Section B: Read the following story. For Questions 55 to 59, put the paragraphs marked A, B, C, D and E in the correct order. Then put the letters in the spaces provided on the Answer Sheet. (5 points)

A. At that moment, Tiny suddenly appeared. The dog jumped up and bit one of the bear’s legs. The bear turned around. Then, the dog bit him on the other leg, barked and ran away. The bear turned around again. After biting the bear three more times, Tiny ran towards the trees. The bear forgot about Petre and began to chase the dog.

B. Petre Preda, a shepherd, was looking after his sheep in the mountains in the east of Romania. He had a little dog with him: a Pekinese called Tiny, which was a present from Petre’s wife. Petre

and Tiny were walking on the edge of a forest when an enormous bear suddenly came out of the trees.

C. After a while, the shepherd woke up. Just then, one of his sheep came out of the trees. A few seconds later, another sheep arrived. Finally, all the sheep were out of the forest and Tiny was walking behind the last one. Afterwards, Petre renamed his dog. ―Tiny‖ is now called ―Bear‖.

D. Petre watched as the dog and the bear ran into the forest. His sheep were lost, his leg was broken, and now the bear was going to eat his dog before returning for him. He tried to stand up but fell again and hit his head. Everything was dark.

E. The first thing that happened was that the sheep ran into the forest and the dog chased after them. Petre was terrified and ran in the other direction but the bear chased after him. At first, the shepherd was faster, but then he fell on a rock and broke his leg. He lay on the ground in pain, looked up at the huge bear and thought: ―This is the end. I’m going to die.‖

55.____ 56. ____ 57. ____ 58. ____ 59. ____

Section C:In this section, you will have to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on the Answer Sheet. For questions 60—64, mark T (for TRUE) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; F (for FALSE) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;(5 points)

Questions 60 to 64 are based on the following passage.

Most adults learning English are not doing so for the first time in their lives. Many of them have already learnt some English at school, possible in quite a ―traditional‖way, concentrating on grammar and structures, and not speaking very much. When they go back to the language classroom after several years away from it, many are surprised by the different methods that are used, and find it hard to adapt to them: they don’t like working in pairs or groups, they want to listen to the teacher, they want to be corrected all the time, and so on. Another problem is that some adult learners have very unrealistic expectations. They imagine that they will be able to communicate effectively in English in a very short time, and when this does not happen, they lose interest and sometimes give up altogether. Many learners also reach a ―plateau‖ after a year or two: they feel they are not getting any better or making any progress at all, and become extremely frustrated. A further problem is that adults often become children again in the classroom: they allow the teacher to make all the decisions about how and what they learn. In fact, many people actually like to be told what to do in the classroom, even though they would object very strongly to such control outside the classroom.

Statements:

( ) 60. Most adults are learning English for the first time.

( ) 61. Most adults haven’t learnt English at school.

( ) 62. Some learners underestimate the time it will take.

( ) 63. Learning English can sometimes be frustrating.

( ) 64. People don’t always like to be told what to do outside the classroom.

66. Wealthy Brazilians, exasperated by the phenomenal increase in crimes committed by their poorer compatriots, have taken to keeping lions to guard their exclusive homes. In one expensive apartment block, after a lion virtually ate a burglar alive, break-ins dropped from fifteen incidents a month to none.

67. William Mitcheson of Atlanta, Georgia, is the proprietor of America’s only Ant Circus. His traveling exhibition of trained insects features such attractions as ant trapeze artists and tightrope walkers, and ants that dance and ride magnifying glasses. Mitcheson, who spends several months training each performer, says the most difficult thing is to dress them in their clown costumes without squashing them.

68. In Annapolis, Maryland, a man was charged with stealing a car telephone. After discovering it was missing, the owner, Paula Thistle, dialed the number of the stolen phone, told the man who answered that she was lonely, and organised a date - but omitted to tell him that she would be chaperoned by the police, who arrested him when he showed up.

69. Benjamin Carnesoltas, 36, was convicted of slashing a prison officer at Lee’s Summit, Missouri, with a razor blade. The fact that the weapon was not found did not deter the jury, to whom it was explained that Carnesoltas, a circus performer who could swallow and regurgitate objects at will, had gulped it down.

Section E: Read the passage carefully, for questions 70 to 74, answer them in a maximum

of 10 words. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet.

Questions 70 to 74 are based on the following passage.

SELLING DREAMS

Many of us, it seems, have two very different careers. There is our normal job and there is the job we dream about but never do. A recent survey found over 30% of UK office workers wanted to do something else for a living. Now, a new company, Vocation Vacations, is offering people a chance to try their dream jobs.

The company started in the US in January 2004. People choose a profession from a list of ―dream jobs‖ on its website (e.g. zoo keeper). For two or three days, a computer programmer or lawyer can go to a zoo and work there. An expert helps them. ―You’re a regular employee for the day,‖says Brian Kurth, who runs the holiday company. Holidays cost from about $400 to manage a small hotel to about $2,000 for a weekend as a zoo keeper.

―Many business people are too nervous to leave their jobs,‖says Kurth: ―This way, they don’t need to resign. People should see the holidays as a ―first test‖, advises Kurth. ―And if they like their ordinary jobs more afterwards,‖ he says, ―that’s a success, too! ‖

British travel agencies say more and more men in their 30’s are buying working holidays. Selling dreams is good business.

70. A recent survey found wanted to make a living by doing something else.

71. When did the holiday company start?

72. Who’s the company manager?

73. How much do the holidays cost as a zoo keeper?

74. How do many business people feel about leaving their jobs?

Section F: In this section, there is one passage followed by a summary. For Question 75, please choose the picture that goes with the text. For Questions 76 to 80, please read the passage carefully and complete the summary with a maximum of three words from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet. (10 points) Questions 75 to 80 are based on the following passage.

My favourite thing

Each week, our readers describe a possession they cannot live without. This week, Tiffany Watts from Bedford describes her handbag. My favourite possession is a black leather handbag. It’s special because it was a present from my boyfriend, Justin. He gave it to me when I got my first job as a flight attendant. I think it cost him a lot of money, but that’s not the reason why I like it! The first thing you notice about it is that it’s quite large for a handbag - too large, really. It’s very plain and I didn’t like it at first. But because it’s plain black, it goes with almost all my clothes. What’s more, it’s made of very high quality leather and it still looks good because it doesn’t fall over when you put it down. The handle is big and strong, too, and you can put your arm through it.

It is the fact that you don’t have to carry the bag in your hand all the time.

I put all my most important things in my bag because I know I’ll never lose it. There’s my phone, of course, and my keys, my purse and my make-up. I keep a photo of Justin there, as well. I take it with me everywhere I go. And when I’m at home, it ―lives‖ on the coffee table so I always know where everything is. The only problem with my bag is that there are no pockets or zips inside, so it sometimes takes me a long time to find things. People always laugh because I can never find my phone.

75. Which picture goes with the text?

A. B. C.

Summary:

The writer likes her black handbag best. It is (76)_____________ because it was given by her boyfriend as a (77) _____________ . It is true that her boyfriend spent a lot of money on the handbag, but that’s not the reason why she likes it. (78) _____________ , she didn’t like it because it is too large and very plain. However, just because of its plain black, it goes with almost all her clothes. (79) _____________ , its leather quality is very good, and also, it has a solid bottom and the handle is so big and strong that you don’t have to carry the bag always in your hand. She put all her most important things in her bag, such as her phone, her keys, her purse, her make-up and her boyfriend’s photo (80) _____________. The only problem is there are no pockets or zips inside.

Part VI Translation (15 minutes, 20 points)

Section A:Translate the underlined sentences of the following passage into Chinese. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet. (10 points)

(91) The stress of returning to work on a Monday morning can trigger a dangerous increase in blood pressure, according to a study. The Tokyo Women’s Medical University study shows blood pressure readings are higher than at any other time of the week. (92) It may explain why deaths from heart attacks and strokes tend to peak on a Monday morning. There are 20% more heart attacks on Mondays than on any other day. (93) Heart disease is Britain’s biggest killer. Around 270,000 people suffer a heart attack every year and nearly one in three die before they even reach hospital. High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects one in five people in the UK and is a major

risk factor for heart disease. The higher it climbs, the greater the force exerted by blood on the walls of the arteries when the heart beats. To see how it changed over the course of a week, researchers from Tokyo Women’s Medical University in Japan, fitted 175 men and women with a device that would measure their blood pressure round-the-clock. A week later the recruits returned the devices so that researchers could assess how blood pressure had changed. (94) The results, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, showed a surge in readings in those getting ready to go back to work on a Monday morning. Volunteers who stayed asleep did not experience an increase, which suggests work-related stress is most likely to blame. (95) ―Most people are free of the mental and physical burdens of work on a Sunday and experience a more stressful change from weekend leisure activities to work activities on Mondays,‖ said Dr Murakami, who led the research. ―There was a distinct peak on Mondays in this study.‖Professor Keith Fox, from the cardiovascular research unit at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, told reporters an early morning rise in blood pressure is probably a normal part of the body’s 24-hour rhythm and unlikely to be a problem for healthy people. But he said: ―If somebody already has cardiovascular disease then it might just tip them over the edge and trigger a heart attack.‖

W: Well, yes. He made one or two harmful remarks this evening.

M: One or two? He’s always criticizing you these days! I don’t know how you can stand it!

W: Well, he’s been having a bit of trouble at work recently. So he’s quite stressed.

M: Quite stressed? That’s no excuse for being rude to his girlfriend, I don’t think. I think his behaviour is totally out of order.

W: Yeah, it’s getting me down a bit, I must say.

M: Well, you really mustn’t put up with it any longer, Sophie. You should tell him that if he can’t be nicer to you, you won’t go out with him any more.

I was already late because I went to the wrong airport terminal. At the check-in desk, I asked: ―Can I take this bag as hand luggage, please?‖ But they said ―Sorry, no, it’s too big.‖ When I got to passport control there was a long line of people waiting to show their passports. I asked a man, ―Excuse me, I wonder if I could get past? I’m terribly late.‖―So am I!‖ he said. At security, a security guard said: ―Take off your shoes and empty your pockets! ‖I was so late after that, I ran across the departure hall without my shoes on! When I got to the departure gate, the other passengers were still waiting to board. Great! But when I got on the plane, the same rude man from the line at passport control was in my seat! I showed him my seat number on my boarding card and said, ―I’d like to sit down, please.‖―Why don’t you find another seat?‖ he said. I asked him again, ―Could you move out of my seat, please?‖ He fastened his seat belt! Finally I asked the flight attendant to move him. When he got up, he hit his head on the overhead locker!

During the pause, read the question and the three choices marked A, B and C, and decide which is the best answer. 1. M: The school’s English club is having a party on Saturday night. Can you come? W: I would like to, but I work at a restaurant on weekends. 2. W: Michael, did you go to the lecture on the French Revolution last night? I have never heard such an interesting history lecture before. M: Yes, wasn’t it marvelous? I’ve heard that the lecturer is a self-taught man with no university education. 3. W: So, did you have a good trip back from Bangkok, Kenny? M: Yeah, not bad. The plane left on time for a change, but the stopover in Singapore was left an hour longer than scheduled, and then we took a long time to land ... Actually, I would walk out of customs two hours ago. W: En... , I thought you were only an hour late! 4. M: Now, I’m going to start off by asking you a difficult question. Why would you like to get this post? W: Well, first of all, I know your firm has a very good reputation. I’ve also heard that you offer good opportunities for promotion to the right person. 5. W: Now, I should have failed it yesterday, but it doesn’t seem to be here in “paid invoices” and that’s the right file. I don’t understand... it’s been paid. M: Ah, what about this envelope on your chair? W: Oh here it is! It’s in the right place but it’s attached to the receipt so I couldn’t see it. Section B In this section, you will hear two long conversations. Each conversation will be read only once. After each conversation, there will be a one-minute pause. During the pause, read the five questions, each with three choices marked A, B and C, and decide which is the best answer. Conversation One M: Mm..., where do you recommend I stay? What’s the Holiday Inn like? W: It’s nice there. It’s in the city centre and has all the usual business facilities. The service is the first class. M: Oh, good. So I’ll get a room there. Now, what’s the best way to get to the hotel from the airport? Should I take a taxi? W: Well, you can, but you don’t have to. The subway system is very good. M: Mm..., can you tell me something about business hours there? I mean, what time are the banks open? W: The banks? They open at half past eight and close at four thirty.

Directions: Suppose you are Li Ming. One of your roommates is getting addicted to smoking. You are going to write a letter, trying to persuade him to quit. Your letter should be persuasive.
