Klingbeil, 18, had to go through months of chemotherapy (化疗) and radiation treatments after her diagnosis, which left her too weak to compete. The COVID-19 left Klingbeil away from her teammates as school went virtual and track meets were canceled. She faced another challenge recently when doctors discovered her cancer had returned, leading to more chemotherapy.Despite the challenges, Klingbeil’s track coach, Rob Cloutier, reached out to her to see if she would like to join her teammates in a tradition in which seniors run the 4x100 race at the last home track meet of the season. “I told her to run the anchor leg, which is the final leg of the race,” said Cloutier. “I wanted her to be able to do it one last time.”Hearing the news, Klingbeil was excited. When it washer turn, her three race teammates came to her side and walked the track with her. The entire Shen High School track team also walked along with Klingbeil from the field and then rushed and cheered for her when she crossed the finish line. “That was a great surprise,” Klingbeil said, “I feel accomplished because crossing the line was a perfect end of my high school track career.”Cloutier said he had watched Klingbeil go through her cancer battle with that same level of determination, saying “She’s worked through this challenge in her life without a single complaint and with a smile on her face. Everyone who has witnessed her can learn a little bit from that.”4.Why couldn’t Klingbeil continue her track career?A.She hurt her muscle badly. One type of crab, known as the decorator crab, has found a clever solution. It “decorates” itself. Decorator crabs use seaweed to change their appearances so that predators (捕食者) will not recognize them.More than 100 species of decorator crabs are found all over the world. One species, commonly called the longnose spider crab, takes decorating to a whole new level. The ocean floor was covered in seaweed, but these crabs wouldn’t use just any kind they found. “They were very, very picky, and things they pick were quite uncommon.”says Dr. Stachowicz of the University California. He noticed that longnose spider crabs would grab a piece of seaweed and take a little bite. Sometimes they would just eat the seaweed. Other times, they would reach back and attach the piece to the small hairs on their back. These crabs were choosing to decorate themselves with seaweed that has a peppery-tasting (胡椒味) chemical in it. Most fish find this chemical unappetizing. “If the crabs just decorated to look like the background, they would be giving their predators a little side salad with the main course.” says Dr. Stachowicz. But by carefully choosing the peppery seaweed, these decorator crabs look less tasty and predators avoid them.Once a longnose spider crab has put together a good suit to protect itself, it is set for a while. The seaweed continues to grow even while it’s stuck to the crab’s back. When a crab sheds (去除) its old shell, it has to redecorate, often using seaweed from its old shell. Basically, the crab recycles.8.How do the longnose spider crabs differ from other decorator crabs?A.They like eating seaweed.B.They pick seaweed carefully.C.They have small hairs on their back.D.They use any seaweed to decorate themselves.9.What does the underlined word “unappetizing” in paragraph 3 probably mean? She is remembered as an excellent luthier. A luthier is a person who makes stringed instruments, such as violins and guitars.Hutchins was a primary school science teacher. She took up the viola (中提琴) at 36. But she wasn’t satisfied with the viola she bought. Since she was a skilled woodworker, she decided to build one herself. For more than 50 years, she carved (雕刻) stringed instruments. Hutchins worked from her home — often in her kitchen. She used a scientific method to carve them. Over the years, she made around 500 instruments. Her method is still used. It helps luthiers carve high-quality stringed instruments.Hutchins also created a family of eight violins known as the violin octet. They change in size and tone (音调). “It’s how the instrument is carved that makes it a violin,” Joe McNalley says. He is the founder of the Hutchins Consort, a group that plays the octet. The four instruments in the string family are violin, viola, cello, and bass. They cannot play the lowest or highest notes of the piano. They play the notes in between. Hutchins created a family of eight violins that play all the notes a piano plays.D.Quincy Whitney has written a book about Hutchins. “For centuries, musicians had talked about creating a family of violins that had a total string sound as wide as a piano,” she said.Hutchins was an artist and a scientist. A big part of her dream was to create top-quality instruments that were affordable. “Her story is about how one person can not only make a difference,” says Whitney, “but can change a whole world.”12.Why did Hutchins start to make stringed instruments?A.She hoped to create a better viola.B.She was not satisfied with her career.C.She expected to be a skilled woodworker.D.She wanted to teach her students about music.13.What do we know about Hutchins?A.She headed the Hutchins Consort.B.She is very good at playing the octet.C.She learned a simple method to make instruments.D.She is a pioneer in the design of stringed instruments.14.Different from the traditional violin family, the violin octet _____.A.is easier to make B.has the same sizeC.produces richer sounds D.is less enjoyed by musicians 15.What is Whitney’s attitude to Hutchins?A.Respectful.

Every year — for more than 15 years running — Amazon editors come together and read hundreds of books. From there, they make a list of favorites, cutting it down from 60 to 40 and then finally to 20, during a heated debate in Seattle. It’s a long process where emotions run high. Below are 4 of the top 20 picks of 2023, along with quotes (引述) from the editors.Hello Beautifulby Ann Napolitano“Ann Napolitano creates a touching story that centers on the Padavano sisters, who are close to each other — until they aren’t. Hello Beautiful offers big emotions, and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful and so page-turning, which is why we named it the Best Book of 2023 So Far.” — Al WoodworthWeywardby Emilia Hart“Though divided by centuries, three women, who share a unique connection to the natural world and to one another, tell their attractive stories of ill treatment, danger, and adaptability in a beautifully written novel that is an impressive read.” — Seira WilsonPoverty, by Americaby Matthew Desmond“In 200 powerful and critical pages, Matthew Desmond lays out a clear explanation of inequality that will make you rage (发怒), give in, and feel shame. This book may not be the easiest read, but it’s one of the most important ones.” — Lindsay PowersKing: A Lifeby Jonathan Eig“Eig’s best description of Martin Luther King Jr. is an amazing achievement of writing and research, telling the hardships and heroics of a man who changed the world. This is biography at its absolute finest.” — Al Woodworth1.How many books have been finally chosen as the best of 2023 by Amazon editors?A.Four.B.Twenty.C.Forty.D.Sixty.2.What makes Hello Beautiful stand out?A.Moving stories.B.Powerful pages.C.Big emotions.D.Impressive characters.3.Which book best attracts people interested in the lives of famous people?A.Hello Beautiful.B.Weyward.C.Poverty, by America.D.King: A Life.At Manzo Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona, raising fish at school was one small answer to a big problem: many people in the neighborhood did not have enough food to eat.The students could eat breakfast and lunch at school, but their families didn’t always have enough money to provide dinner. Buying fresh foods, such as vegetables and meat, was difficult. Then the teachers had an idea: could the students raise food at school for the neighborhood? The project wouldn’t be easy to carry out. Tucson is in a desert, so water is a precious resource. Soil in the desert doesn’t always have the nutrients plants need to grow, so the students would need to add a natural fertilizer (肥料).Counselor (顾问) Moses Thompson read about aquaponics, a way of growing fish and plants together for food. Hundreds of years ago, the Aztecs built “floating farms” called chinampas on the lakes outside what is now Mexico City. Inspired by that, Moses helped the school set up a system in which fish waste fertilizes plants, and the plants’ roots clean the water in the fish tank.Fish aren’t the only animals that help students feed their neighbors. Chickens lay eggs. Visiting pollinators help turn flowers into beans, tomatoes and so on. “Bees and butterflies come,” says Santiago, aged 10.When the students have raised enough food, it’s time for Market Day. Vegetables are available for donation to people in the neighborhood. Students sell eggs and tilapia (罗非鱼) to raise money for seeds, fish food and chicken food.“People don’t have a lot of money, so it’s a nice dream we have to give them food,” says Emmanuel, aged 11. “It’s an opportunity to be healthy and eat better.”“We can plant good food and have fun while we’re doing something important,” saysBlanka, aged 10. “I’m so happy to be at this school.”4.What is the purpose of the project?A.To promote harmony between family and school.B.To provide part-time jobs for the students.C.To increase income of the school teachers.D.To feed poor people in the local neighborhood.5.What can we know about the system of aquaponics?A.It needs an added natural fertilizer to function.B.It suits a desert environment like Tucson best.C.It belongs to a sustainable farming method.D.It has long been used in the United States.6.What does the underlined word “pollinators” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?A.Some fishes.B.Some experts.C.Some technologies.D.Some insects.7.What can we learn about the project from the last three paragraphs?A.It receives a warm welcome.B.It helps earn much money.C.It needs to be more creative.D.It takes ages to see the results.Coffee plants grow wild in Ethiopia, Africa and were probably used by local people for thousands of years, but it wasn’t until the 1400s that people found they could roast (烘烤) its seeds. Then it really took off. By the 1500s, the drink had spread across the Arab world. Within another 150 years, it took Europe by storm.“It actually had a major influence on the rise of business,” says historian Pendergrast. Coffeehouses became a spot not just to enjoy a cup but to exchange ideas. Literature, newspapers and even some great musical works were also produced in coffeehouses. It is often said that after the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when American police raided (突击搜查) British tea ships and threw boxes of tea into the harbor, Americans universally changed over to drinking coffee. In a letter John Adams, the Founding Father, declared his love of tea but said he would have to learn to accept coffee instead, because drinking tea meant not supporting America. For all the upsides coffee has brought the modern world, it also resulted in downsides, too. Europeans carried coffee with them as they occupied various parts of the world, and this frequently meant they enslaved (奴役) people in order to grow it.“Ironically (讽刺地), to seek equality, people came together to plan the French Revolution (革命) in coffeehouses,” Pendergrast says. “But they were there drinking coffee grown by African slaves.”Today, coffee has become a powerful drink. Many people drink it for breakfast to start their day and to relax at the end of it. It not only helps keep us awake and active, it also has helped shape our history and continues to shape our culture. As Pendergrast puts it, coffee “had a very good impact in many ways on our civilization, even though it was, for a long time, grown by slaves.”8.What can we learn about coffee drinking from the first two paragraphs?A.It started thousands of years ago.B.It caused heavy rain in Europe.C.It pushed the rise of business.D.It provided many jobs for people.9.What happened after the Boston Tea Party of 1773?A.A war broke out between the USA and Britain.B.American police took control of British ships.C.Americans generally began to drink coffee.D.John Adams changed over to drinking tea.10.What is the author’s attitude to coffee?A.Positive.B.Objective.C.Negative.D.Unclear.11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A.How Coffee Influenced the Course of HistoryB.How Coffee Developed into a National DrinkC.How Coffee Made Its Way to the WorldD.How Coffee Influenced the Equality of the WorldNowadays most kids live on their digital devices. Some data show that the social media could play a role in their mental health — something that has been on the decrease among teensand tweens. But how big a role it plays also appears to depend on how kids choose to use it.In recent years, the internet has done some great things. It’s brought people closer together. It’s helped people form big communities in the world. And it can be an important place for people to find support and connection. But some adolescents (青少年) can be exposed to something harmful. For example, one 2022 survey found that nearly half of all teens have been cyberbullied (网络欺凌) online. The same survey found that nearly two in every three adolescents experienced hate-based content on social media.Social media is also a space where people are repeatedly comparing themselves to others. Am I pretty enough? Strong enough? One study of kids 13 to 17 years old found that almost half reported that time spent on social media made them feel worse about their bodies. Only about one in every seven said viewing social media made them feel better.“It’s hard to study the influence of social media on mental health,” Whitlock, a research psychologist studying internet use by adolescents, explains, “because everyone uses it.” There’s no large group of others to which researchers can compare them. Still, one study of nearly 6,600 U.S. teens linked use of social media to depression, anxiety and a poor body image. There’s still not enough evidence to say social media is safe for kids, but there was plenty of evidence to warn kids that they should take care when using it. The takeaway, Whitlock says, is that social media use needs to be intentional (有意的). By that, she means “used for some purposeful goal”, not just to pass the time.12.What use of the internet does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?A.Job hunting.B.Online shopping.C.Home schooling.D.Social networking.13.Why can teens be negatively affected in their mental health by using social media?A.They are so busy with online surveys as not to get relaxed.B.They are very likely to suffer from cyberbullying online.C.They are always compared in looks and strength.D.They are too young to deal with stress properly.14.According to Whitlock, what is the challenge for researchers?A.Not enough comparisons.B.Improper research designs.C.Too many internet users.D.Limited study periods.15.What advice is given to kids on the use of social media?A.Use it carefully, since it is linked to both good and harm.B.Try not to use it, considering the risk it may cause.C.Use it however you want, as long as there is a purpose.D.Don’t use it to kill time but for some real purpose.Sports are a great way to have fun while staying fit and enjoying time with friends. 16 The good news is, you can do a few things to feel less stress with sports. Here are 4 great ways to get started.●Change your mindset (思维方式). Think positively and develop positive self-talk. To help keep negative thoughts away, you can say things like, “I learn from my mistakes,” and “I’m in control of my feelings.” 17 Close your eyes and imagine making a shot, or scoring a goal. Think about your strongest skill rather than the one you worry about the most.● 18 If you feel stressed before a game, there are a lot of things you can do to feel calmer. D.Science.My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago. It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts. At one point, two women quarreled for several minutes in the freezer section.Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting on purpose and began to argue.Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who took him to customer service. Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line. We’ve all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. My reaction when I see them is both personal and professional. I am a data analyst and sociologist who studies how and why people interact with one another--or why they choose not to. To me, the grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has disappeared. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith —starting with just one person. Therefore, my wife and I reached the disturbed cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. We learned her name was Beth.“We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you.”I said.Beth’s face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left. That is the balancing act, the moment of countering social and emotional pain with healing, that will add up to restore trust across the United States. You can start that pattern in someone else's life , even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.4.By describing the arguments, the author wants to show________.A.the job as a cashier is not easy. B.people in the U.S are unfriendly. C.arguments in public are very common. D.confidence in each other has worn off. 5.How did Beth probably feel when the couple gave her a bottle of water? C.Uncaring D.Cautious7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.A Miserable Cashier. B.A Helping Hand.C.Learning to Trust Again. D.Starting a new life.Dolphins are universally regarded as some of the cleverest creatures in the world. In captivity(圈养), they can be trained to complete complex tasks such as jumping through hoops and somersaulting through the air.But their intelligence doesn’t stop there. In a recent study of cetaceans(鲸目动物)—a group of animals that includes dolphins and whales—researchers created a list of intelligent behaviors observed in 90 different cetacean species, reported the Guardian. For example, the smartest cetaceans hunt in groups, share knowledge through mimicry(模仿) and even care for each other’s children. Some even consider their behavior to be human-like.“There is the saying that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ seems to be true for both whales and humans,” Michael Muthukrishna of the London School of Economics, co-author of the study, told the Guardian. However, cetaceans don’t just use their brain power for survival. The study suggests that dolphins might even gossip. That’s because some species greet eachother with specific whistles, just as humans greet each other by name, the Guardian reported. Sometimes, a group of dolphins whistles the “name” of a dolphin that isn’t there. Could they be speaking about their “friend” behind its back? For the researchers, dolphin small talk is a big deal. As they found that the most social cetaceans also have the largest brains, they argue that cetacean intelligence developed to meet the demands of complex social groups.Known as the “cultural brain hypothesis(假设),” it had only been used to explain the intelligence of humans and other primates(灵长目动物). The new study aimed to find a common pathway for the evolution of intelligence among biologically different species.“It is interesting to think that whale and human brains are different in their structure but have brought us to the same patterns in behavior,” Luke Rendell, a biologist at the University of St Andrews, told the Guardian.Indeed, we still have a lot to learn about our intelligent ocean-dwelling neighbors. “We don’t have to look at other planets to look for aliens,” Muthukrishna told the Guardian, “because we know that underwater there are these amazing species with so many parallels to us in their complex behaviors.”8.The possible meaning of the underlined word “gossip” in Para. 4 is ________. A.singing B.chatting C.greeting D.arguing9.The recent study was intended to ________.A.learn more about intelligent creatures of the seaB.explain the intelligence of humans and cetaceansC.create a list of intelligent behaviors of different cetacean speciesD.see whether the intelligence of different species evolved in the same way 10.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.some cetaceans have the same intelligence as human beingsB.it is unnecessary to look for aliens and do research into themC.both dolphins and whales greet each other with specific whistlesD.both dolphins and whales have a lot in common with humans in behaviors 11.What is the best title for this passage?A.Aliens living underwaterB.A study of intelligent dolphinsC.Intelligent creatures of the seaD.Reasons for the intelligence of sea creaturesI’m rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village? It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown, river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticisms: Why didn’t we start earlier, bring the map and on and on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, text messaging a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.Just then-WOW! Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-colored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.We miss a lot, almost everything, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further? 12.Which of the following might be the destination of the author’s driving? A.A vacation spot. B.Her own home.C.A tourist centre. D.Her cousin’s farm.13.What made the author keep blaming herself in the beginning?A.That the vacation was below her expectations.B.That she wasn’t as good at using maps as before.C.That lack of full preparations got her to lose her way.D.That her cousin and daughter couldn’t get along.14.The author felt really amazed because _________.A.she discovered a tourist spot unknown to the publicB.her carelessness brought an unexpected pleasureC.she unintentionally reached what she had planned toD.the right route (路线) to her destination came out of nowhere15.What does the story intend to tell us?A.Stay cool when you are trapped in trouble.B.Make a change for the purpose of survival.C.Be positive because there's always an alternative (choice).D.Slow down your paces to enjoy beauty in life.二、七选五Tips for Upcoming Senior TwoThe upperclassmen often describe Senior Two in No.7 High as a year with “much more homework, more frequent exams and more fierce competitions”. 16●Manage your time carefully and make the most of it.Try to study not only hard but efficiently. AAndy never wanted to go to bed on time. His parents had explained to him how important it was to go to bed early and get a good rest. But Andy paid no attention to them, and they didn't know what to do until one weekend when they were visiting Andy's grandparents.Grandpa Peter heard all about it and said, "This sounds like a job for Tubby." So Andy's parents loaded the cat onto the car and returned home. That night, at bedtime, the same problem happened. Andy didn't want to go to bed, and even though his parents waited a while to see if Tubby would solve the problem, nothing happened.Hours later, Andy finally decided to go to bed. But what a surprise when he entered his bedroom! Tubby was in his bed, totally sprawling out, pot-belly in the air, and snoring like an express train.Andy tried to move the cat, but there was no way of moving him an inch. That night he hardly slept, lying on one tiny corner of his bed.The next day the same thing happened, even though Andy was much more tired from not having slept well. When the third day arrived, he had understood that if he wanted to sleep in his bed, he would have to get into it before Tubby did. That night, when his parents only started to mention the topic of bedtime, Andy rushed upstairs and dived into bed. His parents could not believe it. They knew nothing about Tubby in the bed, nor did they understand why Andy went to bed on time without complaint. They were so happy about this that they stayed up quite late, celebrating.21. Sorry if your answer is "no", because it will be common in the near future, according to the researchers from the Oxford.A third of British jobs are at "high risk" of being replaced by robots in the next 20 years, the research by Deloitte, the Oxford Martin School and the University of Oxford found.Wired magazine went further. "It may be hard to believe, but before the end of this century, 70 percent of today's jobs will be replaced by automation(自动化技术)," said the magazine in 2012.Of course, people being replaced by robots is not recent news. Robots have been taking over labor work in factories and on farms for some time, lifting heavy boxes and picking fruit and vegetables. Next, cleaning jobs in offices and schools will be taken over by late-night robots, starting with easy-to-do floors and windows and eventually moving to toilets, Wired predicted. But that's just the beginning. Even white-collar jobs are not safe. Any jobs dealing with sales and services or lots of paperwork could be taken over by robots in the future. For example, in the UK, library assistants have decreased by 48 percent since 2001, sales-related jobs have fallen by 40 percent, and travel agents by 44 percent, the Daily Mail reported. But that doesn't mean that human beings will have nothing to do in the future. Instead, we need to update our skills. Digital know-how, management and creativity will be in greater need in the future, said British Consulting Company Deloitte.29. For five days in a row, these people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, they took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin(褪黑激素) was in their blood at any time. When the people read the iPad as compared to the paper books, they felt less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion(分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half. The researchers concluded that because of the rise of e-readers and the widespread use ofe-things among children and teenagers, more research into the "long-term influence of thesee-things on health and safety is urgently needed." Czeisler and coworkers went on, in the research paper, to point out that reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk. However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers, and there are also glasses that are made to reduce short wavelengths. While they seem like a logic solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.32.
