二、阅读理解:共15题每题2分共30分

Nelson Mandela was a figure of international fame, and many details of his life and career were public knowledge. But here are a few things you may not have known about the late South African leader.

He was a boxing fan. In his youth, Nelson Mandela enjoyed boxing. Even during the 27 years he spent in prison, he would exercise every morning."I did not enjoy the violence of boxing so much as the science of it. I was interested in how one moved one's body to protect oneself, how one used a strategy both to attack and retreat, how one paced oneself over a match,"he wrote in his autobiographyLongWalktoFreedom.

His original name was not Nelson. Rolihlahla Mandela was nine years old when a teacher at the primary school where he was studying in Qunu, South Africa, gave him an English name—Nelson—in accordance with the custom to give all school children Christian names.

This was common practice in South Africa and in other parts of the continent, where a person could often be given an English name that foreigners would find it easier to pronounce.

He had his own law firm, but it took him years to get a law degree. Mr. Mandela studied law on and off from 1939, failing about half the courses he took, and in August 1952, he and Oliver

Tambo established South Africa's first black law firm in Johannesburg. He persevered to finally secure a law degree while in prison in 1989.

He was on a US terror watch list until 2008. Before this, along with other former ANC leaders, Mr. Mandela was only able to visit the US with special permission from the secretary of state, because the ANC had been designated (指定) a terrorist organization in the 1980s by South Africa's former government.

"It is frankly a rather embarrassing matter that I still have to give up my own counterparts—the foreign minister of South Africa, not to mention the great leader, Nelson Mandela,"then Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in 2008.

He forgot his glasses there when he was released from prison. Mr. Mandela's release on February 11, 1990 followed years of political pressure. On that day, he was"astonished and a little alarmed", he recalled later. Mr. Mandela and his then-wife Winnie were taken to the center of Cape Town to address a huge crowd. But when he pulled out the text of his speech, he realized he had forgotten his glasses there and had to borrow Winnie's.

17.FromLongWalktoFreedom, we also know that Nelson .

A.was a boxing fan

B.got great international fame

C.was his original name

D.fought against a terrorist organization

18.In which country was Nelson able to enter only with special permission?

A.In South Africa.

B.In the United States.

C.In England.

D.In Africa

19.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.A teacher at a primary school gave Mandela an English name Rolihlahla Mandela.

B.Then Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice disagreed with Mandela to visit America in 2008.

C.Mandela left his glasses in prison when he was set free because of his astonishment then.

D.Nelson gave his speech to his whole country immediately after his freedom without any notes. Two facts are often covered up in the public conversation about women, work, and family. First, the vast majority of married mothers don't want to work full-time. Second, married mothers who are able to cut back on work to meet their family's needs tend to be happier.

Mothers and fathers were asked by Pew if they had made family-related sacrifices for work—from quitting their job to turning down a promotion. Pew found that 65 percent of mothers had made such a family-related sacrifice, compared to 45 percent of fathers.

Women with children were more likely to be"very happy"with their lives if they made a

family-related work sacrifice. By contrast, the happiness of married men was not significantly related to making work sacrifices for their families.

These results do not prove that spending less time on work makes women happier. It could be, for instance, that happier women are more likely to make work sacrifices. Or it could be that more abundant mothers, who are more likely to be happy above a certain level of income, can spend more time with their families than poorer mothers.

Most mothers would prefer not to work full-time, and the most popular option for women, when it comes to balancing work and family, is part-time work. A New York Times survey this year found that 49 percent of mothers wished to work part-time, compared to 27 percent who wished to work full-time.

This data suggests that one reason why mothers who make work sacrifices are happier is that they would prefer to reduce their work—at least for some portion of their lives as mothers—and are happier when they can do so.

This reality is often covered up in the public conversation about work, women, and family, but as Catherine atTheNewYorkTimesobserved:"Not everyone aims to be an executive at Facebook, like Sandberg, or to set foreign policy, like Anne-Marie Slaughter (author of the bestsellerWhyWomenCan'tHaveItAll)."Instead, as Pew said, most women are"looking for flexibility and balance"when it comes to considering their aspirations for success at home and work.

Again, in the public conversation and the formulation of public policies regarding work and family, let us not forget that the happiest mothers are those who are able to lean homeward, at least for a season in their lives.

20.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs .

A.all the topics about women, work, and family are directly discussed in public

B.most mothers want to continue their full-time work for family happiness

C.most mothers are willing to make more sacrifices for their family

D.65 percent of fathers willingly make a family-related sacrifice to gain their promotion

21.As for work, the most popular choice for mothers from a New York Times survey is . A.a part-time job B.a full-time job C.an abundant job D.an optional job 22.What's the author's attitude towards the happiest mothers mentioned in the text?

A.Positive.

B.Critical.

C.Disagreeable.

D.Sympathetic. 23.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Married Mothers Who Are at Work Are Happier

B.Married Mothers Who Cut Back on Work Are Happier

C.Mothers Who Spend Much Time with Children Are Tired Very Much

D.Mothers Who Still Have Their Full-time Jobs Are Much Energetic

Pele, Ronaldinho, Garrincha—the names of past Brazilian superstars —roll off the tongue like a verse of great romance poetry. Thesemonikersare not always formal names but instead are often nicknames adopted for soccer.

Pele, widely considered the best soccer player ever, is actually named Edson Arantes do Nascimento, after the American inventor Thomas Edison. Pele said he got his nickname as a kid when he mispronounced the name of Brazilian goalkeeper Bilé as Pilé. A playmate used the mistake to laugh at him, and when he moved to the city of Bauru, the"Pilé!"chants became Pele, the name he used to represent Brazil in four World Cups."Thanks to that goalkeeper Bilé, and a playmate's little joke, I became Pele,"he wrote."Now it's known across the world."

Hulk, aged 28, the star forward on the current Brazilian World Cup team, got his nickname because he was addicted to the comic book character at the age of 17 in 2003. But physical attributes are often used to peg nicknames and if you take one look at Givanildo Vieira de Souza's powerful build it's easy to see why"Hulk"stuck.

Dunga (Hulk's formal name), captain of Brazil's 1994 World Cup title team, got his nickname from the Brazilian name for Dopey in Portuguese, from a Disney's film named"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"—because of his short height as a kid.

Garrincha (which means little bird in Portuguese), who played for Brazil in three World Cups from 1958 to 1966, was given a nickname for Manoel Francisco dos Santos because he flew right through defenders with his dribbles (带球).

A boy named Artur, which became Arturzico and then was abbreviated (缩写) again to Zico, was the famous Brazilian player of the 70s and 80s.

Sometimes the abbreviation is not a choice. Ronaldinho used his nickname to avoid being confused with his slightly older teammate Ronaldo—they both were on Brazil's 2002 World Cup winning team.

57.are conducted

【解析】考查语态。根据语境分析, conduct与主语all international conferences and competitions 在逻辑上是动宾关系,故用被动语态;又因该句表示的是现在的一般状况,主语是复数概念,

故用are conducted。

58.If

【解析】考查连词。由上下文语境可知,该复合句中的主句和从句在逻辑上是条件和结果的关系,故用if引导条件状语从句,由于if位于句首,因此其首字母必须大写。
