WASHINGTON---The head of the World Bank says for the first time in human history, it is possible to end poverty around the world. Jim Yong Kim told a Washington audience Tuesday, he wants to make ending world poverty by 2030 a top goal for the bank and governments around the world.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim says that the problems of poverty, hunger and inequality are wide, urgent and a matter of survival of millions.

“We know that despite the great successes of the last decade, there are still about 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty, 870 million who go hungry every day, and 6.9 million children under five dying every year,” he said.

But Kim told a Washington audience that the previous successful efforts to cut the number of people living in extreme poverty by half give them hope.

“We are at an auspicious moment in history, when the successes of past decades and an increasingly favourable economic outlook(前景) combine to give developing countries a chance-for the first time ever-to end extreme poverty within a generation,” he said in a speech at Georgetown University. “Our duty now must be to ensure that these favourable circumstances are matched with deliberate decisions to r ealize this historic opportunity.”

Kim says success will require increasing the speed of economic growth, particularly in South Africa and South Asia.

But he warned that civil unrest(动乱) could happen if economic growth does not help people at all income levels, and also include women and youths.

Kim says that the World Bank and other development agencies will have more resources to get this job done right. “Meeting this 2030 goal will take extraordinary effort,” he said.

However, Kim warned that all the progress in fighting poverty could be destroyed by climate disasters unless the nations of the world do more to prevent climate change.

It doesn’t kill germs(细菌) better than cooler water, but turning tap temperatures high, the US burns carbon equal to the emissions of Barbados.

People typically wash their hands seven times a day in the United States, but they do it at a far higher temperature than is necessary to kill germs, a new study says. The energy waste is equivalent(等量) to the fuel use of a small country.

It’s cold and flu season, when many people are concerned about avoiding germs. But forget what you think you know about hand washing, say researchers at Vanderbilt University. Chances are good that how you clean up is not helping you stay healthy; it is helping to make the planet sick.

Amanda R. Carrico, a research assistant professor at the Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and Environment in Tennessee, told National Geographic that hand washing is often “a case where people act in ways that they think are in their best interest, but they in fact have inaccurate beliefs or outdated perceptions.”

Carrico said, “It’s certainly true that heat kills bacteria, but if you were going to use hot water to kill them it would have to be way too hot for you to tolerate.”

She explained that boiling water, 212°F (99.98°C), is sometimes used to kill germs - for example, to clean drinking water that might be polluted with germs. But “hot” water for hand washing is generally within 104°F to 131°F (40°C to 55°C.) At the high end of that range, heat could kill some germs, but the lasting contact that would be required would burn the skin. Carrico said that after a review of the scientific literature, her team found “no evidence that using hot water that a person could stand wo uld have any benefit in killing bacteria.” Even water as cold as 40°F (4.4°C) appeared to reduce bacteria as well as hotter water, if hands were scrubbed, rinsed(冲洗) and dried properly.

In fact, she noted that hot water can often have an unfavorable effect on hygiene. “Warmer water can harm the skin and affect the protective layer on the outside, which can cause it to be less resistant to bacteria,” said Carric o.

Using hot water to wash hands is therefore unnecessary, as well as wasteful, Carrico said, particularly when it comes to the environment. According to her research, people use warm or hot water 64 percent of the time when they wash their hands. Usin g that number, Carrico’s team calculated a significant impact on the planet.

“Although the choice of water temperature during a single hand wash may appear minor(较小的,次要的), when multiplied by the nearly 800 billion hand washes performed by Americans each year, this practice results in more than 6 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions year ly,” she said.

That’s roughly equal to the emissions of two coal-fired power plants, or 1,250,000 passenger vehicles, over the course of a year. It’s higher than the greenhouse gas emissions of small countries like El Salvador or Armenia, and is about equivalent to the emissions of Barbados. If all US citizens washed their hands in cooler water, it would be like eliminating the energy-related carbon emissions of 299,700 US homes, or the total yearly emissions from the US zinc or lead industries.

The researchers found that close to 70 percent of respondents said they believe that using hot

water is more effective than warm, room temperature, or cold water, despite a lack of evidence backing that up, said Carrico. Her study noted r esearch that showed a “strong cognitive(认知的) connection” between water temperature and hygiene in both the United States and Western Europe, compared to other countries, like Japan, where hot water is related more to comfort than with health.

The researchers published their results in the July 2013 issue of International Journal of Consumer Studies. They recommended washing with water that is at a “comfortable” temperature, which they noted may be warmer in cold months and cooler in hot ones.

60. What does the writer mainly focus on when writing this passage?

A. Whether hot water helps kill germs effectively in hand washing.

B. How hot water contributes to the serious worsening of our planet.

C. Why the consumption of hot water is unnecessary and wasteful.

D. What the advantages and disadvantages of using hot water are.

61. According to the passage, all the following share roughly the same CO2 emissions yearly EXCEPT .

A. two coal-fired power plants

A. Boiling water at 212°F (99.98°C) works effectively in killing germs.

B. Warmer water can damage the protective layer of the outside skin.

C. There is much difference between cold water and hot water in reducing bacteria.

D. Americans have inaccurate beliefs or outdated perceptions in hand washing.

63. Which of the following is the standard of a comfortable water temperature for washing hands?

C

(Teaching a child to read at a young age gives him a valuable start in life. Reading is the basic part of educatio n and a child’s reading ability will influence his school success greatly. Learning difficulties, many of which begin from poor reading skills, can damage a school child’s confidence and affect his future achievement. Young children are programmed to learn and they can learn better with encouragement. Ten to twenty minutes of reading a day still leaves plenty of time for play.)

Many parents are concerned that learning to read is too challenging a task for a pre-school child, but they should also remember that most children learn to speak by the time they are 3. Learning a language is probably the single most challenging task any individual can undertake, yet children do it without formal instruction, achieving the fluency much better than adult language students.

There is a window of opportunity in terms of IQ development, which is most open during a child’s early years. A scientific study, carried out by Dr. Peter Huttenlocher at the University of Chicago, showed that the number of connectors, called synapses(神经元突触), between the nerve endings in a newborn baby’s brain is similar to the number in the average adult brain. These synapses increase rapidly during early childhood. By 12-24 months a child’s brain has about 50%

more synapses than the average adult brain. After that the synapses which are not in use begin to atrophy(衰退). For most people, from age 16, the number remains steady. It begins to drop again as we move into our golden years.Doing intellectual activities at a young age, such as learning to read, can stimulate(刺激) and preserve these connectors in the brain resulting in a long-term beneficialeffect on IQ development.

Another notable study is probably the Milwaukee project. This study took a group of babies, all of whose mothers had low IQs, and gave them special training for seven hours a day, five days a week, until they started first grade. By the age of 6 these children had an average IQ 30 points higher than their contemporaries. The overwhelming conclusion is that the early intellectual stimulation can have a positive, long-term effect on a child’s brain development.

(From birth you should talk to and explain things to your baby. Reading to him can be a wonderful way of spending quality time with your child. The enjoyment of books and being familiar with the idea of print will pave the way for(为……铺平道路) learning to read later.

If your child is a fast learner you can help him realize his potential by introducing him to the joy of the printed word at an early age. This will lay the foundations(基础) for both a high achieving school career and a lifelong love of reading. If your child shows early signs of reading difficulties, your efforts may help him get rid of such problems before he goes to school.

It can be difficult to teach your own child because emotional(引起情绪激动的) issues arise easily. Online programs for learning to read English are excellent choices. They allow children to repeat new materials as many times as they need to, without wearing out the parents’ patience.)

64. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. Children should be taught to read at an early age.

B. Children can read better than most adult students.

C. Children have more synapses than most adults.

D. Children are supposed to learn to read on the Internet.

65. How can children benefit from learning to read at a young age?

A. It can build up great confidence in their mind.

B. It can help preserve the connectors in their brains.

C. It can help produce more connectors in their brains.

D. It can help them find both their weaknesses and strengths.

66. At the end of this passage the author advises _______.

A. parents not to get angry too often

B. children to enjoy reading as early as possible

C. children not to wear out their parents’ patience

D. parents to get their children to take an online program

D

Mr. Hungerton, her father, really was absolutely centered upon his own silly self. If anything could have driven me from Gladys, it would have been the thought of such a father-in-law: I am convinced that he really believed in his heart that I came round to the Chestnuts three days a week for the pleasure of his company; and very especially to hear his views upon bimetallism(金银双币制).

For an hour or more that evening I listened to his tiring talk about bad money driving out good, and the true standards of exchange.

“Suppose,” he cried, “that all the debts in the world were called up at once, and immediate

payment insisted upon, what under our present conditions would happen then?”

I gave the self-evident answer that I should be a ruined man, upon which he jumped from his chair, blaming me for my thoughtless quickness, which made it impossible for him to discuss any reasonable subject in my presence.

At last I was alone with Gladys, and the moment of Fate had come! She sat with that proud, slim figure of hers outlined against the red curtain. How beautiful she was! Gladys was full of every womanly quality.

I was about to break the long and uneasy silence, when two critical, dark eyes looked round at me, and the proud head was shaken disapprovingly. “I have a feeling that you are going to propose(求婚), Ned. I do wish you wouldn’t; for things are so much nicer as they are.”

I drew my chair a little nearer. “Now, how did you know that I was going to propose?” I asked in wonder.

“Don’t women alw ays know? Do you suppose any woman in the world was ever taken unawares? But…o h, Ned, our friendship has been so good and so pleasant! What a pity to spoil it! Don’t you feel how splendid it is that a young man and a young woman should be able to talk face to face as we have talked?”

She had sprung from her chair, as she saw signs that I proposed to announce some of my wants. “You’ve spoiled everything, Ned,” she said. “It’s all so beautiful and natural until this kind of thing comes in! It is such a pity! Why can't you control yourself?”

“But why can’t you love me, Gladys? Is it my appearance, or what?”

“No, it isn’t that.”

“My character?”

She nodded severely.

“What can I do to mend it?”

She looked at me with a wondering distrust which was much more to my mind than her whole-hearted confidence.

“Now tell me what’s wrong with me?”

“I’m in love with somebody else,” said she.

It was my turn to jump out of my chair.

“It’s nobody in particular,” she explained, laughing at the expression of my face: “only an ideal. I’ve never met the kind of man I mean.”

“Tell me about him. What does he look like?”

“Oh, he might look very much like you.”

“How dear of you to say that! Well, what is it that he does that I don’t do? I’ll have a try at it, Gladys, if you will only give me an idea what would please you.”

“Well, it is never a man that I should love, but always the glories he had won; for they would be reflected upon me. Think of Richard Burton! When I read his wife’s life with him I could so understand her love! And Lady Stanley! Did you ever read the wonderful last chapter of that book about her husband? These are the sort of men that a woman could adore with all her soul, and yet be the greater, not the less, on account of her love, honored by all the world as the inspirer of noble deeds.”

“And if I do —”

Her dear hand rested upon my lips. “Not another word, Sir! You should have been at the office for evening duty half an hour ago; only I hadn’t the heart to remind you. Someday, perhaps,

when you have won your place in the world, we shall take it over again.

Friends in your life are like pillars on your porch. Sometimes they hold you up and sometimes they lean on you. Sometimes it's just enough to know they're standing by. Friendship doubles your joy and divides your grief. A friendship is priceless and should be cultivated (developed).

●Remembering the golden rule

Without a doubt, the greatest human relations principle is to treat other people like you want to be treated. When you show respect for your friends and gratitude for their friendship, you'll be blessed in untold ways.

You can't know what has gone on in the rude person's life that day, but you can assume that his or her day hasn't gone well. Maybe a loved one lost his job, her boss blamed her unjustly, he's coming down with the flu, or she just found out that her teenager is taking drugs.

Whatever the cause of the rudeness, you don't have to accentuate (make…more noticeable) the problem. A kind word or a gentle, understanding smile may help the person more than returned rudeness would.

● Consideringfoes as friends

A friend looks after your own good. On the other hand, a foe is someone who isn't interested in your well-being.

Yet some students view their teachers as enemies. However, a student's success in school partly depends on the teacher's effectiveness in the classroom. Instead of being an enemy, a teacher who corrects you and helps you to achieve can be the best friend you ever had.

This kind of thinking, along with a little attitude adjustment, helps you to convert (change) foes to friends, and both of you are better off.

● Making friends by being an optimist

Do you enjoy being around a pessimist, someone who is generally described as being able to brighten up a room just by leaving it? The answer is obvious. Most people prefer to be around people who believe that tomorrow is going to be better than today, rather than people who believe that today is even worse than yesterday.

● Capturing the pleasing personality

How do you develop a pleasing personality? Here are some steps you can take:

Smile when you see someone. You don't have to give a wide grin — just a pleasant, friendly smile.

Speak in a pleasant, upbeat tone of voice. Talk to people as if they are good friends, even if they don't really fall into that category yet.

Take a course in public speaking. The ability to express yourself attracts favorable attention from many sources.

Develop a sense of humor. Pick up a couple of joke books. This makes you a little more outgoing and friendly.

● Don't criticize unjustly

Instead of being eager to dish out criticism all the time, take the humane and sensible approach. Look for the good in others. Encourage them. Build them up.

Most people seldom think through each situation completely and consider the other person's point of view. If you take the time and effort to do this, you'll end up befriending more people.

Liu Deqian, researcher and deputy director of the Tourism Research Center at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that Chinese visitors often lack an awareness of being polite or behaving appropriately. “On their first or second time abroad, Chinese visitors tend to forget that they are visiting other people’s homeland and overlook the manners of their hosts,” he said.

Zhang Guanren, 28, who helped organize package tours to Australia, observed that on international flights, the first passengers to stand up and reach for luggage while the plane is still landing are often Chinese. “Our compatriots(同胞) seem to lack patience, and they’re foreve r in a rush to do things and fear lagging behind others.”

Some disregard(漠视) rules in local wildlife parks: They disturb koalas in their natural habitats by touching them, even though the local guide has warned them against doing so. “This is far from being eco-friendly,” said Zhang.

书面表达:

The passage mainly tells us that the Chinese tourists ranked the second in a global poll of worst travelers, as they behaved impolitely and improperly when travelling abroad.

Actually, we can find some impolite and improper behavior when we travel at home. For example, some travelers, drop litter anywhere at scenic spots, smoke in the wooded mountains or take photos when they are not supposed to. The behavior, on one hand, destroys the beauties of natu re and affects other tourists’ moods, and on the other hand, it will produce a very bad national image.

So it is necessary to be a civilized tourist. To do this, we should be aware of travel manners, such as speaking and behaving politely, especially in public places. In addition, we should familiarize ourselves with the local customs in advance, so as to avoid misunderstandings or troubles. Last but not least, do as the rules of scenic spots require us to do.
