Personal experience
In 1865, O. Henry was 3 years old. In the same year, his mother William Potter died due to tuberculosis. This year, his father moved the whole family to living with his grandmother. He and his brother were sent to a private school run by the school. In 1885, he met a girl named Athol Porter at the age of 17, when she was in high school. On the night of July 1, 1887, Athol Estes married O. Henry in secret. O. Henry lived a very happy life with his wife. His wife encouraged O. Henry to write, so he published works in "Detroit free press and true“ in the year of marriage. In July 25, 1897, his wife Athol Porter died of tuberculosis.

The Characteristics of O.Henry’s Writing
His stories are usually short. The plots are exceedingly clever and interesting, humor abounds, and the end is always surprising. Often there are two endings: first an unexpected ending, then another, which is quite a different one and a still better surprise.
Many of his stories contain a great deal of slang and colloquial expressions, which make them hard to be understood by people outside of America. Such forms of speech are used to give what is called local color, to make the stories fit in with the characters and scenes described. O.Henry’s own speech, both spoken and written, was always chaste and clear.

His pseudonym（笔名）： It is believed that Porter found his pen name while in jail, where one of the guards was named Orrin Henry. Other sources say that the name was derived from his calling “Oh Henry!” after the family cat, Henry. Guy Davenport wrote that the name was a condensation of “Ohio Penitentiary”（俄亥俄监狱）

• In 1894 cash was found to have gone missing from the First National Bank in Austin, where Porter had worked as a bank teller.
• In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt.
Writing style
• O. Henry tended to repeat the motifs of his stories and fall into melodrama and sentimentality. He wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. Typical for O. Henry's stories is a twist of plot which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance. His short stories were masterworks of careful plotting and surprise endings.

make off with the young son of a prominent man. They find out that the child is a real nuisance. In the end they agree to pay the boy's father to take him back.

Themes
Love, generosity, wealth and poverty are central themes in The Gift of the Magi.
• The Gift of the Magi describes an extremely poor young couple id determined to give Christmas presents to each other. He sells his watch to buy a set of combs for her long hair, and she cuts off her hair and sells it to buy him a watch fob. The moral of the story is that physical possessions, however valuable thy may be, are of little value in the grand scheme of things.
Personal experience
• O. Henry was born in Greensboro, North Carolina.
• His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his parental grandmother and paternal aunt.
• In 1894 Porter started a humorous weekly The Rolling Stone. It was at this time that he began heavy drinking. When the weekly failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist.
• William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He continued to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk.
• In 1819, he died at Columbus.
