A

A desert is a beautiful land of silence and space. The sun shines, the wind blows, and time and space seem endless. Nothing is soft. The sand and rocks are hard, and many of the plants even have hard needles instead of leaves.

The size and location(分布) of the world's deserts are always changing. Over millions of years, as climates change and mountains rise, new dry and wet areas develop. But within the last

100 years, deserts have been growing at a frightening speed. This is partly because of natural changes, but the greatest makers are humans.

Humans can make deserts, but humans can also prevent their growth. Algeria Mauritania is planting a similar wall around Nouakchott, the capital. Iran puts a thin covering of petroleum(石油) on sandy areas and plants and trees. The oil keeps the water and small trees in the land, and men on motorcycles(摩托车) keep the sheep and goats away. The USSR and India are building long canals to bring water to desert areas.

21.In this passage, the und erlined word “needles” refers to ________.

A.small, thin pieces of steel

B.long, thin pieces of branches

C.small pointed growth on the stem(茎) of a plant

D.small, thin pieces of sticks

22.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.The greatest desert makers are humans.

B.There aren't any living things in the deserts.

C.Deserts have been growing quickly.

D.The size of the deserts is always changing.

从第一段最后一句“many of the plants even have hard needles instead of leaves”可知B项错误。

23.People in some countries are fighting a battle against ________.

A.the growth of deserts

B.the disappearance of desert plants

C.natural changes

D.congenital climate

从第三段“Humans can make deserts, but humans can also prevent their growth.(人类可能造成沙漠,但人类也可以防止沙漠的增长。)”

24.Choose the sentence which best gives the purpose of the passage.

A.The deserts of the world are always changing.

B.Man is to take measures to control the growth of the world's deserts.

C.Deserts are lands of silence and space.

D.Deserts have grown at a fast pace in the past 10 years.

B

Do you want to see the effects of global warming? Then head north. Recent studies indicate that the North Pole, instead of coated in thick sea ice, could be underwater during the summer in less than 10 years. But seeing the Arctic terrain (地带) up close isn't easy, unless you're handy with a dogsled (狗拉的雪橇). Steger is going to take all of us there.

Steger, 64, is a great polar explorer. He was the first person to make a dogsled trip to the North Pole, and is also a devoted environmentalist who was early to ring the alarm bell on global warming.

Steger is about to lead a term of six young adventurers on a 1400mile, 60daylong dogsled trip across Ellesmere Island, in the Canadian Arctic. The sea ice in that region should still be frozen. “We want to take our audience to the front lines of global warming, ”says Steger. The team will be uploading videos, stories and photos to the website as they march along, allowing armchair adventures and kids in classrooms to follow their progress day to day.

Steger's team will include some alreadyfamous young explorers. Sam Branson, 22yearold, is an experienced Arctic traveler. Also on the journey will be 27yearold Norwegian Sigrid Ekran. Last year Ekran became only the second woman in history to win Rookie (新秀) of the Year for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.

What they will see may be surprising. Even Steger doesn't know exactly what to expect. Climate change has already reshaped the geography of the Arctic. “Within a decade or less, it's going to be impossible to reach the North Pole by dog team without flotation(漂浮), ”says Steger.

25.We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.

A.climate change happens only in the far north

B.the effects of climate change are most obvious in the Arctic terrain

C.climate change is going to be the biggest issue facing human race

D.climate change is the result of pollution

26.It can be inferred that the aim of the dogsled trip is to ______.

A.encourage young people to explore the Arctic

B.present the Arctic terrain to geography classes

C.study the cause of climate change in polar region

D.raise awareness of the damage that climate change is causing in polar regions

27.Why does Steger NOT know what they will see during their trip?

A.Because it will be the first time for him to go that far north.

B.Because the sea ice in that region should still be frozen.

C.Because the geography there has changed, due to higher temperatures.

D.Because they will go there by boat instead of by sledge.

C

Several years ago,the mayor of Chicago,Illinois, visited Germany, a leader in green roof design.Mayor Richard Daley later decided to have vegetation planted on Chicago City Hall. Today, the tops of many other buildings also look like parks. In Canada, the Coast Plaza Hotel in Vancouver has a forest on its roof. New York City has an unusual demonstration farm for hydroponics. The farm is on a boat called the Science Barge. Rainwater and purified river water are used to grow lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The farm shows the possibilities for designing rooftop systems.

Green roofs are designed to save energy and capture rainwater. Rooftops covered with plants help keep buildings cool. They can extend the life of a roof. And they can reduce water running off into streets and storming water systems.

Experts say green roofs usually do not get much above twentyseven degrees Celsius. So temperatures might not be a problem for growing. But rooftop gardeners have to be careful not to put too much weight on the roof. This is true whether plants are grown in soil or water.

Earlier in 2008,researchers in Texas reported that green roofs can reduce a building's air conditioning costs by about onefifth compared to blacktop roofs. But they also reported that not all green roofs perform equally well. They found that designs differ in their ability to keep buildings cool and to capture rainwater. The researchers put experimental roofs on top of metal insulated boxes, to recreate green roof conditions. The study compared products from six companies to help businesses understand how to improve their designs. Each rooftop had sixteen different kinds of plants native to Texas. The researchers say the presence of native plants likely helped all the green roofs capture water better compared to sedums.Sedums are plants that need little water and often are used on green roofs. The native plants could take in more water and release more of it to the atmosphere.

29.The underlined word “storming” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ________.

A.attacking B.controlling

C.attracting D.managing

30.The advantages of green roofs are mentioned in the passage EXCEPT ________.

A.changing the local weather

B.prolonging the roof's life

C.keeping the house cool

D.reducing the house's air conditioning costs

根据第二段第二句中的“Rooftops covered with plants help keep buildings cool. They can extend the life of a roof”可知B、C两项正确;根据最后一段首句可知D项正确。

31.According to the passage, which conclusion is WRONG?

A.Sometimes green roofs may break down the house.

B.Not all the green roofs can reduce the building's air conditioning costs equally.

William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13,1865.His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered“little of childhood but its pain”.In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama (戏剧) and poetry.

Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding ant Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

Compared with his dramatic works,Yeats' poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging.Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms,he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life.Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet Auden wrote, among others, the following liners:

Earth, receive an honored guest:

William Yeats is laid to rest.

Let the Irish vessel (船) lie

Emptied of its poetry.

A.It filled Yeats's childhood with laughter.

B.It was shocked by Yeats's choice.

C.It was a typically wealthy family.

D.It had an artistic atmosphere.

根据文章第一段可以排除A、B、C三项,而第一段第四句“In fact,he inherited(继承)excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters.”

33.According to the passage, what do we know about Yeats' life?

A.Yeats founded the first Irish theater.

B.Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.

C.Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.

D.Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Noble Prize.

根据最后一段第三句“Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40,he would probably now be valued as a minor poet”可知,Yeats应该是在40岁之后,也就是大约1910s开始写作大量优秀的诗歌。

34.What kind of feeling is expressed in W. H. Auden's lines?

A.Envy. B.Sympathy.

C.Emptiness. D.Admiration.

35.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Yeats was 58 years old when he won the Nobel Prize.

B.Yeats settled on literature, particularly drama (戏剧) and poetry.

C.His early theatrical experiments were successful at the beginning.

D.He had not enjoyed a major public life all Yeats' life.

故选A项。

Dear Mrs Winthorp,

So my first week at college is over! No lectures this morning,so I think I'd email you and let you know what things are going.

I'm glad to say that anything has worked out fine in the dorm. I remember asking for a room as far away from the lifts as possible and they find me a comfortable one on second floor. There are two girls from my course here and I plan to make friend with them so that we can help each other on the course work. Everyone else seems very nice and warmly here.

Well,I had better to stop now. I'm going to attend mine first lesson this afternoon, for I've got some preparation to make. Keep in touch.

Best,
