This standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 121 ‘Welding’ (Secretariat: Germany).
The responsible German body involved in its preparation was the Normenausschuss Schwei?technik (Welding Standards Committee), Technical Committee Abnahmefestlegungen für das Personal für Schwei?en und verwandte Verfahren .
General
The aim of this standard is to ensure that the qualification testing of welders is performed under the same conditions and using the same types of test piece, irrespective of where such tests are held. By passing the test as specified here, a welder demonstrates that he is adequately qualified to be employed for the fusion welding of steel in industry within the scope specified in this standard.
The standard thus provides a basis for mutual recognition of welder qualification test certificates by the bodies responsible for the various fields of application.
Examiners and examining bodies
This standard does not provide information on examiners and examining bodies involved in the qualification testing of welders since these are indicated in the relevant legal regulations, specialized standards, codes of practice, or technical delivery conditions.
Currently, the following persons and bodies are recognized as being competent for the qualification testing of welders:
a)welding training and testing institutes;b)welding training institutes;
c)examination and certification boards of the Deutscher Verband für Schwei?en und verwandte Verfahren e.V. (German Welding Society);d)technical inspection associations (TüV );e)Germanischer Lloyd ;f)Lloyd’s Register EMEA ;

g)testing and inspection bodies accredited by federal or Land authorities;
h)welding engineers, accredited on the basis of legal regulations, codes of practice or standards;
i)examiners or examining bodies, accredited on the basis of European codes of practice, legal regulations or standards, or in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17024.
Test certificates
This standard does not invalidate existing qualification test certificates issued on the basis of the 1997 edition of DIN EN 287-1. On the expiry of these certificates new certificates have to be issued, which may involve the welding of further test pieces by the welder concerned (since the scope of the new certificates differs somewhat from those issued hitherto on the basis of DIN EN 287-1).
Job knowledge test
Welders who apply for approval in Germany are required to take the job knowledge test detailed in Annex C.Welders who are employed in Germany and have not passed such a test will be at least required to demonstrate that they have some knowledge in occupational safety and accident prevention.
DIN V 1738 and DIN ISO 857-1 are the standards corresponding to CEN Report ISO 15608 and International Standard ISO 857-1, respectively, referred to in clause 2 of the EN.
