For years I wanted a flower garden. I'd spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.

But then we had Matthew. And Marvin. And the twins, Alisa and Alan. And then Helen. Five children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.

Money was tight, as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would

want something that cost too much, and I'd have to say, “Do_you_see_a_money_tree_outside?Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.”

Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.

I wasn't sure, though. I mean, gardens do cost money, and after all these years I was used to living on a pretty lean, no-frills budget.

Then, one spring morning, on Mother's Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I realized that people were tooting their horns as they drove by. I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow, because I saw things blowing around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on—and I couldn't believe what I saw. There was a money tree in my yard!

I went outside to look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. Think of all the garden flowers I could buy with one hundred dollars! There was also a note attached:“IOU eight hours of digging time. Love, Marvin.”

Marvin kept his promise, too. He dug up a nice ten-by-fifteen foot bed for me. And my other children bought me tools, ornaments, a trellis(棚架), a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.

That was three years ago. My garden's now very pretty, just like what I wanted. When I go out and weed or tend my flowers, I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they are right there with me.

I live up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out of my window and think of the flowers I'll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes every time.

I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.

Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.

Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States,a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there's a lot we can do to lower the number.

You can take steps to save water in your home.To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day.Wash it only once a day.Run your dishwasher (洗碗机)only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.

16.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?

A.Using river water.

B.Throwing batteries away.

C.Paving parking lots.

D.Throwing rubbish into lakes.

17.What can be inferred from the text?

A.All water shortages are due to human behaviour.

B.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.

C.There is much we can do to reduce the family size.

D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.

18.The last paragraph is intended to ________.

A.show us how to fix leaks at home

B.tell us how to run a dishwasher

C.prove what drinking glass is best for us

D.suggest what we do to save water at home

19.The text is mainly about ________.

A.why paving roads reduces our water

B.how much we depend on water to live

C.why droughts occur more in dry climates

D.how human activity affects our water supply

“Confi dence”is probably one of the most noticeable traits(品质)in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk. Living and competing with all these confident American students, I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind. Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly. Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What's worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.

Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it. Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their speeches(the course I'm teaching here is Public Speaking). Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won't be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate programme.

D.understand what they think about

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner.Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries:Where is the line between what I control and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it.From the parents' point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents' complete unreasonableness. And of course, the_teenagers_see_it_in_exactly_the_same_way,_except_oppositely.Both feel trapped.

In this article, I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teenagers and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things.Examples include the colour of the teenager's hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong.Third, needing to be right. It doesn't matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect.Unfortunately, as long as parents and teenagers continue to assume that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.

36.Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?

A.Both can continue for generations.

B.Both are about where to draw the line.

C.Neither has any clear winner.

D.Neither can be put to an end.

37.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.The teenagers blame their parents for starting the conflict.

B.The teenagers agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.

C.The teenagers accuse their parents of misleading them.

D.The teenagers tend to have a full understanding of their parents.

38.Parents and teenagers want to be right because they want to ________.

A.give orders to the other

B.know more than the other

C.gain respect from the other

D.get the other to behave properly

39.What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

A.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.

B.Examples of the parent-teen war.

C.Solutions for the parent-teen problems.

D.Future of the parent-teen relationship.

About 30 years ago, I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later, my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office.

In the teacher's office, an exchange of greetings was followed by his questions:“Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)? Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”

Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? No, no, it can't be. What a helpless, lonely moment!

I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.

My son could not follow the teacher's directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting

the class. Didn't he know my son did not speak English yet?

He was angry:“Why hasn't your son been taught to speak English? Don't you speak English at home?”

“No, I don't speak English at home,” I replied, “I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language.”“Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all times? Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”

Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people”.Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.

As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的).Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others; it teaches people about other cultures and other places—something very basic and obviously lacking in the “educator” I met in New Jersey.

16.The teacher asked the author to his office ________.

A.to discuss Scola's in-class performance

B.to get Scola enrolled in kindergarten

Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behaviour.

One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study.

They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner's Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behaviour proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five per cent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science.

The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not.

The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked, the slower their mental development is.

20.According to the first study, we mainly infer that________.

One day, I received a call from a colleague. He was about to give a student a zero for his

answer to a physical problem, while the student claimed a perfect score. I was elected as their arbiter(仲裁人).I read the examination problem: “Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer(气压计).” The student had answered: “Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it,lower it to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of it is the height of the building.”

The student had really answered the question completely, but the answer didn't confirm his competence in physics. I suggested the student try again. I gave him six minutes to answer the question, warning that the answer should show some knowledge of physics. Five minutes later, he said he had many answers and clashed off one, which read: “Take the barometer to the top of the building and lean over the edge of the roof. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, use the physical formula (公式)to calculate the height of the building.”

At this point, my colleague had to accept it, and then the student made almost full marks. I couldn't help asking the student what the other answers were. He listed many others, and then added, “Probably the best is to take the barometer to the administrator and said to him,‘Sir, here is a fine barometer. If you tell me the height of the building, I will give it to you.’”

Then, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. He admitted that he did,but said that he was fed up with high school and college instructors trying to teach him how to think.

The name of the student was Bohr who later was famous all over the world. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922.

A.instructors can teach students how to think

B.arbiters can help students to get high scores

Travellers to developing countries should start with long-term basic health protection. This means vaccinations(疫苗接种) against polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. Other vaccinations will depend on where you are going, local conditions and your possible environment. Visitors to Yellow Fever areas such as West Africa should certainly be vaccinated against it. Check links for the latest news and don't forget your travel insurance. It's really worth the money. Water: In developing countries avoid drinking or even brushing your teeth with tap water. Drink bottled water and check that the cap is well sealed(封闭) when you buy it. Turning it upside down and watching for drops is one method of checking. If you can't buy it, purify it by boiling. Do not take ice in your drinks, unless it is frozen mineral water. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are fine from the bacteria point of view, though not so fine from a thirst point of view. Don't share water bottles with other travellers unless you want to share their bacteria too. Water filters (过滤器) are OK in theory but can break easily and usually don't filter some serious bacteria, such as hepatitis A and E. Force yourself to drink clean water, lots of it, if you want to avoid headaches and tiredness from a thirst. Water requirements at home are 6 glasses per day, so increase that figure by at least 3 times in tropical environment. Food: Avoid ice cream from unhealthy sources, raw fish, salad and uncooked food — unless you can peel it yourself. Most cases of diseases come from unclean food, not unclean water. Eat where it's busy. This means that the food is good or cheap or safe to eat! 1.When you plan to travel to developing countries you should first ________. A.choose countries where you will feel it convenient to travel B.make a good preparation to avoid being harmed or injured C.consider taking as much healthy food and clean water as possible D.check links for the latest news and buy your travel insurance

I was driving along a high road on my way to my daughter’s school.Over my road was another road which was built like a bridge for cars coming to the other way.I was hungry so I put the bag of apples in the seat beside me and started to eat one. Suddenly I saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. Then my car started to shake!I didn’t know what was happening.Perhaps something had gone wrong with my car.I drove a little more slowly and then I stopped the car and at the same moment the road fell onto the car in front of me. I found myself in the dark.I couldn’t move. The bottom parts of both of my legs and my feet were hurting badly and I couldn’t move them. All around me was quiet. But above me I could hear shouts and a lot of noise. Then I memorized (记起) what had happened.I had been in an earthquake. For about two hours nobody came.Luckily I could reach the bag of apples,so at least I had plenty to eat. Then I heard people climbing towards me.A team of people had come to see if anyone was under the broken road.I called out,“I’m here!” I heard a shout.Soon a stranger climbed to the side of the road near my car.“How are you doing?” he asked.
