Nearly every driver has experienced that feeling of great tiredness, where it becomes almost impossible to stay awake at the wheel. 14-year-old Katherine Wu is too young to have experienced this situation firsthand. However, she noticed how difficult it was for her dad to remain awake while driving back from their family vacations in Florida to their home in Maryland. Her mom had to talk to her dad all the way.

― So I created a tool that can be used instead of my mum talking to my dad to make sure he stays awake and is safe,‖ she

says.

Her invention, ―Drivers’ Companion‖, can notice driver slee piness and warn the driver if he or she is too tired to be on the road.

The user wears a headset , which sends information about the driver’s brain waves to a tiny computer. The computer can be placed in front of the driver. The system then gives warnings, if needed. As the driver becomes sleepier, red color will be shown to warn him or her. The driver will also hear messages warning him to get off the road. The machine can say, ― You’re tired. Please take a break.‖

After sending her invention to the 2016 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, Wu was chosen as a finalist and was able to work with Dr. Jess Miller, who is a product development specialist.

― He helped me understand how important it is to make sure that my invention worked for the people who were using it and that it was user-friendly,‖ Wu says.

As a young scientist, Wu has some advice for other students of her age: I would like to tell them that they should choose something they’re interested in. Most American teenagers can’t wait to get rid of their ― metal mouth‖ nickname. They count down the days they can finally take their braces(牙箍) off. However, trendy teenagers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand can’t wait to get them on, even if they don’t need them.

Braces are the latest teenage fashion trend in Southeast Asia. Having a mouthful of metal has become so popular with Asian teens that there have been reports of many teens wearing fake braces. Many Asian beauty shops are now offering to put in cheap fake braces. There are even cheaper do-it-yourself braces such as ― Hello Kitty,‖ ―Mickey Mouse‖ or others for a price of around $100.

Braces are considered as a sign of wealth in Southeast Asia. A real set of braces in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, for example, will cost around $1,200, which is a large amount for the country with a GDP of$345 billion(one billion is 1,000 million), compared to the US which had a GDP of $15.06 trillion (one trillion is 1,000 billion) last year.

While Asian teens may think that their colorful fake braces are cool, experts say that these trendy fashion braces can

cause illness and can even lead to death. According to the New York Daily News, fake fashion braces have already been linked to the deaths of two teens in Thailand. A 17-year-old in the northeast city of Khon Kaen died from heart failure caused by a thyroid infection (甲状腺感染) from a pair of fake fashion braces. Police also linked the death of another 14-year-old girl in Chonburi to a pair of fashion braces she had bought from an illegal shop.

Although the government is giving warnings about fake braces, the trend has been going strong for at least four years. What’s worse, the trend for fake braces shows no sign of slowing down.

32.Teens in Southeast Asia wear fake braces mainly to ________.

A. follow fashion .

B. protect their teeth

C. show their DIY ability .

D. prove their social position.

33. Why does the author compare Thailand GDP with that of the US?

A. To explain the importance of the GDP.

B. To introduce the capital city of Thailand.

C. To describe the development of Thailand.

D. To show the high cost of braces in Thailand.

34. According to Paragraph 4, fake braces ________.

A. are very dangerous .

B. need to be improved

C. can treat tooth disease.

D. cost as much as real ones

35. What does the author think of the fashion trend?

A. Exciting.

B. Worrying.

C. Boring.

D. Acceptable.

You might think that ―global warming‖ means nothing more than a rise in the world’s temperature. But, rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation (撤离) of an island nation — the citizens of Tuvalu will have to leave their homeland.

During the 20th century, sea level has risen 8~12 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt water which has polluted the country’s drinking water.

Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.

Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their green house gas emissions (排放), which are a main cause of global warming.―By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,‖ Laupepa to ld the BBC.

Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.

Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable (易受影响的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his country of 311 000 an―endangered nation‖.

Recently, the TV show ―Where are we going, Dad?‖ produced by Hunan SatelliteTelevision is a big hit across nation. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the ―how to be a good father‖. As the young parents today are too busy to take care of their children, this new form of ―Lost on the way‖ played by nanny Daddy and cute kids triggered(触发)a lot of people’s emotional resonance(共鸣). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children. The TV shows like ―Children are hard to support!‖, ―Where are we going, Dad?‖, ―hot mom‖ and ―cute kids‖ are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents’ confusion in children’s education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.

In the real life, on the one hand, the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand, they continue to do so. The data collected by HNTV shows that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34.We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers. In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The participation of mother in the children’s education is also very low.

It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education, and where the parents will guide their chil dren to go that ―Where are we going, Dad?‖ shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independent personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.

32.To raise a child in modern society, parents should ________.

A.break down the barrier between children and teachers

B.play computer games with their children

C.balance well between family and career

D.keep their children at home to avoid socializing

33.Which of the following can be inferred in the passage?

A.36% of the audience of the program are female aged from 25-34.

B.Parents shouldn’t entirely leave the education of children to the old.

C.In a modern family it is often mothers who are responsible for raising a child.

D.The program shows us the confusion where the parents and children will go to play.

34.What does the underlined word ―participation‖ probably mean?

A.taking responsibility B.understanding

C.taking part D.keeping company

35.Which one is the best title of the passage?

A.New problems in Modern Children’s Edu cation

B.Modern Education is Important

C.Confusion Behind ―Where are we going, dad?‖

D.Nanny Daddy and Cute Kids

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分。)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding. 36

The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. 37 Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don’t have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.

The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’s understanding. 38_Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here ―learning‖ means understanding more, not remembering more information.

What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding39_ Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.

40_It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.

A.Thus, we can employ the word ―reading‖ in two distinct senses.

B.Such communication between unequals must be possible.

C.We can get access to the content of those materials easily.

A girl became a volunteer in the activities of Deathbed Care, which meant visiting and taking care of a patient suffering from an incurable disease with days numbered.

The girl was assigned to look after an old man suffering from cancer whose children lived abroad. Their living conditions were not satisfactory while the old man had a lot of savings. She was expected to comfort him and keep up his spirits.

Every Saturday the girl came on time to keep him company, telling him stories. When he was having an intravenous drip (静脉滴注), she would help massage his arms. The doctor found the patient much improved mentally. The old man began to involve himself actively in the medical treatment and he seldom shouted at others.

But something that happened made the doctor uneasy and puzzled. Each time the girl left, the old man would give her some money. As we know, DNA testing is very useful for crime fighting. But now crime fighters could have a new tool at hand. Researchers have developed a cutting-edge (前沿的) technique to identify human hair. Their test is quicker than DNA analysis techniques currently used by the police.

DNA testing is commonly used for identification because DNA is unique to each individual. However, environmental and chemical processes can degrade(降解) DNA, limiting its usefulness over time. Protein (蛋白质) in hair, on the other hand, is more stable than DNA but can also have variations (变异体) that may be unique to the individual.

―Our analysis process can be used universally, ‖says Ms. Huang, ―One of our samples even included dyed hair and the test was 100 per cent accurate. The test was able to distinguis h East Asians, Caucasians and South Asians.‖Dr. Beauchemin says she has got in touch with law enforcement agencies about using the new technology. She is also planning to collect more hair samples and continue her research with a goal of finding where exactly in the world hair sample is from, to look for more races and determine specific age.

―We are in a very similar place with protein-based identification to where DNA testing was during the early days of development,‖ said chemist Brad Hart. ―This method will be a game-changer, and while we’ve made a lot of progress toward improving it, there are steps to go before this new technique is able to reach its full potential.‖

64. What’s the main purpose of the text?

A. To analyze crime scenes.

B. To distinguish different races.

C. To show the usefulness of DNA testing.

D. To introduce a new identification method.

65. Which will be the most useful in identifying a person according to Brad Hart?

A. Chemical materials.

B. Protein in hair.

C. DNA variations.

D. Blood sample.

66. What’s the advantage of the protein-based identification over DNA testing?

A. Stability.

B. Popularity.

C. Security.

D. Convenience.

67. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the text?

A. DNA testing will soon reach its full potential.

B. Protein-based identification remains to be improved.

C. Protein-based identification has replaced DNA testing.

D. DNA testing develops as rapidly as protein-based identification.

D

Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word cold. For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold –blooded. Cold –blooded people act in merciless ways. They may do cruel things to others, and not by accident. For example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone, not in self-defense. He seemed to kill with no emotion.

Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression—to get cold feet –that has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you had decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have given up the position. All the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.

Cold can also affect your shoulder. You give someone the cold shoulder when you refuse to speak to them. You treat them in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face-to-face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.

A cold fish is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.

Out in the cold is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

68. The text is intended to tell us that_____.

A. cold weather has a great effect on human bodies.

B. many English expressions contain the word cold.

C. cold is a word all used to describe human emotions.

D. the word cold has many different meanings in English.

69. Which of the following can best describe a person who is unwilling to offer anything to others?

A. Cold-blooded.

B. To get cold feet.

C. A cold shoulder.

D. A cold fish.

70. If a teacher gives all the boys except Tom a pen as a prize, you can say Tom________.

A. is given the cold shoulder.

B. is punished by a cold fish.

C. is left out in the cold.

D. has got cold feet.

(5)y=a x(a>0且a≠1),y=sin x,y=cos x的定义域均为R. (6)y=log a x(a>0且a≠1)的定义域为(0,+∞). 3.

宁夏银川一中2020-2021学年高二上学期期末英语试题 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读选择 My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it. I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 1.Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 2.Which of the following can best r eplace the phrase “signed off” in Paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs B.provided fewer channels C.changed to commercials D.showed all-night movies 3.How did the author finally get his TV set working again? A.By shaking and hitting it. B.By turning it on and off. C.By switching channels. D.By having it repaired.

银川一中2020届高二(下)期中考试 英语试卷 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。(每小题2分,共计30分) A Books Recommended by TED Speakers A Mathematician’s Apology by G. H. Hardy This is the best book I know about the sh eer beauty of mathematics. Here’s one lovely quote from the book: “A mathematician, like a painter or a poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas.” —David Brenner (TED Talk: A new weapon in the fight against superbugs) The Future by Nick Montfort This is a short read but a great look at some key future thinkers throughout history. Through delightfully written case studies, Montfort makes the argument that the future can be made and not predicted. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in future studies and the role that sci-fi, speculative design and big ideas play in shaping our future relationship with technology. —Raphael Arar (TED Talk: How we can teach computers to make sense of our emotions) Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up by Patricia Ryan Madson “We all could use a lesson on how to have fun in business and in life. Madson does a wonderful job providing strategies on how to deal with life’s many challenging si tuations by drawing from the maxims of improvisational theater.” —Lisa Dyson (TED Talk: A forgotten Space Age technology could change how we grow food) If You Want to Write: A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland For those who know they have something to express, these stressful times can feel a bit hopeless — it may seem impossible to find the time, skill and energy to create. This is one of the most timeless books on how to regain that hope, and it’s also a delightful read, in and of itself. —Sebastian Wernicke (TED Talk: How to use data to make a hit TV show) 21. What is the topic of the talk given by Raphael Arar? A. A new weapon in the fight against superbugs. B. How we can teach computers to make sense of our emotions. C.
