Nowadays some students in middle school date with their classmates.According to a new study from the University of Georgia, those students have much worse study skills and are four times more likely to stop schooling. They use twice as much alcohol and tobacco than their single classmates.”Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships,” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and Head of the department of Health Promotion and Behaviour.Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven—year period from 6th to 12th grades. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviours, including the use of drugs and alcohol.Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students7 academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers.Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increasedthe frequency of dating in high school.”At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and students with highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journ al article.Study skills refer to behaviours that lead to academic success such as doing homework for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters."Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications (并发症) of dating a co—worker,” Orpinas said."When the couple break up,they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex—partner (前伴侣) dating someone else.It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and distract (分散注意力) them from studying.""Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,” Orpinas concluded.1.We can learn from the passage that students who date in middle school may _____.A.be less likely to use alcohol and tobaccoB.enjoy better school livesC.be more likely to hurt othersD.have poorer academic performances2.During his study, Orpinas _____.A.found study skills have connection with their frequency of datingB.completed questionnaires about the students7 academic efforts C.completed a survey and a report each yearD.followed a group of students of 6th and 12th3.Study skills may include the following behaviors and qualities except _____.A.being kind and helpfulB.being well organizedC.being diligentD.finishing assigned schoolwork4.What can possibly happen to those who date in middle school after they break up?A.They will think it reasonable to get depressed.B.They will miss their ex—partners sometimes.C.Their attention to studying will be affected.D.They don’t want to see each other any longer.5.According to the passage,Orpinas holds a(n) _____ attitude towards dating in middle school.A.indifferent B.negative C.positive D.supportive 【参考答案】1-5、DAACB由(2011天津十二区县重点学校毕业班联考)改编I can’t remember a winter being as cold as this in Pennsylvania, but I'm sure there were colder days.Even though the daylight hours are growing longer minute by minute,it’s easy to find an excuse not to go out unless you absolutely must, but then again I often have to push myself to accomplish things。
2016高考英语二卷作文Dear Editor,I am writing to express my concern regarding the recent changes to our school's sports activities. As a student who is passionate about physical fitness and team sports, I believe that these changes have had a significant impact on our school community.Firstly, the reduction in the variety of sports offered has limited our options. Previously, we had a wide range of sports to choose from, which catered to different interests and abilities. However, the current selection is quite limited, which has led to a lack of motivation among students to participate in sports activities.Secondly, the decrease in the frequency of sports classes has affected our physical health. Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the reduction in sports classes has made it difficult for students to engage in regular exercise. Moreover, the lack of professional coaches has hindered our progress in sports. Professional coaches are crucial for providing guidance and training to improve our skills. Without them, our development in sports has beensignificantly impacted. In light of these issues, I propose the following solutions:1. Increase the variety of sports offered to cater to the diverse interests of students.2. Restore the frequency of sports classes to ensure regular physical activity.3. Hire professional coaches to provide proper guidance and training.I hope the school administration will consider these suggestions and take appropriate action to improve our sports activities.Thank you for your attention to this matter.Sincerely,[Your Name]。

I think it was my mother who taught me the meaning of honesty. Not because she actually was honest, but because she lied all the time. She felt that the easiest way out of any given situation was generally the best way out. And, for her, that generally meant telling a “little white lie.” As a young child I thought it was kind of cool. And, naturally, when I would come to her with a concern or question wondering what I should do, she generally advised me to lie.“Mom, I told Theresa that I would go over to her house, but now I would rather go to Sue’s house to play.”“Tell Theresa you’re sick,” she would advise. And generally I did. But I didn’t seem blessed with her lack of conscience. On many painful occasions Theresa would find out that I really went to Sue’s house without her. These occasions taught me that it is more painful to be caught in a lie than it is to tell the truth in the first place. I wondered how it was possible that my mother had never learned that lesson.I started thinking of all the lies that I’d heard her tell. I remembered the time she told someone that her favorite restaurant had closed, because she didn’t want to see them there anymore. Or the time she told Dad that she loved the lawn-mower he gave her for her birthday. Or when she claimed that our phone lines had been down when she was trying to explain why she hadn’t been in touch with a friend of hers for weeks. And what bothered me even more were all the times she had involved me into her lies. Like the time she told my guidance counselor that I had to miss school for exploratory surgery, when she really needed me to babysit. And it even started to bother me when someone would call for her and she would ask me to tell th em that she wasn’t there. So, I started my own personal fight against her dishonesty. When I answered the phone and it was someone my mother didn’t want to talk to, I said, “Louise, mom is here, but she doesn’t want to talk to you.” The first time I did it, she punished me, but I refused to apologize. I told her that I had decided that it was wrong to lie. And the next time it happened I did the same thing. Finally, she approached me and said, “I agree that lying is not the best thing to do, but we need to find a way to be honest without being rude.” She admitted that her methods weren’t right, and I admitted that mine were a bit too extreme.Over the past few years, the two of us have worked together to be honest—and yet kind. Honesty should mean more than not lying. It should mean speaking the truth in kindness. Though I started by trying to teach my mom the importance of honesty, I ended up gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning of the term.1. The author’s mother __________.A. thought white lies were not liesB. helped the author get out of trouble with white liesC. told the author to lie when in troubleD. taught the author the importance of being honest2. The author __________.A. was thankful to her mother’s adviceB. felt more awkward when being caught lyingC. found that telling the truth hurt more than telling a lieD. felt guilty when hurting people with her honesty3. It can be inferred that the author’s mother __________.A. met her friends in the same restaurant regularlyB. didn’t get along with the author’s teachersC. was not popular among her friendsD. wanted to have something else for her birthday4. Finally the author and her mother agreed that __________.A. kind-heartedness is more important than honestyB. appropriate methods are the key to telling a good lieC. honesty is defined as kindness as well as truthfulnessD. absolute honesty is basic to good interpersonal relationships【参考答案】1—4、CBDC阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella. The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw t he street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞篷)built into a street lamp,” he said. The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed(安装) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.66. For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?A. To predict a heavy rain.B. To check the weather forecast.C. To protect people from the rain.D. To remind people to take an umbrella.67.What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2?A. His creation was inspired by an experience.B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.68.Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?A. motor→canopy→sensorsB. sensors→motor→canopyC. motor→sensors→canopyD. canopy→motor→sensors69.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?A. Its moving speed.B. Its appearance.C. Its installation.D. Its safety.70.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. The designer will open a company to promote his product.B. The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.D. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.【要点综述】这是一篇说明文。

Parents used to rely on physical punishments to control their children's bad behavior, which has been proven to be very harmful. Therefore, most parents now choose to simply yell, thinking that languageprobably won't hurt as much. But is that really so?Using harsh words such as "lazy" or "stupid" is just as harmful as hitting, according to a new study carried out at the University of Pittsburgh, US."It cannot reduce or correct their problem behavior," said Professor Ming - Te Wang, leader of the study, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal."On the contrary, it makes it worse."In the study, which involved 976 two - parent families, researchers asked the kids about their behavior problems, while asking their parents how often they had yelled at them.Nearly half of the parents admitted that they'd shouted at their children in the past year.Researchers noted that the kids whose parents used more harsh words experienced more behavior problems after-wards, including fighting, stealing, lying as well as symptoms of depression."Adolescence is a very sensitive period when kids arc trying Lo develop their self -identities (个性).When you yell, it makes them feel they are not capable, and that they are worthless and useless," Wang said."This may explain why so many parents say that no matter how loud they shout, their teenagers don' t listen. While harsh yelling can stop bad behavior in the moment, it doesn' t teach children tobe-have how parents want them to, according to Professor Alan Kazdin of Yale University, US.What parents need is to praise their children for good behavior. If parents really need to punish their kids, they should try things like taking away smartphones and reminding them that good behavior will get them back. After all, "we want to teach kids, not hurt them," said Kazdin.1.How do most parents react to their children's misbehaving now?A.Letting them alone.B.Beating them.C.Shouting at them.D.Praising them.2.The study finds that using harsh words .A.can make things even worse B.inspires children to do betterC.corrects children's bad behavior D.has a better effect than hitting 3.According to Professor Ming - Te Wang, .A.physical punishments are sometimes necessaryB.children are more self - centered in adolescenceC.parents should never punish kids for misbehavingD.harsh yelling damages children's self - confidence4.In Professor Alan Kazdin's opinion, parents shouldA.set good examples for their childrenB.take away their children' s smartphonesC.praise their children for good behaviorD.always think in their children's shoes5.What does the underlined word "them" in the last paragraph refer to?A.children B.bad behaviors C.parents D.smartphones【参考答案】1—5、CADCDAA man, who sometimes takes my bus, is in rags. Some evidence suggests that the process was a gradual one in which the Colorado River (which runs through the canyon) slowly cut deeper and deeper into the ground over millions of years. But volcanic rock samples taken from the canyon now suggest that the canyon was down-cut instead. Down-cutting is when a flood of water rushes over a landscape (地形) with enough force to cut deeply into the ground and leaves behind a canyon. Such a flood is usually released when a natural or man-made dam (堤坝) bursts.Robert Webb, a research geologist, says natural dams seem to have formed and broken across the Colorado River several times during the last million years. The dams were built when lava(熔岩) from the eruptions of nearby volcanoes flowed into the river. The lava hardened into hard rocks and blocked the river, causing it to back up and form a lake. Each time the lake grew so huge that itbroke the rock dam, releasing a flash flood that furthered the down-cutting process and deepened the canyon.Down-cutting is not just an earthly event. Satellite photos sent back from Mars suggest that the process has happened there, too, say many other researchers. The photos, taken by the Mars Global Surveyor, indicate that an enormous lake existed on Mars 3.5 billion years ago. The lake spilled into a large nearby hole. One edge of the hole broke, releasing a flash flood that quickly carved out a grand canyon. The existence of down-cutting on Mars is just one more piece of evidence that the cold, dry planet was once warm and wet.24. In the past, deep canyons were believed to have formed _______.A. as a result of a sudden break of volcanoesB. due to river flows over millions of yearsC. owing to the burst of artificial damsD. thanks to our ancestors’ creative work25. High-quality customer service is preached(宣扬) by many, but actually keeping customers happy is easier said than done.Shoppers seldom complain to the manager or owner of retail store, but instead will alert their friends, relatives, co-workers, strangers and anyone who will listen.Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide to frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde group and Wharton school.“Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers.” Said Paula Courtney, president of the Verde group. “The store loses the customer, but the shopper must also find a replacement.”On average, every unhappy customer will complain to at least four other, and will no longer visit the specific store for every dissatisfied customer, a store will lose up to three more due to negative reviews. The resulting “snowball effect” can be disastrous to retailers.According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing encountered the most problems. Ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers. The most common complaints include filled parking lots, cluttered(塞满了的) shelves, overloaded racks, out-of-stock items, long check-out lines, and rude salespeople.During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved the parking problems by getting moonlighting local police to work as parking attendants. Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty peaking spaces. This guidance got rid of the need for customers to circle the parking lot endlessly, and avoided confrontation between those eyeing the same parking space.Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts, pre-stocking sales items, hiring speedy and experienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions. Most importantly, salespeople should be diplomatic and polite with angry customers.“Retailers who’re responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over issues than those who aren’t so friendly.” Said professor Stephen Hoch. “Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help.”Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by filing complaints to the retailer, instead of complaining to the rest of the world. Retailers are hard-pressed to improve when theyhave no idea what is wrong.8. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints?A. Few customers believe the service will be improved.B. Customers would rather relate their unhappy experiences to people around them.C. Customers have no easy access to store managers.D. 【参考范文】基础写作 (One possible version)Li Bai, a romantic poet living in the prosperous period of China’s Tang Dynasty, is regarded as the “God of poetry” in China. All his life, though he went through a lot of setbacks, he showed his deep love for nature and eager wish for freedom andwrote about one thousand poems, of which more than thirty have been widely read and recited from generation to generation till today. Compared with Li Bai, Percy Bysshe Shelley, a romantic democratic poet lived during the period of Great Britain’s Industrial Revolution. He was born over 1,000 years later than Li Bai and unfortunately died at an early age, but he also wrote many famous poems showing his dissatisfaction with the social inequality. And Shelley, considered as the “poet of poets”, became the first poet who sang for the working class in Europe.【深圳市2014高考英语综合能力测试题(3)】读写任务(共l小题,满分25分)阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Helping others can really make a difference to your own life. You're always busy living your own life, but every now and then, take a break for a bit and help someone out. You will not regret doing this. Here are a few easy ideas how you can help others:Spend some time with one of your elderly relatives or neighbors. Help them clean up around the house or take them to a grocery store. Just sit with them and have a little chat, because sometimes the smallest acts mean the most.Teach a friend or a relative how to use a computer or get on the Internet: how to start a blog, how to upload photos to a drugstore's website so they can be printed out, how to use an iPod and add music to iTunes. It's probably stuff you write about on your own blog anyway, so talk about it instead of writing about it, which will help you learn how to explain things verbally.Donate clothes that you no longer wear or other things that you're no longer using. Someone out there will benefit from the stuff you don't need any more.【写作内容】1.以约30个词概括上文的主要内容。

These little acts will improve their lives, as well as ours. For society as a whole, it is worth spending time doing charity work. And I think that what matters most is not how much we offer to people in need, but whether we are willing to give them a hand.Sometimes, a little help can make a big difference. I once helped an old woman fix her mosquito net. She said to me gently, “Thank you, little girl.” It didn’t seem like a big thing, but I was shocked when I was told that the old woman never spoke a word after her only son committed suicide twenty years ago.As an old Chinese saying goes, “The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose.” Happiness lies in giving help to others.【深圳市2014高考英语综合能力测试题(8)】读写任务(共1小题;满分25分)阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
