Men sometimes say: “We are better and cleverer than women. Women never invent things. We do.” It is true that men have invented a lot of useful things: the machines, rockets, and guns, too. But scientists now agree that women invented one very important thing. It has changed history.

At the very beginning, men went out every day. Sometimes they killed animals, sometimes animals killed them. Life was difficult and dangerous. Women had to go out everyday, too. They collected roots, fruits and grasses. Then, one day, more than 10,000 years ago, a woman dropped some grass seeds. She dropped them near her home in the Middle East. They grew and the first wheat was born.

The idea grew, too. Women planted roots and fruit trees. Then they could stay at home and look after their children and the animals. Women like baby animals.

Scientists think that women kept the first domestic animals: dogs, cows, sheep and goats. That idea grew, too. Then their husbands did not have to go hunting for meat. They stayed at home. They built villages and cities. Civilization began. Men began civilization after women invented agriculture.

Directions: Listen to the following passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write “T” for true, “F” for false.

When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reasons why people keep a dog have changes. In the old days, people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks by other animals. And later they came to realize that a dog was not only hunting, the dogs

would not eat what was caught without permission. But now people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has not friends to play with. For young husband and wife, a dog is their child when they have no children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.

F 2. In the past, people kept dogs only for protection.

Desks in any college classrooms are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see the teacher instead of their classmates. Everything important obviously comes from the teacher. But actually, the teacher can correct this situation and create space that encourages interaction among students. The goal should be for everyone to be about to see everyone else.

Arrangement of the classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises. Besides, the fixed seats are also helpful for a teacher to remember students? names and faces. Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem. Part Four Short Passage

I.Study the following before listening.

psychologist n. 心理学家dull adj.迟钝的

silly adj. 愚蠢的smart adj.聪明的

II.Listen to the passage and choose the best answer to the following questions you hear.

What makes one person smarter than another? This question is very old and the answers to it are still not clear.

Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull. Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very helpful things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”

Questions:

1.What is the main idea of the passage? (A)

2.What is the question mentioned in the passage? (A)

3.According to the passage, who play an important role in the child?s

growing-up? (A)

4.What should the parents do when they play with their children? (B)

5.What should the parents say to their children? (B)

Part Five Spot Dictation

Directions: Listen to the following passage twice, and fill in the blanks with the missing words.

Americans do not always know what to call one another. When you talk to a person, title and last name express (1) respect to someone you don?t know, to someone whose (2) position is higher than yours, to a much old person, and, in general, in (3) formal situations. First name expresses (4) friendship for family, children, and within a group of friends. For instance, all the members of a club will probably use first names, even if their ages and positions are very (5) different.

What do people do about names at (6) university? Students use first names with one another. (7) Professors usually use first names among themselves too. Most instructors call (8) undergraduate students by their first name and call teaching (9) assistants “Mr.” or “Ms.” and last name. Graduate students are often not sure what to call their professors and they listen to other students to see what is (10) appropriate. Part Six Fun Time

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a MP3 to place in his sack, a strange voice echoed from the dark, saying “Jesus is watching you.”

The thief nearly jumped out of his skin, clicking his flashlight off and froze. When he heard nothing more, he clicked the light back on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he was trying to put a cell phone into his sack, clear as a bell, he heard, “Jesus is watching you.” Frightened, he shone his light around to look for the source of the voice. In the corner of the room, he saw a parrot.

“Did you say that?” he asked.

“Yep,” the parrot confessed, “I?m just trying to warn you.”

The burglar relaxed. “Warn me, huh? Who are you?”

“Moses,” replied the bird.

“Moses??!!” the burglar laughed. “What kind of stupid people would name a parrot Moses?”

“Probably the same kind of people that would name a rottweiler Jesus,” the bird answered.

Part Four Short Passage

I.Study the following before listening.

headquarters n. 总公司,总部Seattle n.西雅图

order n.订购,订单credit n.信用

II.Listen to the passage and choose the best answer to the following questions you hear.

In 1995, a small company began selling books from its headquarters in the western city of Seattle, Washington. It was an unusual company. It did not have a store you could visit. The only way you could buy a book from the company was to use a computer linked with the Internet.

It was one of the first businesses to offer products for sale by using the Internet. The company made it easy to buy almost any book you wanted. You used your computer to link with the company so you could read about many different books. When you found the book you wanted, you place an order and typed the number of your credit card to pay for it. A worker at the company placed the book in a box and usually mailed it to you the next day. It was really very simple. Business experts say buying products using the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. They say buying on the Internet has increased as much as thirty-six percent over last year. Experts say people have spent almost ten-thousand-million dollars buying products on the Internet during the first nine months of this year.

Questions:

1.When did the small company begin its business? (C)

2.Why was this small company unusual? (B)

3.According to the passage, how did you pay the bill when you bought books

on the Internet? (A)

4.How much had been spent on buying products on the Internet? (C)

5.What do you learn from the passage? (D)

Part Five Spot Dictation

Directions: Listen to the following passage twice, and fill in the blanks with the missing words.

Women in China and many other countries (1) participate in a growing number of sports. But this has not always been the case. In fact, women were not as (2) active as men. Part of their explanation for this was that women didn?t have time. Many women had to cook and (3) care for children so they didn?t have time. A second reason was that the woman?s (4) image appears too (5) delicate and even sick to be (6) involved in any sports.

But great changes have taken place and the (7) general view of women has changed (8) gradually. People do not think it is unlady-like for a woman to (9) compete in sports. Many women now take part in sports and games and those who win in the sports (10)

activities are highly regarded. This development is partly the result of a change of women in the today?s world.

Part Four

Short Passage

We will explain some sayings about birds. For example, if something is “for the birds”, it is worthless or not very interesting. Someone who “eats like a bird” eats very little. And “a bird?s eye view” is a general look at an area from above. Have you ever observed that “birds of a feather flock together”? In other words, people who are similar become friends or do things together. There is some good advice. “A bird in a hand is worth two in a bush.” This means you should not risk losing something you have by trying to get more of something you do not have. Sometimes, I can do two things by making only one action. This is called “killing two birds with one stone”. But I would never really kill any birds. I love all kinds of animals. This is “a real

Janet, there's something Kate and I wanted to discuss with you. Some people in college are organizing charity events this term. We've decided to get involved. Janet: Raising money for charity Right. Mark: That's why we're telling you about it. So that's decided then. Let's make a list of things we need to do. Kate: I'll do that. One of the first things we should do is choose the charity. Mark: Yes. And choose a day for the event. And we need to design the sponsorship form. I've got one here. Kate: That looks fine, but we must change the wording. Who wants to do that Mark: I'll do that. What have we got so far Kate: Choose a charity. Also a day for the event. Change the wording on the sponsorship form... Um ...

Unit 6-Conversation 1 Janet: What are you reading, Kate Kate:Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Do you know it Janet: I've heard of it, yes, but I've never read it. It's a 19th century children's story, isn't it K a te: That's right. It's very famous. It's set in Oxford. It starts with this young girl sitting on a river bank. The interesting thing is, the author, Lewis Carroll, he was an Oxford professor and he used to have tea with the girl's family on this river bank. Ja net: Oh, that's fascinating! I'll put it into my diary. Kate: Is that what you're writing I know you've been keeping a diary all the year. Janet: It's been a great year. I've had such a good time — so lucky to have Mark and Kate as friends. Feel I've been doing well with work. Much happier about asking questions in tutorials. Janet: My screen's gone dark. Mark: You're using the battery, remember. It's run out, obviously. Janet: It can't be the battery. It's still charged. Oh no it's still black. Oh dear, I hope it's nothing serious. I haven't backed anything up recently. Kate: That's not like you, Janet. Janet:I know, but I lost my memory stick. I really should have backed things up. How stupid of me not to do that! Supposing I've lost everything! Mark: Let me take a look. The power is still on. And also the operating system still seems to be working ... I think it has to be the graphics card ... But maybe that's not the problem ... Janet: If only I'd backed things up! Kate: Relax, Janet! We'll take it to the computer shop this afternoon. I'm sure it'll be OK. Janet: I hope so. Unit 6-Conversation 2 Janet: Tell me about Alice in Wonderland. Kate: I tell you what, I'll read it to you. Kate: Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and having nothing to do: Once or twice, she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversation" So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid) ... Janet: Kate, Mark, where are you going You've got my laptop! Kate: It's all right, Janet, we're taking it to the computer shop. We'll be back soon. Mark: It's not like Janet to forget to back up her work. Kate: She should have been more careful. Janet: It was stupid of me, I know! Stupid, stupid! Janet: Oh! It was a dream! What a relief! Kate: You were talking in your sleep. Janet: What was I saying Kate: "Stupid, stupid." M ark: I've sorted out your computer. Janet: Have you Oh, thank goodness! What was the problem Mark:It was the graphics card, as I predicted ... Janet: Is that what it was! I'm so relieved! Thanks, Mark. Kate: He's great, isn't he Janet: Yes. So are you, Kate. Kate: You're such a good friend. Unit 6-Outside view Computers are a very important part of our lives. They tell us about delays to transport. They drive trains, analyze evidence and control buildings. Did you know that 60 per cent of homes in Britain have got a PC (a personal computer) For many young people, playing computer games is their favorite way of spending spare time. Computers are a very important part of most areas of life in Britain-libraries, the police and in school. But they are becoming more important in our homes as well. They’ll even control the way we live-in “smart homes” or computer-controlled houses. The smart home is now a real possibility. It will become very common. A central computer will adjust the temperature, act as a burglar alarm and switch on lights, ready for you to come back home. And of course you will be able to give new instructions to the computer from your mobile phone. So if your plans change, your home will react to match. Many homes have got lots of televisions and several computers. The smart home will provide TV and Internet sockets in every room, so you’ll be able to do what you want whenever you want. If the temperature outside changes, the smart home will adjust the temperature levels inside. The computer will also close the blinds when it gets dark or to stop so much sun from entering a room. And if you want to eat when you get home, the computer will turn the oven on for you! Are computers taking over our lives In a survey, 44 per cent of young people between 11 and 16 said their PC was a trusted friend. Twenty per cent said they were happier at their computer than spending time with family or friends. Another survey found that people in Britain spend so much time on the phone, texting and reading emails that they no longer have time for conversation. What do you think about that Unit 6-Listening in

Unit 1 Starting out Outside view Julie My name's Julie Dearden, and I'm the Director of International Programmes here at Hertford College. Eugene My name's Eugene Berger, I studied here in Oxford for four years er, studying modern languages at Somerville College. Julie Oh, there are many Oxford traditions. Oxford is a very old university, the oldest English-speaking university in the, in the world. And so there are many traditions which are associated with the colleges, with the times of the year, and with sport, and with eating, for example. Eugene Each college is very different um, from um, the others, and it has its own character. Some colleges are very conservative, and some are much more liberal and have a tradition of um, kind of liberal politics. But there are also some specific traditions. Julie Formal Hall is when we all eat together here in college, the professors and the students. Usually it takes places at seven o'clock in the evening, and the professors sit on high table which is the table over here, and the students sit on common table, which are the tables here. But everybody eats together. It's a very beautiful evening because there are, there's a special meal and we eat by candlelight. Eugene I think er, the traditions that make Oxford so unique are firstly the Oxford Union and er, secondly, May Day. The Oxford Union being a debating society where speakers come from all around the world to address the students and even allow themselves to be questioned by the students, making it a very interesting forum. Julie My favourite is er, May Day. And May Day is the first day of May, and we have a tradition called May Morning, and on May Morning everybody gets up very early and the students have a celebration. There is a choir which sings on top of the tower at Magdalen College and all the people of the town and all the students go to listen to the singing. So it's very nice. Eugene The tradition that er, was most important to me was probably Summer Eights. I was a rower. And Summer Eights is a rowing competition, held in May in the summer term. And in this competition, each college is trying to improve its place which it won the previous year and gradually work its way up the river. Julie When the students take exams, they must go to a special building and it's called Examination Schools. And also they must wear a special uniform, so they wear E.gown like mine, a black gown, and they wear a white shirt, arid the men wear a white tie and black trousers. The women wear a white shirt and a black skirt or black trousers. And they must wear this uniform, which has a Latin name - sub fuse — and they must wear this uniform in order to take their examinations. Eugene I think the Oxford traditions lend character to the place and it's such an old institution, it should have traditions, but they can be very inconvenient. For example, sub fuse. This is the uniform that we are required according to the university rules, to wear. Julie They also wear flowers in their buttonholes, and those flowers are carnations. And they wear different colours, the students wear different coloured flowers for different examinations. So when you take your first exam you wear a white flower, and when you take your second exam you wear a pink flower, and when you take your final examination you wear a red carnation. Eugene So we have to dress up in a full black suit, starched collar, white bow tie and carry a mortarboard. And to write an exam in the summer heat whilst wearing all that which you're not allowed to take off is um, uncomfortable. Julie I really like the Oxford traditions, I think it's part of our history, and part of um, being a student or a teacher here at Oxford University. Listening in Passage 1 Interviewer Can you tell me something about the Ivy League? You're a professor at Harvard, is that right?
