"Shoeless" children are more likely to get to school earlier, leave later and read more, according to a new research by Bournemouth University.
According to The Telegraph, researchers have observed tens of thousands of children who leave their shoes outside the classroom and found that pupils are more engaged in their lessons, which in turn leads to better academic performance. The research is in line with policies introduced in schools in England where children who go to class shoeless -following the steps of schools in Scandinavia in an effort to improve their academic standards and behavior.
The study is based on observing and studying tens of thousands of children in over 100 schools in around 25 countries over the last ten years. For decades children in northern Europe have learned with their shoes off because they are left at the school door arrival due to snow, ice or mud.
And now academics are calling on teachers in England to apply similar "shoeless" policies to give children the best possible chance of performing in their exams. Experts believe having children with no shoes in the classroom improves their learning because it makes them "feel at home" and more relaxed when learning.
Professor Stephen Heppell, who leads the research at Bournemouth University, said: "Children are much more willing to sit on the floor and relax if they have no shoes on. The last place a child would sit to read is an upright chair and we've found that 95 percent of them
actually don't read on a chair at home. When they go on holidays they read lying down. Having conditions in the classroom that are like those at home means that more boys are reading in the classroom. Children also arrive earlier and leave later, which translates into half an hour of extra learning a day on average.”

A few weeks ago, Yuan Chaojun quit his well-paid job with a trading company in Shanghai and started teaching people how to "escape from rooms".
Room escape is a real-life adventure game, during which "imprisoned" players are required to escape from "dungeons", "prisons" and mysterious cells by solving puzzles and connecting clues in a fixed period of time. Stress relief is one of the major reasons why these games are so popular. Mixed with excitement, challenges and fear of the unknown, the game allows people to play different roles and experience another life for a short time.
Room escape has become popular in China, attracting people from all walks of life. The games often require group thinking, making it a good alternative for company team-building activities.
Ye Kai works for a film production company. He and colleagues recently took on a room escape game called "Assassin", and only made it out "with the help of everyone".
"The game gave me a strong sense of involvement and teamwork," Ye said. "I will definitely come back and try other themes."
In Shanghai alone, more than 200 locations offer these adventures. Across the country thousands of such escape rooms with various themes have sprung up.
But escape games are not without their critics. According to a report, a venue(场馆) opened in a basement in a residential area in Shanghai's Jingan district recently, attracting a large number of devotees (热爱者) to the area. As the door to the community is now constantly open, some residents have been left annoyed. "How can our safety be guaranteed if they allow these random strangers into our community freely?" one of the residents complained.
"We are thinking about employing security guards at the entrance to check on our customers," the game developer said. "We want people to have fun. It was never our intention to disturb the neighborhood."

New research shows that kids from low-income families may be falling behind their peers because an important part of their brains is underdeveloped.
Researchers from MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research compared the brains of 12-and 13-year-olds from rich families with the brains of their peers from lower-income families. They found that one particular area of the brain—the neocortex(新皮质),which plays a key role in memory and learning ability—is thinner in children from lower-income households.
This is a crucial part of the brain for young students, who are often tested based on their ability to recall large chunks of information. Children who had a thinner neocortex performed poorly on standardized tests, researchers found. More than 90% of high-income students scored above average on a statewide math and English/Language Arts standardized test, compared with less than 60% of low-income students. Differences in cortical(脑皮层) thickness could account for almost half of the income-achievement gap in this sample, researchers wrote.
“Just as you would expect, there’s a real cost not living in a supportive environment. We can see it not only in test scores, in educational attainment, but within the brains of these children,”says psychological scientist John Gabrieli, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT and one of the study’s authors.
Since a 2011 study published by Stanford University professor Sean Reardon found that the gap between standardized test scores of high-income and low-income students has grown by about 40% since the 1960s, there’s been a lot of research aimed at finding links between income and achievement, rather than race alone. The MIT study found low-income children were equally likely to have a thinner neocortex, no matter their races.
Gabrieli and his co-authors can’t say exactly why poor children’s brains develop differently because there are too many possibilities to count. Their findings do, however, underline the importance of early intervention(干预) to ensure that low-income kids get the tools they need to succeed.
