Eat like a king in the morning, a prince at noon, and a peasant at night. This saying is all about the importance of breakfast. And now scientists can tell us just why it’s so important. According to a study carried out at Imperial College London, UK, skipping the first meal of the day not only means you eat more at lunch, but also that your brain wants to find more unhealthy foods.
The study suggests that there is a special part of our brain called the orbitofrontal cortex (眶额皮层), which plays an important part in making choices about what we eat. It is used for identifying the taste of food, especially when skipping breakfast. It is more likely to target high-calorie foods when you’re on an empty stomach.
Scientists did an experiment on this. Dr Tony Goldstone from Imperial College London, scanned (扫描) the brains of 21 men and women, around the age of 25. On the first day, these people skipped breakfast before the scans. On the second day, they had cereal (谷物), bread and jam as breakfast. After the scan on both days, they had their lunch.
When the volunteers had skipped breakfast, they ate around 20 percent more at lunch, compared with days when they had eaten breakfast. Their brain scans also showed the orbitofrontal cortex was especially responsive to high-calorie foods. ―We believe that bit identifies the value of foods –how pleasant, how delicious something is,‖ Goldstone told The Guardian.

Our culture teaches us that being busy equals happiness. We are socialized to believe that filling our days keeps us satisfied. However，being busy has negative results. Being busy allows us to escape our lives and set aside our problems. We never have the opportunity to confront our fears or examine the desires of our hearts. We never learn the joy and peace of free time to just be alive. Since I have accepted a second job coaching basketball for the winter mont hs，I realized the need to re-prioritize（重新设定重心）again. I am looking at what I can remove from my life during these months so I still have time to relax and still.
If you can’t find time for yourself and be with those you love, then it’s time for you to re-prioritize again. Figure out what really is important and delete（删除）the rest. Then you will have time to enjoy life，your family, and friends.
I am pretty fortunate to have a job where I make my own schedule. This means for the most part，I set the days and times I go into church for work. By setting my own schedule，I can work during my high productivity times. The times I traditionally am not quite with it (mornings) I can spend being still.
If you don’t make you r own schedule, think about approaching your boss to change it. Maybe you can come in an hour earlier or later, you will never know unless you ask. If it’s impossible, take full advantage of your days off to balance your time.
Finally, the most important way I break free from being busy is devoting time each day for me.
This means every day I have an hour to spend just being alone. I turn off technology and escape with prayer（祈祷）and meditation （冥想）.
Some days, I will go for a walk or bike ride. These times give me the opportunity to search my heart and face up to feelings I may have. This time reminds me of what is more important to life than filling our days with meaningless activities. Life is about experiencing the people and world around you. W: Well we were eating dinner and enjoying ourselves, and I forgot about the rice cakes on the stove. When I went to the kitchen, they were burnt. I was so upset. Then I ran out to a store and bought some.
M: Did anyone notice?
W: No. And when I served them, my sister said, ―These rice cakes are amazing! Emily made them herself.‖ So anyway, I just smiled and didn’t say anything
M: That’s funny!

M: And today we have a familiar face on television, Angela Bond, the news reporter. Welcome, Angela. Your job has taken you all over the world, hasn’t it？
W: Yes. I’ve reported from a number of countries in Asia and I’ve just returned from the US, then next week I will go to London.
M: Is the traveling what you enjoy about the job?
W: It’s certainly interesting, but it can be annoying never knowing where I’m going to the next week! For me, the really exciting thing is being somewhere when a big news story is taking place and seeing it develop.
M: Well, do you have much time for a social life?
W: It is better now I’m in Sydney and can see my boyfriend more often. My sister introduced us. We have a lot in common. He is a lawyer and I studied law at university. Also we found that we lived in Hong Kong at the same time, although we never met.
M: What do you like to do in your free time?
M: Well, cooking is something new I’m trying. And one of the best things I’ve bought recently was a boat and when I want to feel calm and peaceful I go for a sail on the river.

W: What do I usually eat and drink? Well, I get up about 7:30, have a shower and then have breakfast about 8：00. I make a cup of tea, have orange juice and then toast. Then I go to my office- I work in advertising. I don’t eat snacks, so I’m quite hungry by lunchtime. I have lunch at 1:15. I have about an hour for lunch, and often go to a cafénear my office. I have salad and sometimes have a cake- the cafédoes wonderful chocolate cakes. And to drink? Well, water. I don’t like to have too much tea of coffe e in the day.
I have my evening meal at about 6:30 and I like cooking so I try to make something healthy and interesting-usually chicken or fish with rice. I never have a dessert, but I do have a cup of coffee after dinner. Then I often go out- maybe to the cinema or with friends.
