Only Beijing and Shanghai achieved last year's nitrogen oxides (氮氧化物) emission reduction goals. China faces tough challenges to control major air pollutants, according to a government official. More nitrogen oxides were emitted despite reduction plans. Carbon consumption increased 320m tons in 2011 and more than 18m cars added to China's traffic last year. The number of hazy days accounted for 30-50% of the year in cities in areas including the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regions.

The US Postal Service (USPS) is banning international shipments of electronics with lithium batteries (锂电池) such as smartphones, laptops and iPads, because of the risk of fire, foreign media reported. The USPS says it may change the ban on Jan 1, 2013 to allow electronic products with certain quantities of lithium batteries internationally.

I decided to go to college on the other side of the country from where my family lives. I also play sport, so never have much time to come home for a visit. A few weeks before Mother's Day last year, I got into a big fight with my parents about something relatively minor. It left us all feeling upset.

Three years ago on Mother's Day, I stopped at a flower shop to buy some flowers to be delivered to my mother who lived 200 miles away. As I got out of my car I noticed a young girl sitting on the curb (路边) sobbing. I asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have 75 cents, and a rose costs $2." I smiled and said, "Come on in with me."

Winter is the season for ice skating. Spectators are often overwhelmed by skaters speeding on the ice and their occasional jumps. Their slender bodies spin in the air, radiating charm. Professional figure skaters often demonstrate the beauty of the sport at its extremes, especially for pairs when a man and a woman dance to the melodies like a pair of butterflies. Comparable to heavenly lovers, they follow each other closely and move in harmony. But sometimes, such companionship does not last forever in reality. Zhang Dan, a Chinese figure skater, announced Monday the end of her 14-year partnership with Zhang Hao in the sport. Their breaking up was surely sad news to many fans.

Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao first joined hands in Beijing in the 1998 World Junior Figure Skating Championships (WJFSC). Back then, they were 12 and 13 years old respectively. At an innocent age, the two probably could not expect to spend their 14-year most youthful time together on the ice rink. They began to show potential in the 2nd year of becoming partners. Their first gold medal was from the WJFSC in 2001. Then, Dan and Hao gradually became the 3rd best pair in the national team after Shen Xue/Zhao Hongbo and Pang Qing/Tong Jian.

The pair of butterflies on ice welcomed the moment to
break out of their cocoons in the pair figure skating finals in the 2006 Winter Olympics at Torino. But the transformation was hindered by an accident. As the music of "Offspring of the Dragon" started, the two graced the ice rink with beautiful dance moves. When spectators were expecting the first climax, the melodies snapped. Hao had thrown Dan out into the air. Dan finished 4 full turns, but she fell heavily on the ice while landing. Almost everybody thought they would quit. Minutes later, Zhang Dan returned to the rink after wiping tears off her face.The couple eventually completed their performance. When the last melody faded away, applause broke out and reverberated over the rink for a long time. It was the best reward for their unbending will.
