By the end of the year, editors of New York Times have picked the 4 best books of 2019, including fiction and non-fiction. Let's see which one will take your fancy.

Disappearing Earth

By Julia Phillips

In the first chapter of this novel, two young girls vanish, sending shock waves through a town on the edge of the remote and mysterious Kamchatka Peninsula. What follows is a novel of overlapping short stories about the different women who have been affected by their disappearance. Each tale pushes the narrative forward another month and exposes the ways in which the women of Kamchatka have been destroyed — personally, culturally and emotionally — by the crime.

No Visible Bruises

By Rachel Louise Snyder

Snyder's thoroughly reported book covers what the World Health Organization has called "a global health problem". In America alone, more than half of all murdered women are killed by a current or former life partner; domestic violence cuts across lines of class, religion and race. Snyder reveals pervasive myths (restraining orders are the answer, abusers never change) and writes movingly about the lives (and deaths) of people on both sides of the equation. She doesn't give easy answers but presents a wealth of information that is its own form of hope. Midnight in Chernobyl

By Adam Higginbotham

Higginbotham's superb account of the April 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is one of those rare books about science and technology that read like a tension-filled thriller. Filled with vivid details and sharply etched personalities, this narrative of astonishing incompetence moves from mistake to mistake, miscalculation to miscalculation, as it builds to the inevitable, history-changing disaster. Exhalation

By Ted Chiang

Many of the nine deeply beautiful stories in this collection explore the material consequences of time travel. Reading them feels like sitting at dinner with a friend who explains scientific theory to you with no airs and

graces. Each thoughtful, elegantly crafted story poses a philosophical question; Chiang arranges all nine into a conversation that comes full circle, after having travelled through remarkable areas.

When you're a junior in high school, three little letters quickly become larger than life: SAT.

At the start of my junior year, I realized that the environment was more cutthroat (残酷的) than I had ever thought it could be. Surprisingly, this pressure didn't come from adults. It came from the other high school students. Everyone in my grade had college on the brain. To get into the college of our choice, we all believed, we had to outcompete, outscore and outstudy everyone else. And get less sleep. Because time sleeping was time you didn't spend studying for the SAT.

I let myself get swept up in the pressure. My new motto was, if I wasn't in every single honor level class, I wasn't doing enough. I was irritable (易怒的), I couldn't focus, I stopped talking to my friends and my mom, and I couldn't figure out who I was. I leaned back from my support networks, and I didn't have the confidence to believe that my own passions and unique skills were what would make me stand out to colleges.

That's when I realized: I am not my SAT score. Trying to conform to (遵守) what I thought colleges wanted masked who I really am. I decided

to rely on my strengths and get away from the crazy pressure I was putting on myself.

Instead of forcing myself into higher levels of math, I took on an extra history class. Instead of forcing myself to do extracurricular (课外活动) that I hated, I cut back and focused on the ones I loved. I learned how to love what I was doing and not what I thought I was supposed to do. I learned to shine as an individual, not a faceless member of the crowd. And I found that not only was this better for my happiness, but it made me more effective and efficient when I studied.

To me, individuality means having the confidence to decide who I am and who I want to be, and a number on a page is never going to change that. I am more sure of myself, and more ready to apply for college than ever.

24. At the start of the junior year, the author decided to study for the SAT

______.

A. to overcome the pressure from adults

B. to test how good she was at studying compared to other peers

C. because it was exciting to compete with other peers to get into

college

D. because she was worried she would be left behind in this

competition

25. Which of the following caused the author to realize she shouldn’t just

compete for scores?

A. She was no longer her usual self.

B. Everybody stopped talking to her.

C. She got in every single Honor’s Level class.

D. She forced herself to take a higher level of math.

26. How did the author become a more effective and efficient learner?

A. By cutting back on extracurricular.

B. By taking an extra history class.

C. By focusing on her own strengths.

D. By thinking about what colleges want.

27. Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of

the passage?

A. Pressure brings out the best in you.

B. To stand out to colleges, or anywhere, try to be your best self.

C. If you don’t make things happen, then things will happen to you.

D. Life is just a series of times when you are trying to make up your

mind.

C

It's apparently become a trend in schools around the world to ban students from using the term, "best friends", according to psychologist Dr. Barbara Greenberg. The movement, which is believed to have started in Prince George's school in South London, isn't intended to discourage close friendships, but rather encourage a wider friend group, Greenberg says.

"Let's face it. You can't ban somebody from having a close relationship, and you can't really ban somebody from having a best friend but what the schools are trying to do is foster the idea of kids having more than a single friend", Greenberg said.

The idea is to increase the number of interactions a student may have with different members of his or her peer group. "I see kids come in all week long who are feeling awful because they are either nobody's best friend or their best friend has moved on", Greenberg says.

Jay Jacobs, who operates Timber Lake Camp in New York, stresses the downside of not fostering multiple relationships at a young age, for exactly that reason. "I think that there are problems in just having one friend," Jacobs says. "Remember as you grow up, interests change, and children go in different directions." Jacobs adds that teachers at Timber Lake, which changes positions between Glen Cove in winter and Shandake in summer, have made it a point to promote a more inclusive environment for years.

Jacobs reminds people that, "As you grow up, interests change, and children go in different directions", so having only one friend can be risky. He holds the belief that children will be better set up for success later in life if they get used to having a wider friend group at a young age. "It's about promoting kindness, looking to children to be kind to one another and to be aware of what it looks like when you're not", Jacobs says.

28. Why do schools ban the term "best friends"?

A. To make students concentrate on their studies.

B. To encourage students to make more friends.

C. To prevent students from falling in love at a young age.

D. To discourage students from having a close relationship.

29. Why are some kids feeling awful according to Greenberg?

A. Their best friends have moved house.

B. They are banned from making best friends.

C. They are under great pressure from study.

D. Their best friends have started new friendships.

30. What does the underlined word "downside" in Paragraph 4 probably

mean?

A. Mistake.

B. Difficulty.

C. Drawback.

D. Burden.

31. What would be Jay Jacobs' attitude to Greenberg's idea?

A. Supportive.

B. Doubtful.

C. Opposed.

D.

Unconcerned.

D

There's one easy thing you can do every day to live longer and happier, according to a recent study, and it has nothing to do with diet, exercise, or cutting out bad habits.

A review of nearly 150 studies with more than 300,000 participants found that having active social circles decreases your chances of dying by 50 percent, regardless of age, gender or medical history. "When we're social, we live longer." Dr. Kelli Harding noted, "Loneliness is more of a risk factor to health than other known risk factors, like high blood

pressure and obesity."

The findings are written up in Dr. Harding's new book, The Rabbit Effect, which is about how kindness, rather than laughter, may be the best medicine. The book gets its title from a famous 1978 study of the relationship between cholesterol(胆固醇) and heart health in rabbits. Researchers accidentally discovered that those rabbits that received the most affection from their human handlers lived much longer than the others.

We live in a world where most of our social interactions happen through our phones. But to get the health benefits of a more active social circle, you don't have to throw away your device and join a book club. More casual interactions with neighbors, shop owners, and others you meet every day can do the trick. Increasingly, those relationships can start online. That's where Nextdoor comes in. The stated purpose of the company is "to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighborhood they can depend on".

When asked for advice on one thing you can do to live longer and happier, Dr. Harding said it perfectly, "Be kind. It's actually pretty amazing how much each person can make the world a better, kinder, healthier place. It really takes very little and you never know the impact you have on somebody."

32. What do we know about The Rabbit Effect?

A. Its title comes from a study.

B. It's a report about heart health.

C. Laughter could cure diseases.

D. Rabbits could help live longer.

33. What's the purpose of Nextdoor?

A. To advocate online shopping to save time.

B. To offer the neighborhood sports facilities.

C. To settle the arguments among the families.

D. To create a harmonious community to rely on.

34. What does the underlined phrase "do the trick" in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Improve health and wellness.

B. Set up online relationships.

C. Build a happy and warm family.

D. Keep away from bad habits.

35. What can be inferred from Dr. Harding's words in the last paragraph?

A. We can look for a kind neighborhood.

B. We should be kind to animals in the wild.

C. Every small act of kindness can make a difference.

D. All kinds of social activities can make a better world.

第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2.5 分,满分12.5分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Everyone deals with discouragement at some point in their life. 36 Discouragement, disappointment, failure, and setbacks—these are all things that can help us if we maintain an empowering mindset. So next time you start to feel discouraged, here is what you should do:

1. 37

Discouragement generally occurs when our expectations don’t agree with reality. In many cases our expectations are unrealistic, and this often has to do with how long we think things will last. If we take a longer view, and relax our expectations a little, it can really help to decrease discouragement. So be patient!

2. Think of failure as education.

When we feel like we have failed at something, discouragement often follows. However, failure doesn’t really exist, except for the meaning that we give it. We can choose to think of failure as education, and therefore good, instead of thinking of failure as bad. When we view it this way we realize that failure isn’t something that is bad, or something to be avoided. It is simply feedback. 38

3. Stop comparing ourselves with others.

No doubt, if we always compare ourselves with others, we will get discouraged easily. We generally see their victories, successes, and strengths. When we do this we get discouraged and we feel sorry for

ourselves. 39 We are on a unique path. Then we need to just focus on our own path.

4. Consider who we are spending time with.

If we spend all our time with people who are constantly negative, we can be influenced to see life through a similar lens. So what can we do? We can’t simply cut loved ones out of our lives. 40 Start to surround ourselves with positive people as a balance. Over time we will start to take on their mindset and this will help with any feelings of discouragement we may have.

A. Take the long view.

B. So don’t compare.

C. It may be a while before it comes true.

D. What we should do is simply expand our social network.

E. We ease discouragement when we think this way.

F. But it is not always a bad thing.

G. Don’t let our discouragement get in the way of our development.

Brain implant lets man with paralysis move and feel with his hand. A brain implant has restored movement and a sense of touch in the hand of a man with a severe spinal cord injury.Patrick Ganzer at Battelle Memorial Institute in the US and his colleagues have developed a brain-computer interface(BCI)that(21)______(allow)28-year-old Ian Burkhart to grasp and feel objects again. Burkhart has a severe upper spinal cord injury and has complete paralysis in his hands and legs,(22)______ can move his elbows and shoulders. He had a brain implant inserted in2014as part of research aiming to restore movement in(23)______right arm. The BCI uses the implant(24)______(record)brain activity that is sent to a processor that decodes these signals into movements, which in turn feed in to bands around the forearm which electrically activate his hand muscles. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last six years:he can play[the video game]Guitar Hero, swipe a credit card and do about20different hand grips,”says Ganzer. But because Burkhart had no sensation in his hands,he previously had no sense of touch or pressure when(25) ______(grasp)objects,and if blindfolded, was not able to detect small objects such as a pencil. The researchers discovered that(26)______Burkhart’s hand cannot feel anything, the brain implant stills registers a faint sensory signal when he touches an object. They boosted this signal by incorporating a band around the bicep which vibrates when Burkhart’s hand receives sensory information. As a result,Burkhart is able to detect objects by touch alone. The BCI is also able to detect different levels of touch and adjust the strength of Burkhart’s hand movements depending on the object–a light grasp, for example, for a paper cup. The researchers believe it is the first BCI(27)______can simultaneously restore movement and touch. When the brain implant was inserted,it(28)______(intend)solely for controlling movement, but the(29)______(add) touch is possible because there is some overlap(30)______the sensory and motor areas in Burkhart’s brain, says Ganzer.
