Sleep is something we all do. But some people need to sleep more than others. Babies sleep most of the time. Children in school sleep about ten to twelve hours a night. Most adults sleep only seven or eight hours. But babies, children, and adults-all of us need to have our sleep.
All parts of our bodies have to rest after they work. Our arms need a rest after we lift heavy things. When we are awake, they help us pay attention to the world around us. We can sit quite still and rest our arms and legs. But our brains aren?t resting. They go right on thinking as long as we are awake.
Our brains slow down a bit when we sleep and dream. But even as we sleep our brains are doing some work. Instead of thinking wide-awake thoughts, our brains make up dreams. Some dreams are very pleasing. Some are not. Most of the time we forget them when we wake up.
Scientists have tried to find out what would happen if people were not allowed to sleep and to dream. They asked some people not to go to bed. The people stayed up all night and all the next day. They stayed up the next night too, and the day after. The people became very sleepy. They tried to read but could not follow the words. They played games, but they made mistakes. They forgot things. It was hard for their tired brains to work. The people grew rude and mean. They became angry with their friends. Finally they were too tired to stand up. When they sat down, they fell asleep.
Scientists have found that if people are not allowed to sleep and to dream, they act strangely. No one knows quite why sleep is so good for us. But we do know that we beed it to stay well.

In a recent survey of high school students in the United States, 74 per cent admitted that they had copied, used forbidden notes or helped someone else cheat on a test. Seventy–two per cent acknowledged at least one incident of serious cheating on a written assignment.
In a survey of 2,200 students at 21 colleges conducted two years ago, one third of the students admitted to
an incident of serious test cheating; about half admitted to cheating on written assignments. Research shows that the number of students engaging(使忙于) in the most serious forms of test cheating has doubled since the 1960s in high school and college.
Students place the blame for this phenomenon(现象) on society and people in positions of authority(权利). Consider the view of this high school junior from Massachusetts: “To be successful in the world today people must cut corners, cheat, and back stab(伤害). Everybody cheats. Just not everybody gets caught.”
The view of a student at one of America?s most prestigious(有名望的) universities is even more telling, “In the real world, there are few rules and people cheat all of the time. It is a very competitive(竞争的) world, and when you are in a very competitive environment, you do whatever.”
While students have cheated for generations(世代), the ease with which they are able to justify their behavior by blaming it on others is a more recent and worrisome(令人担忧的) phenomenon. It?s even easier when they see teachers and administrators(管理者) themselves accused of cheating, for example those charged with improperly administering(管理，实施) standardized(标准化的) math and reading tests in order to boost(提高) scores.
According to the confusion(混乱，困惑), what students and teachers view as cheating often differs. Nowhere is this more confusing with the Internet. Some students view anything on the Internet as public information and feel free to save texts from a website and “paste” it into an assignment（分配，任务）without citing(引用) the source. Even when it comes to understanding the Internet, and they see little risk in plagiarizing(抄袭).
