More and more American parents, students, educators, political and business leaders have come to see the importance of Chinese on the world stage. As a result, Americans hoping to learn Chinese are growing in number though they face a lot of difficulties.

Liu Chuansheng, chairperson of the University Council at Beijing Normal University, talked about this situation. “There have been 300 million Chinese learning English, and I know that there are more and more Americans beginning to learn Chinese. I remember when I came to the U. S. there were only 250 schools offering Chinese classes; when I left in 2005, there were already 2,400 schools hoping to offer Chinese classes. Today more than 700 schools are offering Chinese classes, and 4,500 are planning to do so.”

“This is an important time in America. We have suffered from an economic crisis; there is swine flu(猪流感) ---- all part of our lives. We need to be competitive to deal with the world and make an effort to understand each other,” said Shuhan Wang, head of Chinese Language Initiatives at Asia Society. “The number of Chinese language teachers remains the key bottleneck,” she said. “And the need for specialized teachers becomes greater, as there is increasing popularity of early language learning ---- kindergarten through 8th grades.”

Jon M. Huntsman Jr., governor(州长) of Utah, has led his state to the front in teaching Chinese. “While math and science remain main studies,” he said, “language is going to be an important drive in educ ation. A film was at the Circle Five Ranch to film a Marlboro commercial. This is in 1868, before they prohibited cigarette ads from American television. Darrell Winfield was watching the crew set up the equipment. The scene included an actor crossing a river on horseback, but when the time came to shoot, the man was too drunk to ride. Someone from the crews saw Winfield and asked him if he would ride the horse for 50. “Hell, ” said Winfield, “for 50 bucks, I'll jump that damn horse over the moon!”

To people in many countries, Winfield is just a familiar but nameless face, a simple

cowboy with an advertising message about a connection between the West and a brand of cigarettes. Few people know that he is advertising message about a connection between the West and a brand of cigarettes. Few people know that he is 55, a family man who’s been married to the same woman for 37 years and has 5 children and 7 grandchildren. Most surprisingly, he’s a real, working cowboy who raises horses in his ranch in Wyoming.

On e of the most striking things about the Marlboro Man is that success hasn’t changed him much. He says that complete strangers sometimes come up to him and say, “I’ve met you. know you from somewhere. ”Whenever it happens, he says that he gets embarrassed. 2.Which of the following statements is true?

Every profession, every art,and every science has its technical vocabulary. Its function is partly to name things or processes which can not be described in ordinary English.Such special terms are necessary in technical discussion of any kind.Being universally understood by the specialists of the particular science or art, these terms have the exactness of a mathematical formula(公式).Besides, they save time, for it is much more convenient to name a process than to describe it.

Different occupations, however, differ widely in the character of their special vocabularies. In trades and handicrafts, and other professions, like farming and fishery, that have occupied great numbers of men in the past, the technical vocabulary is very old.It consists largely of native words, or borrowed words that have worked themselves into the very fibre of our language. As a consequence, though highly technical in many particulars, these vocabularies are more familiar in sound;and more generally understood, than most other technicalities.

Yet every profession still possesses a large body of technical terms that remain extremely unfamiliar, even to educated speech. And the amount has been much increased in the last fifty years.New terms are invented with the greatest freedom, and abandoned unconcernedly when they have served their turn. Most of the new inventions of words and expressions are restricted to special discussions, and seldom get into general conversation.Yet no profession is,nowadays,as all professions once were,a closed

association.Specialists in different fields share ideas and associate freely with each other. Furthermore, what is called “popular science” familiarizes everybody with modern views and recent discoveries. Any important experiment, though made in a remote lab, is at once reported in the newspaper, and everybody is soon talking about it—as in the case of the Roentgen rays and wordless telegraph. Thus our common speech is always taking up new technical terms and making them commonplace.

67.Technical terms are created so .

A.specialists may communicate more easily

B.people may enjoy varieties of occupations

C.people may save time in everyday discussions

D.specialists may well accept mathematical formulas

68.The writer lists wireless telegraph as an example to show special words .

A.should represent popular science

B.may become part of common speech

C.should be restricted to scientific fields

D.may be considered great inventions of man

69.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Nonteehnical words may be replaced.

B.Media helps to popularize special terms.

C.Various professionals exchange their terms.

D.Educated people know most technical terms.

I don’t like getting up too early unless I have to. When you’re filming, you’ve got make-up on, which doesn’t happen often. As I’m not filming at present I’ll get up at 8.30.

Work normally means Matt coming over to my house about 10 am. We’re writing at the moment. We’ll chat for a bit before going to my study. One of us will have an idea for a sketch (梗概), we’ll talk about the characters and when we feel we have enough we’ll start writing.

Matt and I met at the National Youth Theatre in 1990 and started doing shows together in ’95, at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. We know we’re onto something if we’ve made each other laugh, and that’s a really special moment. It’s not always like that, but we’re comfortable enough with each other that we can be honest and go. Some days you’re not in the mood to be funny—like writing when my dad was dying of cancer, or when Matt was separating from his partner.

We stop for lunch and sometimes go to Wagamama in Camden, but the last time we were followed by paparazzi (狗仔队), which gets you down—who wants to be pictured eating noodles?

When I’m not writing with Matt I work on other projects. My second children’s book comes out later in the year. It’s called Mr. Stink. The first one I dedicated to my three-year-old nephew, Eddie. Both books have been illustrated by Quentin Blake; it’s been a thrill to work with him—like 20 years ago reading a Roald Dahl book and looking at those drawings, then one day that person illustrates your work… magical.

At 5 I go swimming in Soho. My trainer makes me do horrible exercises, but I always feel better after.

Being in all day, I like to go out in the evening and look smart, but not like I’ve come out of the City. I’m a tall, broad guy and well-dressed.

For dinner I’ll meet friends. When you’re a single guy it’s great to have some good female

friends. Or I might take my mum to the theatre, as I know she really appreciates it. I like watching TV comedy shows to see what everyone’s doing. When you see something impressive it makes y ou work harder. I also love Larkin’s poems: they don’t try to transcend (超越) the commonplace; they’re much more straightforward.

Poetry is great to dip into before going to bed, rather than falling asleep reading a novel and being confused over what you’ve read or not. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in seven years; unfortunately, I rely on pills. I’ve tried everything. If I could wish anything for myself, I’d wish I could sleep better.

67. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. the author spends much time with his friends

B. the author and Matt are both famous in the district

C. the author doesn’t care much about what to wear

D. the author works at home and seldom goes out every day

68. Where does the passage most likely appear?

A. In a travel diary.

B. In a news column.

C. In an online diary.

D. In a research paper.

69. Why does the author read some poetry before going to bed?

A. Because poetry can often bring him some funny ideas.

B. Because poetry is much easier to understand than novels.

C. Because poetry is very abstract and reflects unusual things.

D. Because poetry can be of some help for him to kill time.

70. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. A day’s work with Matt

B. A new life-style

C. A life in the day

D. A good way to write

As skies are filled with millions of migrating(迁徙)birds, European scientists say the seasonal wonder appears to be strange: The fatter the bird, the better it flies.

The results of their study led to a theory opposite to a central one of aerodynamics(空气动力学), which says that the power needed to fly increases with weight.

For birds, obviously, the cost of flying with heavy fat is much smaller than we used to think. Researchers found that red knot wading birds double their normal body weight of 100 grams before making their twice-a-year nonstop flight between the British Isles and the Russian Arctic. Distance: 5, 000 kilometers.

Another study in the magazine Nature measured the advantage of flying in an aerodynamic group which allows birds to save energy by flying smoothly and quietly in the lead bird’s air stream.

Flying in groups, their heart rates were 14.5 percent lower than flying alone, according to Henri, a French scientist. The findings help explain how birds complete difficult migrations. Researchers had thought that thinner, stronger birds would have the best chance to survive.

The first study suggests that building up fat to be burnt as fuel during the migration is worth more than the energy it takes to carry the additional weight.

In the study, researchers said their team studied the birds flown at different body weights during 28 simulated(模拟的)flights. They forced a small amount of special water into the birds’ bodies so that they could measure the amount of energy burnt dur ing the flight.

60.A red knot wading bird of 100 grams will probably weigh_____before making its nonstop migrating flight.

A.50 grams

B.100 grams

C.150 grams

D.200 grams

61.During their migrating flight, red knot wading birds can save energy by flying_______.

A.separately

B.alone

C.in groups

D.in pairs

62.A_______red not wading bird has a better chance to survive during its migrating flight.

A.stronger

B.weaker

C.thinner

D.fatter

63.The best title for this passage may probably be________.

A.Birds Thin Down For Journey

B.Birds Fatten Up For Journey

C.How Birds Build Up Fat For Journey

D.How Birds Burn Energy For Journey

AAAGH! The Generation 90s is coming!

Wearing earphones, using complex Net language and constantly text messaging friends, the Gen-90s following the Gen-80s begin to make their world debut

Each generation or age group has its own symbols and lifestyle. Read on and judge for yourselves if you fit the Gen-90s group.

Earphones

These little devices seem to grow on the heads of the Gen-90s. They might lead to MP3, MP4 or MP101 players, giving these young people a plugged-in, cool and perhaps self-addicted look, of course, life is not always music to the ears.

Martian language

They have created their own code-like online language. It’s a mixture of English, Japanese and Chinese that perhaps only Martians can understand. This is an imaginative generation, though they need to be careful to keep it out of their term papers.

Self-Portrait

Saying “cheese” to their own digital cameras is usual for this gen eration. A little bit of narcissism (自恋) never hurts anyone. It helps them reflect a little on their own lives. But be aware of the risks of posting private photos online.

Text-messaging

They can type their mobile phones as fast as they can speak. This is a generation that respects efficiency. However, oral communication is important and will never go out of style. 16.According to the passage, if you belong to the Gen-90s , you will _______ .

A. just appreciate yourself and ignore others’ strengths.

B. have your own symbols and lifestyle.

C. have the same symbols and lifestyle of the Gen-80s.

D. like music and dance very much.

17.According to the text, the writer will choose ______ as a good example to the Gen-90.

A. Li Hua likes music and always wearing iPod

B. Zhang Chao is not only an imaginative boy but do everything efficiently.

C. Lily is a shy girl and she doesn’t like making friends.

D. Fangfang likes being taken photos and often posting them on line.

18.According to this passage, which is FALSE?

A. Not all teens are cautious about posting photos.

B. They type their mobile phones so fast that it can catch the speed of speaking.

C. The Gen-90s have a preference for some music players, and even regard them as a necessary part of life.

D. T hey don’t use the cool and complex online language in formal writing.

19.The main idea of the passage is about________.

A. the Gen-90s’ happy life

B. the difference between the Gen-80s and the Gen-90s

C. the Gen-90s’ unique lifestyle and some practical warnings

D. the similarities between the Gen-80s and the Gen-90s

20.Although the weathermen’s forecasts for a month ahead are only little better than guesswork, they are now making long-term forecasts into the next century with growing confidence. The m ain trend in the world’s climate in the coming years will, scientists say, be a predictable result of man’s activities.

At the start of the industrial revolution nearly two centuries ago, man set off a big experiment in planetary engineering. Unaware of what he was doing, he spared no thought for the consequences. Today the possible outcome is alarmingly clear, but the experiment is unstoppable. Within the lifetime of many of us, the Earth may become warmer than it has been for a thousand years. By the middle of this century it may be warmer than it has been since the last Ice Age.

A warmer climate may seem welcome, but it could bring many dangers:damages to crops in the world’s main food-producing areas, famine(饥荒), economic instability, civil unrest and even war.

In the much longer term, melting of the great ice-caps of Greenland and Antarctica could raise sea-levels throughout the world. The average sea-level has already risen a foot since the turn of the last century, and if the ice-caps disappear completely, it would rise by nearly 200 feet. Complete melting might take many centuries, but even a small increase in sea-level would threaten low-lying parts of the world such as the Netherlands.

44. Long-term weather forecasts beyond the year 2050 may seem strange because ____.

A. none of us will be alive then

B. weathermen can even forecast next month’s weather correctly

C. weathermen can forecast much better than they used to

D. no one can stop engineering experiments

45. Weathermen believe that our future climate will be the direct result of ____.

A. the big scientific experiment

B. clever long-term forecasts

C. the melting of the ice-caps

D. planets changing course

46. One of the results of a warmer world climate could be ____.

A. an increase in food production

B. greater co-operation between countries

C. the death of millions of people from starvation

D. a reduction in the amount of oil we use

47. Scientists are fairly sure that by the year 2050, _______.

A. the sea-level will have risen obviously

B. there will have been the Third World War

C. most countries will have been flooded

D. the polar ice-caps will have melted completely

Finding summer jobs for teenagers has not always been easy, but now you no longer have to worry about what your kid can do to earn their own money. Recently I found some different sites online that offer information about what kids can do. Below is some of that information, along with questions to think about to help you come up with your own ideas.

Ideas for summer work:

● Parks and Recreation Programs.

● Babysitting (当临时保姆) during the day of school.

● Working part-time at a day care for the summer.

● Car washing.

● Working at local vegetable stands.

The easiest way for you to find ways for your child to make money is to think about others’ inconveniences (不方便). Think of things you need done, or would like to have done, and what you would consider paying for these things to get done. Once you have some ideas, you can sit down with your child and talk to them about what they would be interested in doing. Then once you have an idea of what they want to do you can help them come up with fair prices.

Preferably you would want to only have your child working with people you know and trust, or in the least bit you could have your child pick a partner. That way with each of them carrying cell phones, even those without service can call 911, they will be much safer.

Have you ever thought, “I wish I could take a year off and just travel around the world”? Well, three lucky American teenagers were able to do just that. The teens—two males and one female--got an all-expenses paid, yearlong hike to five continents.

This trip didn’t include any five-star hotels or shopping funs. Eighteen-year-old Jamie Fiel from Keller, Texas, 17-year-old Arsen Ewing from Canyon, California, and 16-year-old Tyler Robinson from Lincoln, Massachusetts, didn’t expect fancy treatment. They signed up for the experience of a lifetime, which included hard work, often uncomfortable accommodations,

and encounters with some of nature’s most dangerous animals and environments.

Jamie, Arsen, and Tyler were among hundreds of high school kids nominated by their science teachers to take this trip. Earthwatch Institute sponsored (赞助) this adventure. Each year, Earthwatch employs thousands of volunteers worldwide to help with scientific research projects.

The group went all around the world to get a close look at the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Their assignments were as varied as their locations, and included measuring and attending pink flamingos in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, and tracking giant sea turtles in Costa Rica.

As they worked with the Earthwatch scientists, Jamie, Arsen, and Tyler began to understand that we are at a critical moment in the life of our planet. Time for change is running out. As the teens went from country to country and witnessed different environmental dangers and challenges, they understood that solutions to important environmental issues start with the power of one person's actions. They realized that each of them can make a difference.

2. What’s true about their journey?

A. They had to pay for their journey on their own expense.

B. They often had to move from one hotel to another.

C. They had to take great pains to collect environmental information.

D. They received a warm welcome every time they arrived at a new place.

3. It can be inferred that Earthwatch Institute could be _____.

A. an international university that takes in students from all over the world

One suicide and three attempted ones that left two seriously injured, all by middle school students in Shanghai last week, cast a gloom (忧郁) over an otherwise happy beginning of a new term there. The terrible things took place even as the Ministry of Education and China Central Television organized the first lesson on TV about personal safety for students last Monday, the first day of the new semester. Such things suggest that this first lesson is more than necessary. Not only should kids be ta ught how to protect themselves in times of emergency, they should also be made aware of the value of tile2 One student was prevented from killing himself from his school building. He said he just could not accept the fact of not being able to go tip to a higher grade with his classmates, and thus considered life meaningless. Another 12-year-old boy who jumped off a building to his death was said to have been a good student, and no one could say why he chose to end his life. Obviously, their inner worlds were seriously affected. But when they chose to take their own lives, their

irresponsible choice was clearly the result of a lack of adequate understanding of the value of life.

The ancient sage Confucius (孔子) stressed that one must protect even one's hair and skin from being hurt. He meant that the sense of responsibility for one's parents was important as far as the value of life was concerned. When we talk about the enthusiasm of making contributions to our motherland, we are referring to values that constitute the nobler part of the meaning of life. The value of life should be far beyond the concern for personal interest.

Undoubtedly, those kids who chose to take their own lives were faced only with their own sadness that they could not overcome. If they had a little concern for their parents, for their parents' expectations of them or for their own potential contributions to this world in the future, they would not have gone that far. Difficulties or sufferings are supposed to help kids develop their sense of responsibility and thus help them better understand the value of life. Too much attention and care from their parents and grandparents have made most of the only children self-centered. Many think it is natural that they deserve to be taken care of by others in whatever way they want. They expect to have their problems solved by their parents or someone else. With such a false sense, they fail to grasp the tough reality of life. They suffer from the illusion (幻觉) that their life should be nothing but plain sailing, Whenever the illusion is broken, they can hardly gather enough courage to face life as it is. So a hotline is indeed necessary to help those kids who find it hard to accept the tough reality of life. But parents and teachers also need to take lessons from the things. They need to know that life should not always be sugar-coated for kids; they should be made to taste the bitter side too as early as possible. 28.From the pa ssage we know that _________.

A. four students took their lives in Shanghai last week

B. being unable to catch up with other classmates led to the 12-year-old boy killing himself

C. the importance of life lies in the sense of responsibility for parents

D. parents are supposed to tell the kids the bitter side of life as well as the sweet side

29.What mainly causes those kids to take their own lives is that _________.

A. they are worried that they may fall behind others in studies

B. they lack the respect for their parents

C. they may be physically healthy, but mentally unhealthy

D. their parents expect too much from them

30.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A. An irresponsible choice.

B. The value of life.

I sometimes wonder if old Finchley has the right personality to be a research scientist. He keeps asking when he’ll be coming back. After all, it was his own fault. Nobody tries out what has just been invented on themselves any more but Finchley. Well, he must have pumped about a thousand c. c. s into himself before I noticed he was clearly becoming smaller.

It was funny watching him, because his clothes remained the same in size. They simply piled up around him so that he looked like a small boy in his father’s

clothes. But he kept getting smaller and smaller. As my colleague Dawson and I watched him, he disappeared! All we could see was Finchley’s clothes on the floor. They looked so strange, because the lab coat was on top, shirt and trousers inside and, I suppose, underclothes inside again. It gave me a strange feeling, and I think Dawson was a bit shaken, too.

Dawson was sitting on his chair in front of a microscope he’d been using to examine a family of mites(螨虫). He looked through the scope kind of absently again, and was nearly scared to lose awareness when he found old Finchley waving back from the other end.

It seems as if Finchley had taken a free ride on a dust mite and landed on the land of the mite family. Of course, we didn’t know till Finchley told us later. But anyhow, as I said, Dawson nearly passed out. He jumped off his chair and pointed at the microscope, to shocked to speak.

31.Finchley disappeared because ________.

A. he took something poisonous

B. he was changed into a dust mite

C. his father’s clothes totally covered him up

D. what he and his colleagues invented resulted in his disappearace

32. It frightened Dawson to see Finchley _______.

D. gradually disappeared in the lab

33. It can be inferred that Finchley, Dawson and the writer have possibly invented _____.

A. some kind of medicine

B. a new powerful microscope

C. a machine to make people small

D. a new way to make a culture of mite

34. It can probably be concluded that Finchley ________.

A. passed out there and then

B. is not fit to be a scientist

C. is a devoted scientist

D. will remain tiny all the time

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank you note for helping me. Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day,and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars —was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment,so when I got home,I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.

When a dirty and untidy orange cat showed up in the prison yard,I was one of the first to go out there and pet it.I hadn’t touched a cat or a dog in over 20 years.I spent at least 20 minutes, knelt down behind the kitchen as the cat rolled around, relaxed. What he was expressing outwardly, I was feeling inwardly. It was an amazing bit of grace to feel him under my hand and note that I was reaching a life or another creature with something as simple as my care. Over the next few days, there were other prisoners responding to the cat.Every yard period,a group of prisoners gathered there. They stood around talking and taking turns petting the cat. These were guys you wouldn’t usually find talking to each other.Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.Bowls of milk and water ap peared along with bread, wisely placed under the edge of the dustbin to keep the birds from getting it.

The cat was obviously homeless and in pretty bad shape.People said that the cat came to the right place. He's getting treated like a king. This was true.but as I watched I was also thinking about what the cat was doing for us.There was a lot of talk about what's wrong with prisons in America. We need more programs. We need more psychologists or treatment of various kinds. Some may even talk about making prisons more kind. But I think what we really need is a chance to practise our own kindness. Not receive it,but give it.After more than two decades here,I know kindness is not a value that's encouraged. It's often seen as a weakness.Instead, the culture encourages keeping your head down, minding your own business, and never letting yourself be weak.

The cat did my heart good to see the effect he had on me and the men here.By simply saying,”I need some help here”,he did something important for us.He needed us.And we needed to be needed.I believe we all do.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now m akes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have

learned to connect packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb. 52.What does the underlined phrase “that over-consumption” refer to?

A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.

A. Needless material is mostly recycled.

B. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

C. People like collecting recyclable waste.

D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.

I IMCKKD up the phone. Without so much as a hello ,a voice said: “What’s new? We have an eagle in the backyard.

It look me three second* lo recognize my nephew’s a voice. He was excited.“He’s sitting on top of a dead tree in the backyard .He’s been there a long lime. We’re tilling in the sunroom watching him."

His sight might be gone, but he sees plenty. From memory, mostly; from conventions around him; from listening to television and radio. He has an amazing memory. We took him into town with us when we were visiting his parents once. Our GPS wasn’ t working, so he gave us directions turn by turn, complete with landmarks, approximate distances and cautions on curves(拐弯处)in the road. He knew exactly where we were and got us to where wanted to go.

Second to his family, there are two things that have been important in this young man’s life: a guide dog and a job.

The guide dog gave him the confidence he didn’t know he had.

The job, “well” as his dad said: “Having a job makes him like everybody else. Now, he has something to come home and complain about at the end of the day."

I never have a conversation with my nephew without asking about his job in case lie wants to complain. But I know-and I know that he knows work is a gift. We were created to work. We were made to produce goods and services, to invent and solve problems. Work is what drags us out of bed in the morning.

Work gives us something to do and somewhere to go. If that doesn’t I sound like a big deal, talk to someone who’ s unemployed. It is working hard that enhances the lime that you don’t work, from kicking back and reading a book to watching an eagle in your backyard.

One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son and his girlfriend in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children and the younger children would do a wonderful job of accompanying (陪伴)the older ones. Later, I discovered that I was completely wrong.

I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out. I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.

It was, I should point out, after 10 p.m., when the two younger children should have been in bed, and when the two older children should have been answering

the phone. “I’ll give him a lesson, ” I said.I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10:30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.

Finally, in desperation(绝望), I called his girlfriend’s house. His girlfriend answered. “Yes,” she said brightly, “He’s right here.”

He came on the phone.I was not my usual calm, patient. After all, one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can’t trust modern teenagers. “Where are the children?” I said. He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just for ice cream and cake. Well, it turns out that I shouldn’t have believed it. It was only part of the truth.

The following Saturday evening we were at my parents’ home, celebrating my birthday. A “You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球)club. I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.” I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal. Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services

C 1 The Bible begins with the creation of the world. As a consequence(结果标识词,读到此,应该知道后面的主题句了), in traditional Western thought the world is assumed to have been created by God. 后面是具体解释了,可以略读)The Earth is associated with whatever is impermanent, imperfect, bodily and sinful. Heaven is the sphere of the permanent, perfect, spiritual and holy.(概念或中心句+具体解释的模式是绝大部分英语论说文的展开模式,关键是中心句的辨认。 Heaven) 2 Traditional Chinese thought has no place for the idea of a creation(本句为论点,从上文的西方思想到本段的中国思想,明显是比较). What exists has always existed and shall always do so(always重复,突出中国思想的特色).Accordingly (语篇标识词,此句是照应论点句。这种模式:论点+论据+总结照应,也是很常见的)there is no concept of necessary “improvement”or “correction”of the creation through such means as a Last Judgment. 3 Things are as they are simply because that is the way they are(从because可见这是承接上文,具体解释中国思想了,可扫读一下第4段的首句确定). The natural principle of order, common to all that exists, is called the Way (dao)(新的概念the Way的提出,必然后面要具体解释,这是铁定规律). The Way is not some sort of law or pattern that God or prophets (先知) forced on what exists. It reveals itself in the

A typical child plays many roles, such as friend, neighbor, son or daughter. Simply reminding children of that fact can lead to better problem-solving and more flexible thinking, according to new research from Duke University. Better problem-solving was just one positive finding of the study, said lead author Sarah Gaither, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. After thinking about their own various identities, children also showed more flexible thinking about race and other social groupings—a behavior that could be valuable in an increasingly diverse society. In a series of experiments, Gaither and her colleagues looked at 196 children, ages 6 and 7. In an experiment, one group of children was reminded that they had various identities, such as son, daughter, reader or helper. A second group of children was reminded of their multiple physical attributes, such as a mouth, arms and legs. All the children then needed to handle a few tasks Children who were reminded of their various identities showed stronger problem-solving and creative thinking skills. When shown pictures of a bear staring at honey-filled beehive(蜂窝)high up in a tree, these children had more creative ideas for how the bear might get the honey, such as turning over a bowl so that it became a stool(凳子). In other words, they saw a new use for the bowl. Children who were reminded of their multiple roles also showed more flexible thinking about social groupings. When asked to categorize different photos of faces, they suggested many ways to Spso. They identified smiling faces such as unsmiling ones, and old and young faces. The other children, meanwhile, primarily grouped people's faces by race and gender(性别). The-study suggests ways to promote flexible thinking for the young, which could be especially valuable for teachers." Gaither said. "We have this tendency in our society to only think about ourselves in connection with one important group at a time," Gaither said. "When kids think that they have various identities, they show greater abilities." (1)What are all the kids asked to do in the experiments? A.Play different kinds of roles. B.Remind others of their roles. C.Approach several tasks. D.Classify a group of tasks. (2)How does the author mainly clarify the conclusions of the study in paragraph 4? A.By giving examples. B.By using experts' words. C.By listing a few figures. D.By showing cause and effect. (3)What can we learn from Sarah Gaither's words? A.Improving 5 kids flexible thinking ability is important teaching. B.Kids tend to behave selflessly after thinking about their roles. C.Kids' creative thinking ability is easy to discover and develop.
