Questions 91 ~ 95 are based on the following passage:

There are three common calendar systems in use by the United States higher education institution. Semester Systems are one of them.

The academic year is divided into two terms, each of which provides for about 15 weeks of instruction plus a week for final examinations. The fall semester, considered the first term of the academic year, usually begins in September or late August, and it is increasingly common for the term to start early enough to be completed before the two-week Christmas holiday. Colleges start later in September. The second or spring semester usually begins sometime in January and ends in late May or early June. Most schools schedule a one- or two-week vacation in March or April. A variation of the semester system being tried by some institutions is the “4—1—4” calendar, which has a four-month fall semester ending in December, a one-month short term in January for which students may enroll if they wish, and another four-month semester beginning early in February.

Questions 96~100 are based on the following passage:

In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same faces. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called “the weaker sex”, or, if men want to please them, “the fair sex”. But boys and girls are taugh t together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s bodies really we aker?

The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Women’s times are always slower than men’s, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teen-age girls. One of them swam 400 meters in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first “Tarzan”(泰山) in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weiss Muller. His fastest 400 meters was 4 minutes 59.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!

96. Women are called “the weaker sex” because ____.

B.people think women are weaker than men

C.sport is easier for men than for women

B.Women do not run or swim in races with men.

98. “That at least is what people say.” Means people____.

A.say other things too

B.don’t say this much

C.say this but may not think so

D.only think this

99. What problems does sport have?

A.Some women athletes are actually men.

B.Some women athletes are given hormone injections.

C.Women and men do not run or swim in the same races.

D.It is difficult to check whether women athletes are really women.

100. In this passage the author implies that ____.

A.women are weaker than men, but faster

B.women are slower than men, but stronger

C.men are not always stronger and faster than women

D.men are faster and stronger than women

Questions 101~105 are base on the following passage:

The stamp collector can learn a great deal from the colorful pieces of paper he put in his album. In addition to learning some basic things about organization and systematic arrangement, the stamp collector can receive a good course in history and geography from stamps. As a collector progresses and becomes more specialized, stamps teach him some basic facts about engraving, paper, and printing.

Stamps are excellent sources of historical information. Almost every nation celebrates its military heroes and political leaders on its postage stamps. But scientists and artists, from Einstein to Beethoven, also grace the stamps of the world. Famous battles are frequently commemorated, as well as buildings and scenes which have historical significance. Several of the world’s stamps are beautiful, full-color reproductions of the artistic masterpieces of different historical periods.

Stamps also offer instruction in geography. It doesn’t take long before a beginning collector checks the locations of the countries from which his stamps come. Nations like Liechtenstein, San Marino, Andorra, Gabon, Ghana, and Afghanistan, while unknown to many, are usually quite familiar to stamp collectors. Moreover, each country tends to use stamps to advertise its natural wonders. Such renowned attractions as Yosemite National Park, Victoria Falls, Mount Everest, and the Bay and Fundy appear on the stamps of the nation within whose borders they lie.

If he wishes to become more of a specialist, the stamp collector can learn some basic things about engraving, paper, and printing. The more advanced collector learns to distinguish between offset and letterpress printing. He learns to identify the different impressions made by metal and wooden engraved plates. He finds out how to detect watermarks in the various papers used for stamps, and how to identify the characteristics of different papers and the coatings which are applied to them. To the layman, most stamps appear pretty much the same. But armed with a magnifying glass, the more specialized collector can tell the difference between a common issue and a rare variety.

101. Which of the following statements do you think best describes the main idea of the essay?

A. A stamp collector must have a great deal of knowledge in history and geography.

B. A stamp collector should be good at organization and systematic arrangement.

C. A stamp collector can learn a lot from the stamps he collects.

D. a small box where colorful stamps are kept

103. “Basic thing about organization and systematic arrangement” refers to ___.

IV. Translation from English into Chinese (15 marks)

Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 126~130. After reading the passage carefully, you should translate the underlined parts into Chinese.

Science falls into two main categories: pure science and applied science. (126) Pure science considers how the universe works and how life has developed into the plants and animals we see on earth today. By means of pure science(such as chemistry, physics, geology, biology, or astronomy) we learn the laws of nature, the way the bodies of beasts and men are constructed, and how the minds of men function. (127) Applied science, often called engineering or technology (such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering), puts the laws of nature to practical use on building better structures and machines for the comfort and convenience of men. When a man learns some new fact by research in pure science, we say that he has made a scientific discovery. 128) When he puts an earlier discovery to some practical use, in a new and original way, we say that he has made an invention. In the two hundred years since the beginning of the great change that we call the Industrial Revolution, developments both in pure and in applied science speeded up in a way that the world had never before seen. All the sciences leaped forward, neck and neck like horses in a race. (129) At one time, one pulled ahead; then another caught up with and passed it. An invention in one field made possible some discovery in another; and that discovery, in turn, permitted another new application of science for the benefit of man. (130) For example: the invention of the microscope led to the discovery of germs; eventually, the germ theory of disease made possible the curing of many ills for which no effective treatment had ever before been know.

Are you aware that you actually possess six senses? The sixth is a muscular sense responsible for directing your muscles intelligently to the exact extent necessary for each action you perform. For example, when you reach for an object, the sensory nerves linking the muscles to the brain stop your hand at the correct spot. This automatic perception of the position of your muscles in relation to the object is your muscular sense in action.

Muscles are stringly bundles of fibers varying from one five-thousandth of an inch to about three inches. They have three unique characteristics, they can become shorter and thicker; they can stretch; and they can retract to their original positions. Under a high-powered microscope, muscle tissue is seen as long, slender cells with a grainy texture like wood.

More than half of a person’s body is composed of muscle fibers, most of which are involuntary—in other words, work without conscious direction. The voluntary muscles, those that we move consciously to perform particular actions, number more than five hundred. Women have only 60 to 70 percent as much muscle as men for their body mass. That is why an average woman can’t lift as much, throw as far, or hit as hard as an average man.

111 According to the selection, the muscular sense is responsible for ______.

A. the efficiency of our muscles

B. the normal breathing function

C. directing our muscles intelligently

D. the work of only our involuntary muscles

112 Intelligent use of the muscles means that ________.

In the United States a university professor is given a few months of freedom from his duties about every seventh year for travel or advanced study. This period of freedom from teaching is called a “study or research leave”. Its purpose is to give the professor experiences which will make him a wiser person and a better teacher when he returns to his university. Few study leaves are interesting enough to be described in national newspapers and magazines. Recently, however, there was an exception. The public learned how Dr. John R. Coleman, president of Haverford College, had spent his study leave. At the age of 51, Dr. Coleman was determined to escape from university life for a few months and to get a variety of experiences in the world of work. He especially wanted to learn about people. People who do hard physical labor were especially interesting to him. “I wanted to get away from the world of words and political matters and parties – the things a president does,” Dr. Coleman later explained to news writers. “As a college president you begin to take yourself very seriously and to think you have power you don't. You forget things about people. I wanted to relearn things I’d forgotten.” Telling no on e of his plans, Dr. Coleman started his study leave on a farm in Canada, hundreds of miles from his college. Getting up at 4:30 each morning, working thirteen hours a day in fields, he prepared himself physically for his next job, digging ditches in Atlanta, GeorgiA、 After that, the college president washed dishes ina Boston restaurant. During the last ten days of his leave, he worked as a garbage collector. 1. The first paragraph is mainly about _______________. Some people think those various recreational activities brought by modern technology are great and necessary because they can help people relax from hard work and study and broaden people ’horizon. Some people may not resist some temptations and indulge themselves i n those activities, such as the online games. At last they are lured away from their studies, work and interpersonal relationships. In my opinion , we should pay more attention to the advantages of various recreational activities and make the most of them to enrich our lives and broaden the scope of knowledge. When it comes to those time-consuming and less meaningful activities, I think to stay away from them is a wise decision. 2. 大学英语期末考试卷

大学英语阅读测试一(1) Part I??Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington, D.C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louver; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings. FIU has opened what it says is the first co mputer art museum in the United States. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings. Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he starts the museum because computer artists had no place to show their works. A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needs an expensive laser printer. Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr Shostak said the FIU museum would make computer art funnier for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum. 1. The main purpose of this passage is to give information about _______. A) museums throughout the world B) an electronic art museum in Miami, U.S. C) art exhibitions in Florida International University D) latest development of computer art 2. To see the art in FIU museum, you need _____. A) floppy discs B) a computer and a printer C) pictures and drawings on paper D) a computer connected to the museum by telephone line 3. _____ are stored in this museum. A) Paintings drawn by means of computer B) Different styles of paintings C) Old paintings D) Drawings done by art students of FIU 4. The museum was started when _____. A) Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists B) Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists C) art students needed a place to show their works D) computer scientists wanted to do something about art 5.
