Workshop 4B:

Create Geometry for CFD Analysis

Introduction to ANSYS SpaceClaim

Overview

Preface

?This workshop assumes little or no prior experience of SpaceClaim. Basic principles will be demonstrated

through the creation of a simple pipe intersection. Completion of this workshop involves: ?Launching Workbench

?Starting SpaceClaim

?Creating sketches

?Creating 3D geometry

?Saving the project

Planning

?Before starting its a good idea to think about how the geometry can be defined in terms of sketches and

modeling operations.

Sketches are 2D entities. 3D Geometry is created by applying modeling operations to the sketches.

?This basic geometry can be defined by two simple circular sketches centered about the global origin. ?The larger of the two circles can then be extruded vertically and the smaller circle extruded horizontally.

Project Start-Up

Start Workbench and Spaceclaim

A.Start → All Programs → ANSYS 16.0 → Workbench

16.0

B.Expand Component Systems and drag and drop a

Geometry component system into the Project

Schematic.

C.Right-click on the Geometry cell (A2) and click on

New SpaceClaim Geometry… to launch SpaceClaim

?SpaceClaim may take up to a minute to launch depending on the machine configuration. The info bar on the bottom left corner of the

Workbench window will display the message indicating that

SpaceClaim is launching. B C

Set Units

Set Units as Inches

A.Go to File SpaceClaim Options

B.Go to Units tab, then make sure ‘Units setting

for:’ is set to ‘This Document’. Then for Type

select Imperial from the drop-down box. This

will set the Length unit to Inches. A B

Create the first sketch on the XY Plane

A.Note the currently active plane on which the grid is

visible. By default it is XZ plane.

(This default plane can be changed in Spaceclaim Options > Advanced > Top View Direction)

B.To select the XY plane, click on the Select New Sketch

Plane button at the bottom of the graphics panel and

move your mouse between positive X and Y axes, and

click once.

C.Now the grid is displayed on the XY Plane. B C

Create the first sketch on the XY Plane continued…

A.Now click on Plan View to orient the XY plane to be normal

to the screen

B.Click on Circle tool, or use the keyboard shortcut ‘C’ to

start drawing a circle.

?Note that when you hover the mouse over a tool, a information box appears

that shows the name of the tool, followed by the Shortcut for the tool in

brackets, and a short description. You can press F1 at this stage to directly

jump to the Help section for that tool.

?Also note that the Sketch Mode is currently active. The mode below it is the

Section Mode, and the mode below that is the 3D mode.

B

1st Sketch Creation

Create the first sketch on the XY Plane continued…

A.Move the mouse to the origin of the plane (a plus sign will

track the cursor, and a green dot will appear at the origin to

indicate proximity). Click on the origin and drag the mouse

outward from the origin. A circle is drawn that changes size

as per the mouse movement.

B.Press Spacebar key on the keyboard so you can enter a

dimension for the Diameter. Enter a value of 4. The units are

automatically appended.

Note that if a sketch requires multiple dimensions, such as a rectangle, then you can press Spacebar and enter the first dimension, then press Tab to go to

the next dimension and so on. A B

2nd Sketch Creation

Create the second sketch on the XZ Plane

https://www.doczj.com/doc/fe12033656.html,e the middle-mouse button to rotate the view to

get a sense of the circle in the 3D space.

B.Its clear that the second circle that forms the cross-

section of the larger pipe should be drawn in the XZ

plane. Select the XZ Plane using the Select New

Sketch Plane tool as before and moving the mouse

to X axis and clicking once.

C.Now the grid is displayed on the XZ Plane. A

B C

2nd Sketch Creation

Create the second sketch on the XZ Plane continued…

A.Now click on Plan View to orient the XZ plane to

be normal to the screen

B.Click on Circle tool, or use the keyboard shortcut

‘C’ to start drawing a circle.

C.Move the mouse to the origin of the plane. Click

on the origin and drag the mouse outward from

the origin to draw the circle. Press Spacebar key

on the keyboard so you can enter a dimension

for the Diameter. Enter a value of 6. A B C

Create 1st Pipe

Create the first pipe using the first sketch

A.Switch to 3D Mode. Note that the sketches are

automatically converted to surfaces. The

structure tree on the left panel also shows two

surfaces.

B.Click on the Pull tool. Click on the circular surface

on the XY plane to select it. Click and Drag the

mouse cursor in the positive Z-direction to start

extruding. The depth of the extrude changes with

the mouse movement.

C.Press Spacebar key on the keyboard so you can

enter a dimension for the depth. Enter a value of

14.75. A B C

Create 2nd Pipe

Create the second pipe using the second sketch

A.Click on the circular surface on the XZ plane to select it.

Click on Pull Both Sides option that appears in the mini-

toolbar next to it.

B.Click and Drag the mouse cursor in the positive Y-

direction to start extruding. The depth of the extrude

changes in both direction symmetrically with the mouse

movement. Press Spacebar key on the keyboard to

specify the dimension. Pay attention to the extent of the

dimension line. If the dimension displayed is between

the two ends of the pipe then enter a value of 28, but if

the dimension displayed is from the center of the pipe

to one end then enter a value of 14. A B

A Review and Save the Project

The geometry is now complete

A.Review the completed model in Spaceclaim. Note that there

is a single solid body in the Structure tree.

B.Switch to the Workbench window. Save the project file by

going to the menu File Save and assign a name.
