, both Chinese and Western, jazz and blues, etc. If you know someone, or you yourself can sing well, invite them to sing some songs that are of different kinds of music.Step 3 Presentation1 Play a tape or CD of some music by Beethoven. When playing the tape, have the students close their eyes and feel the music. Then discuss what they felt, i.e. happy, sad, comforting, etc.2 Talk a little about Beethoven. He was born on Dec. 16, 1770 in Bonn, Germany. He was a child prodigy who became a great composer and musician. His father died when he was only eighteen years old. From that time on he had to provide for himself and his two younger brothers. To do this, he played the viola in an orchestra. In 1792 Haydn, a famous composer at the time, saw Beethoven perform and realized he was a very talented musician. He asked him to come to Vienna, Austria with him and study under him. Beethoven did, and became a great composer. His music was filled with his own emotions which created a new style of music at the time. His Moonlight Sonata was actually written for his love of Countess Giulietta who refused to marry him. Later on in his life, Beethoven became deaf and had to compose his music entirely in his head without ever hearing a note of it himself. He died on March 26, 1827.Step 4 ReadingSB Page 32, Part 2, Speech Cassette Lesson 82. If available, play a song from Beethoven quietly while the students read the text silently to themselves (It has been proven that playing classical music while studying helps one to take in more information). Then say Tell me something about the girl in the story. (She could play the piano well, she was blind and taught herself to play, etc. ) Give the students a few minutes to scan for the information about the girl. Then play the Speech Cassette and have the students listen and repeat. Teach the new vocabulary through context: poor, knock, knock at, pardon, shine, bright, brightly and through. Do Wb Lesson 82, Ex. 1.Step 5 Workbook Wb Lesson 82, Ex. 2. Students individually write a letter. Then give the letter to their partner to look over and get feedback from them.Homework Make the changes in the letter from Wb Lesson 82, Ex. 2 that the partners suggested. Revise the new vocabulary from this unit.2. Music and readingDo you like music? (Why? What kind?/Why not?)Is music important to you? You should say:Whether you like music or not. What kind of music you like most. What role music plays in people's lives.1.a) If I had to describe a kind of music that I like, I would say that it is pop music.b) I am sure you are familiar with that kind of music2.a) I like music very much.b) That is to say, I cannot imagine what my life would be like without music.3.a) I believe music plays an important part in people's lives. b) For example, we can use it to sooth our minds after a hard day at work, or it can provide us with the rhythm to dance to.There are several reasons as for why I would like to talk specifically about pop music. Allow me to explain bymentioning some of them briefly.4.a) First of all, pop music is lively, and suits me at my age.b) What I mean to say is that us youngsters like to listen to music that fits in with the way we feel5.a) Secondly, usually has a good rhythm.b) For instance, it is suitable for us to dance to in the nightclubs.6.a) Lastly, pop music is simple to understand. b) That is to say, I like it because it does not have complicated lyrics, and it helps me to relax after I have been studying hard for some time.7. So, those were some thoughts on my favorite type of music.喜欢所有音乐,小时侯弹过四年电子琴,所以一直对古典情有独衷;后来迷上欧美乐坛,BSB,BOYZONE, WESTLIFE,911,TAKE THAT,98DEGREE,SPICE GIRLS,等等等等,流行的基本都听过,CHARLOTTE CHURCH,BOYZ II MEN,BON JOVI,SCORPIONS,SUEDE.LP等等,各方面的音乐我都有涉及,那几百张CD就是证明,当然因为从古典起家,所以还是喜欢旋律好的,歌词基本不细听,但象BSB的我基本每首都会唱直到现在依然喜欢后街男孩的歌,我觉得那就是流行乐的颠峰了,BLACK AND BLUE,MILLENIUM,这是我听过的最好的专辑.直到最近两年才开始听国内港台的歌,主要是因为买了MP3,没事BAIDU一下,随便下几首,所有主流的基本都听过,而且因为有音乐基础,所以基本听过一遍就能记住旋律,至少不会跑调。
