HOW TO PRESENT A PAPERLeslie Lamport4August1979“So here I am...Trying to learn to use words, and every attempt Isa wholly new start, and a different kind of failure Because one hasonly learnt to get the better of words For the thing one no longerhas to say,or the way in which One is no longer disposed to say it.”Quotations from“East Coker”by T.S.Eliot.1.WHAT TO SAY-Don’t give your paper;the audience can’t take it.If someone canunderstand in thirty minutes what it took you weeks to develop, then you’re in the wrong business.-Do advertise your paper. The purpose of an automobile ad is to getpotential customers to the showroom, not to give technical specifi-cations.The purpose of your talk is to get people who might beinterested in your work to read the paper, not to save them the trou-ble of reading it.-Giving a good presentation is an art, requiring both practice andtalent. No rules can turn you into an artist, but the following sug-gestions might be helpful.(a)Describe simple examples rather than general results.Try tomake the examples much too simple–you will not succeed.(b)Don’t use formalism. If your results cannot be described simplyand informally, then there is no reason why anyone should beinterested in them.(c)It is better to be inaccurate than incomprehensible. The placefor accuracy is in the paper.(However, false advertising is un-ethical.)2.HOW TO SAY IT-Slides are effective. Here are some suggestions for their proper use.(a)Don’t put too much on a slide–a picture of a thousand wordsis worthless.For8x11slides,all letters should be at least3/8inch high, with plenty of blank space.People in the back rowhave to read them too.1(b)Slides should be neat and legible. The listener isn’t your secre-tary;it’s not his job to decipher your handwriting.(c)A rapid sequence of slides has a hypnotic effect.Unless you area licensed hypnotist, don’t use more than one slide per minute.-Time your talk.Running over your allotted time is a mark of in-competence,and displaying your incompetence is a poor way to getsomeone to read your paper.Remember that talking to an audiencetakes longer than talking to a mirror.3.DA CAPO-You are now thinking:“All those dull speakers I’ve listened to shoulduse these rules, but I don’t need them because my talks are inter-esting.”All those dull speakers are now thinking exactly the samething.Read the rules again with the proper humility. They apply toeveryone.“The only wisdom we can hope to acquire Is the wisdom ofhumility:humility is endless.”4.CODA-For Session Chairmen-Be utterly ruthless about enforcing time limits.Warn the speakerwhen he has10minutes left and when he has5minutes left, andstop him in midsentence when his time is up.The audience will begrateful.(A loud alarm clock works quite well if you don’t turn it offuntil the speaker hasfinished talking.)-Protect the speaker and the audience from inappropriate questions.Questions should be allowed during the talk only if the audience issmall and the question is a simple request for clarification.Afterthe talk, you must be prepared to silence the following two kinds ofquestioner.(a)One who leads the speaker into a long discussion of an obscuredetail which is of no interest to most of the audience.(b)One who monopolizes the time arguing with the speaker overunresolvable philosophical issues.Remember that silencing one person enables the rest of the audienceto ask questions.2。

上台如何讲好故事英文作文英文回答:Storytelling is a powerful tool that can captivate an audience, inspire action, and create lasting memories. When delivered effectively, a story can transform a presentation from merely informative to truly unforgettable. However, crafting and delivering a compelling story on stage requires careful planning and execution.1. Choose a Story That Resonates with Your Audience:Select a story that is relevant to your topic, relatable to your audience, and aligns with your desired message. The story should evoke emotions, create connections, and ultimately inspire your listeners to take action.2. Develop a Clear Structure:Your story should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Start with a strong hook that immediately grabs attention and sets the context. Use vivid language and sensory details to paint a picture in your audience's mind. Gradually progress through the narrative, building momentum and tension towards the climax. Conclude with a powerful resolution that leaves a lasting impact.3. Practice Delivery:Rehearsal is crucial for a successful presentation. Practice your story multiple times to ensure smoothdelivery and appropriate pacing. Use gestures, body language, and vocal variations to enhance the storytelling experience.4. Engage Your Audience:Make eye contact with your listeners and usestorytelling techniques to engage them actively. Ask rhetorical questions, invite participation, and encourage dialogue to foster a sense of connection.5. Use Visual Aids Effectively:Visual aids can complement your storytelling and make your presentation more impactful.
此外,必要时可使用一些肢体语言(physical gestures)来吸引观众的注意力(to keep your audience focused on you)。
