A

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometime s to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,” and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that.”

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighbourhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons(盒)(in many countries, eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons). Then he related an incident and I began to remember unclearly the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at that time. I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were put there about four feet high. I must have stopped in front of the poles of egg cartons. Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the eggs back together, so I went to work.

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the one who just did it. He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, it is plain that the manager did not.

56. According to the passage, many people will have a good opinion of those who ________.

f. the manager didn’t believe my explanation

g. I picked up the unbroken eggs.

A. b, d, g, c, a, f, e

A few years ago a very controversial(引起争议的)game hit the shelves at local game stores worldwide. I became addicted, playing the game day in and day out. In the game my rivals(对手)wore all purple, so they were easy to pick out while driving up and down the streets in my car. I became crazy with taking over their territory(领地). In order to do that, I had to knock them dead. It was fun.

However, one sweet day my boyfriend and I were driving around our town and I saw a person wearing purple. In my mind I was brought back to my game, and jokingly I said to my boyfriend, “A rival! Shoot him up!”

Now of course this was all joking, but the reality was, the man wearing purple made me think of violence, harm, and destruction. Now thankfully I have a pretty good grasp on reality and virtual(虚拟的)reality. For some though, when video games begin to take over and merge(融合)in with their reality, it can be a deadly game.

There’s a story about a young girl who died after playing the game for several days straight. She became so addicted to gaming that she didn’t e at or sleep, which in turn caused death. A similar story involves an older man from South Korea who actually gave up his job to play his video game of choice. He played his game in an Internet cage for three days straight where he finally died.

The stories go on. A quick google search and you’ll find some sad stories involving men and women losing jobs, their family and money over their gaming addiction. It’s a shame that some people don’t know when to cut virtual reality out of their lives. If you’ re losing things in REAL life, it’s time to say GAME OVER.

60. According to the passage, we can learn that the author ________.

A. is violent in reality

B. lost her family due to video games

C. was once addicted to video games

D. plays video games now and then

61. When the author said “A rival! Shoot him up!”, she ________.

A. was just joking

B. was very serious

C. wanted to knock him dead

D. mixed reality with virtual reality

62. To support her idea, the author develops the passage mainly by ________.

A. listing reasons

B. giving examples

C. making comparisons

D. using mottos

63. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To introduce a new video game.

B. To share her experiences with readers.

C. To list the disadvantages of video games.

D. To call on people to stay away from video games.

C

With its impatient motorists, crowded Tube trains, barging(跌跌撞撞)walkers and the stress of the financial storm--London is perhaps ready for a break from the frenzy. The Go Slow movement is coming to the capital.

This month a ten-day festival, Slow Down London, will offer people a rare opportunity: the chance to relax. From having a walk across the Thames to workshops on timekeeping, the campaign aimed to show people how to “live life in real time”.

Tessa Watt, who organized the event with two friends who wanted a more balanced life, told The Times, “There is a sense in a city like London that we do tend to run around like mad rabbits in a hutch(兔箱). We get angry with someone walking slowly on the pavement(人行道). The festival would offer a range of events aimed at inspiring

people to improve their lives by slowing down to do things well, rather than as fast as possible”.

A walk across Waterloo Bridge, which would take most people a few minutes, will take participants in an organized walk up to an hour. A workshop will seek to restore the lost art of writing letters, while another will offer suggestions for better organization of the working day. During the event organizers will occasionally hand out “speeding tickets” to walkers who they think are walking too quickly.

Ms Watt said, “People connect slowing down with having to go outside the city, and they think you can only have

a feeling of calm in rural life. We’re out to show that you can achieve that in the city.”

64. The underlined phrase “the frenzy” in the first paragraph probably means a state in which ________.

A. people are living peacefully

B. people are excited and crazy

C. the government has less control

D. the society is stable

65. The festival is intended to ________.

A. offer people the chance to relax

B. help people survive the financial crisis

C. help the impatient motorists

D. warn the slow walkers

66. From the third paragraph, we learn that ________.

A. Tessa Watt organized the event on her own

B. Londoners like the way the rabbits behave

C. the festival aims to improve people’s lives

D. people will get angry with those on the pavement

67. In the following statements, ________ is an activity of the Go Slow movement.

A. producing food by traditional methods

B. walking under Waterloo Bridge

C. writing e-mails

D. walking to work

Foreign language study starts at a very young age for many students in America. A recent report by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages says some students start language training at the age of six. States do not require foreign language training this early in education. But many students choose to study languages in elementary school. The most popular language for young students is Spanish, French and German.

Almost seven-million students in public secondary schools in the United States are studying a foreign language. This is about thirty-four percent of students at the junior and high school level. These students are from twelve to seventeen years old. Nearly seventy percent of students studying a foreign language at this level choose Spanish. French, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian are also popular. There is also a growing interest in the Arabic

language in the United States.

Each state sets its own requirements for foreign language study at the junior high and high school level. Many students graduate from high school with at least two years of foreign language study. Some study a foreign language for four years.

There are different foreign language requirements at colleges and universities. Some universities require students to have had several years of language education in high school. In addition, many colleges and universities require students to complete at least two years of foreign language study before graduating.

Two years ago, the United States government passed law to help states increase foreign language study for all public school students. State and local education agencies can request money to help start, improve or expand foreign language study. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language says interest in the program is huge. The council says this proves that young Americans are ready and willing to learn foreign languages.

68. How many students choose to study Spanish in public secondary schools in the United States?

A. About 7 million.

B. About 14 million.

C. More than 20.5 million.

Brain implant lets man with paralysis move and feel with his hand. A brain implant has restored movement and a sense of touch in the hand of a man with a severe spinal cord injury.Patrick Ganzer at Battelle Memorial Institute in the US and his colleagues have developed a brain-computer interface(BCI)that(21)______(allow)28-year-old Ian Burkhart to grasp and feel objects again. Burkhart has a severe upper spinal cord injury and has complete paralysis in his hands and legs,(22)______ can move his elbows and shoulders. He had a brain implant inserted in2014as part of research aiming to restore movement in(23)______right arm. The BCI uses the implant(24)______(record)brain activity that is sent to a processor that decodes these signals into movements, which in turn feed in to bands around the forearm which electrically activate his hand muscles. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last six years:he can play[the video game]Guitar Hero, swipe a credit card and do about20different hand grips,”says Ganzer. But because Burkhart had no sensation in his hands,he previously had no sense of touch or pressure when(25) ______(grasp)objects,and if blindfolded, was not able to detect small objects such as a pencil. The researchers discovered that(26)______Burkhart’s hand cannot feel anything, the brain implant stills registers a faint sensory signal when he touches an object. They boosted this signal by incorporating a band around the bicep which vibrates when Burkhart’s hand receives sensory information. As a result,Burkhart is able to detect objects by touch alone. The BCI is also able to detect different levels of touch and adjust the strength of Burkhart’s hand movements depending on the object–a light grasp, for example, for a paper cup. The researchers believe it is the first BCI(27)______can simultaneously restore movement and touch. When the brain implant was inserted,it(28)______(intend)solely for controlling movement, but the(29)______(add) touch is possible because there is some overlap(30)______the sensory and motor areas in Burkhart’s brain, says Ganzer.
