My boss’s daughter was studying in the Philippines. He asked me if my husband and I could take care of her. He thought his daughter would be able to improve her English communication skills in this way.

After days of thinking, we agreed. He then brought her here and left after 3 days.

I thought that my boss’s daughter was well-mannered, but that was wrong.

After a month of staying in the Philippines, she started to show her true colors. When my husband asked her what she wanted for breakfast, she answered him in a rude way. From then on, we experienced fights at home. There was a time when we didn’t talk to her for a week as a punishment of not being good to us. What I hated most was that she didn’t care about other people’s feelings. She ate ahead of us when we were still working and didn’t leave anything for us. So we had to separate her food from ours to avoid such a problem.

The worst thing about her was that she shouted at us. I was wondering if she did this to her parents. We told this to her parents, but unfortunately I didn’t think that solved the problem. This situation lasted for almost 8 months. Our patience was tested during that time.

We tried to teach her everything we could to make her a better person, but I guess

8 months may not to be enough. We even tried to understand her and adjust for her, but it didn’t work. I just hope that she learned something from us and from other Filipinos.

21. This passage is mainly about the writer’s experience of________ .

A. trying to please her boss

B. changing a girl’s bad behavior

C. improving her communication skills

D. dealing with a teenage girl staying in her house

22. What do the examples in paragraph 3 tell us ?

A. The daughter wasn’t behaving well.

B. The writer and her husband were careless.

C. The writer and her husband hated children.

D. The daughter tried her best to make others happy.

23. The underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refers to _______.

A. being patient with her

B. her parents punishing her

C. asking her parents about her

D. telling her parents about her behavior

24. After reading the passage, we learn that .

A. the writer had known the daughter was hard to deal with

B. the daughter learnt to behave well in the end

C. the writer didn’t enjoy the daughter’s stay

D. the daughter hated dealing with others

B

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship .This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand .Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)deeply into both families.

There is another difficult point for us to understand .Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness

to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China , we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night

to meet a friend. We may take days off from our work to act as guides to our friends .

It is opposite in America . Americans can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full ,warm and real.

For Americans ,it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready to receive

us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. So accept their hospitality(好客)at home and enjoy your visit in America!

25.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.

A. treated hospitably at his home

B. offered a ride to his home

C. warmly welcomed at the airport

D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

26. The underlined words "generous with our time" in Paragraph 2 probably mean ______.

A. strict with time

B. serious with time

C. willing to spend time

D. careful with time

27. A suitable title for this passage would probably be "______".

A. Friendships between Chinese

B. Friendships between Americans

C. Americans' hospitality

D. Americans' and Chinese's opinions of friendships

C

Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia, some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud burp after you finish eating. Burping would show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a big burp, you are told to say “Excuse me, please”.

In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show their good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat.

What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you. Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way. People need ways to show that they want to be friends.

28. In Mongolia, burping is a way of showing that __________.

A . you are impolite

B . you enjoyed the meal prepared by the host

C . your meal was not enough

D . you are friendly with your host

The Top 4 Lies Girls Hear

1. “You'll never be good at math.”

It's generally accepted that boys are good at math while girls aren't. The fact is that it isn't true—at least, it doesn't have to be. When girls reach their teens, most of them lose their interest in math. They're trying to be regarded as female(女性).They want to stay away from things that are boy things, and math is still considered a boy thing. Math class is hard, but if you gave it a chance you could be great at math, especially because you are a girl.

2. “Being skinny is good, and how you diet is your business.”

Lots of web sites tell visitors that losing interest in eating is a beautiful thing. These “skinny is better” sites are ly ing. Losing interest in eating is a disease, not a fashion statement. It can kill you.

3. “You don't deserve(应得,值得) to make as much money as a guy.”

It's said that in 2002 women who work full-time earn about 23 percent less than guys earn. Once you see real women succeeding in cool jobs, you'll truly get that you're worth just as much as—or more than any guys.

4. “Caffeine(咖啡因)will help you study better.”

Caffeinated soft drinks have long been advertised as must-haves when you have to work very hard. But if you want to do your body a big favor, you'd better give up caffeine altogether.

32. Why do girls lose their interest in math?

A.Because they don't realize the importance of math.

B.Because math class is too hard for girls.

C.Because they aren't interested in the things which are considered boy things. D.Because girls are not as clever as boys.

33. The word “skinny” means________.

A. pretty B.strong C.tall D.thin

34. Supposing in 2002 a man earns $20,000, how much will a woman who doing the same job probably get?

A.$10,000 B.$15,000 C.$20,000 D.$25,000

35.Which of the statement is NOT true?

A. Girls sometimes can do better than boys in math.

Everyone wants to be a pop star. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pop star.

36 You get to sing and dance and make voices. People are willing to pay you tons of money and, of course, many fans love you. It’s a perfect life; what could be the problems?

37 And one of the biggest problems is “crazy” fans who love their idols (偶像) too much. Andy Lau, the Hong Kang superstar, experienced that last year. A fan was so crazy about Andy that she persuaded her parents to spend all their money and travel to Hong Kang to meet him. Andy is a nice man so he met the girl and talked with her for a few minutes.

That should have been the end of the story, but it wasn’t! 38 In despair (绝望), the father jumped into the sea and said it was because Andy Lau had made him poor and had made his daughter a “crazy” fan. It’s a very sad story and it shows what can happen when ordinary people become crazy pop fans.

We like famous persons, and we enjoy listening to them. 39 And some people think that, since they love the pop star, the pop star should love then back . That’s crazy! 40 They have their own families and friends. Their job is to entertain us, not to love us. So, don’t be a “crazy” fan, be a good fan, and just appreciate the joy, the happiness and the excitement that your favorite pop star bring you.

A. Well, clearly, there are lots of problems.

B. Sometimes we think we know them as well as we know our closest friends.

C. It seems like the coolest job in the world.

D. The family had spent all their money to meet Andy and they had no money to return

home.

E. They hated the superstar.

F. Pop stars have their own personal lives.

G. In fact, there is no difficulty in becoming a pop star.
