A

Break Your Bad Mood

Having one of those days or weeks--- when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster---often within a day or two.

Walk it off

Exercise is the most popular bad-mood buster. A person who's in a bad mood has low energy and high tension, taking a fast ten-minute walk, or doing some quick exercises can do wonders towards changing that bad mood.

Tune it out

Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tension go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive experiences we've had.

Give yourself a pep talk

Stop and listen to what's on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper---the pessimistic messages you've been giving yourself and then give optimistic answers. (“I still don't have a job.” vs “I have two interviews next week.”) Reduce your stress

Relaxation techniques are wonderful modifiers. These include deep breathing, stretching and visualizing, all of which sound complicated but aren't. One easy way to visualize: close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to be against distress is to make a to-do list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas, you realize you're not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.

Avoid things that won't improve your mood

TV may not help much. You need to increase your energy level and stimulate your mind-something that the TV show "Neighbors" won't do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. A better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(意大利面食), produce a calming effect on people who have a desire for them.

56. We learn from the text that it might help us to get rid of a bad mood ________

A. to do nothing about it

B. to take a long walk on the beach

C. to do some exercises with light music

D. to talk about it to neighbors

57. Why is it suggested that you close your eyes and picture the beach?

A. It is not complicated to do so.

B. It is an area which can be easily controlled.

C. It helps beat a bad mood.

D. It brings us a new technique.

58. TV may not improve your mood because ________.

A. it sometimes shows what happens around you

B. it keeps you sitting without moving

C. it reminds you of eating and drinking

D. it produces a calming effect

B

Many of us have heard of the saying: everything is possible if you can just believe. But few of us really know the power of faith and perseverance (坚定). South African swimmer Natalie Du Toit

embodies (体现) those virtues.

DuToit, 24, became the first swimmer to compete in both the Olympic Games and the Paralym-pics (残奥会) in Beijing. Although she finished 16th in the tough 10km marathon in the able-bodied Games, she has collected three golds in the Paralympics so far.

One of the most successful disabled athletes of all time, Natalie DuToit was already a promising swimmer when she lost her leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001, at just 17.

“ There are a lot of dark moments, ” DuToit said. “ There are some days when I cry. But I try to remember that better days are ahead. You just go on.”

Within a few months, she was back in the swimming pool. She still competes and still succeeds. The only difference is she has switched to longer events---from 200m and 400m individual medley to 800m and 1, 500m freestyle --- to make up for her loss of speed with only one leg. But she made no adjustment to her mental outlook.

“ Going out in the water, it feels as if there's nothing wrong with me. It doesn't matter if you look differe nt. You're still the same as everybody else because you have the same dream.”

She is the owner of many world records, and she also won gold when competing against able-bodied swimmers in the 1, 500m freestyle at the All Africa Games in 2007. _____________. It all lies in hard work and determination. “She is stubborn, which is good and bad,”said her coach Karoly Von Toros. “Good for the swimming, but bad for the coach.”

There is a poem that hangs on her wall that reads:

“The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goals.”

“The tragedy of life lies in not having goals to reach for.”

Still no answer.

“Where’s that boy gone? Tom!”

The old lady looked all around the room. She looked under the bed, but found only the cat.

“If I catch that boy, …” she murmured to herself.

She opened the door and looked out into the garden.

“Tom!” she shouted.

Then she heard a slight noise behind her. She turned round just in time to catch the boy as he came out of a cupboard.

“And what have you been doing in there?”

“Nothing,” said the boy.

“Nothing! Look at your hands and your mouth! What is that stuff?”

“I don’t know, Aunt.”

“Well, I know. It’s a jam. I’ve told you forty times that if you touched that jam, I’d skin you.

Give me that st ick.”

“Look out, Aunt! Look behind you!”

The old lady turned round and Tom was out of the door in a flash, over the garden fence and away.

“Damn that boy! Will I never learn? He’s always playing tricks on me. And he seems to know just now how f ar he can go, too. But I can’t take a stick to him. I really can’t. After all, he’s my dead sister’s boy. Ah well, he’ll play truant today and I’ll have to make him work tomorrow.”

At supper Aunt Polly tried to trick Tom into admitting that he hadn’t gone to school.

“It was rather hot today, wasn’t it, Tom?”

“Yes,” answered Tom.

“You didn’t have to open your shirt collar where I sewed it, then.”

Tom was confident, now. He opened his jacket. His collar was securely sewed.

“Oh Tom,” said Aunt Polly. “You’re a good boy really.”

She was sorry that she had been wrong about him.

“But Aunt,” came a voice. It was Sidney, Tom’s younger brother. “Didn’ t you sew Tom’s collar with white cotton? Look! Now it’s black.

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby. The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensit ive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression.

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

67. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?

A. The environment.

B. Mother’s sensitivity.

C. Their peers (同龄人)

D. Education before birth.

68. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?

A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born.

B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.

C. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.

D. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills.

69. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?

A. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.

B. The children of women who did not suffer from depression.

C. The children of depressed but caring mothers.

D. Children with high communication abilities.

70. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.

B. Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies’ intelligence.

C. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are rice or six months old.

D. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies.

Intense physical exercise is not the only way to better health. Studies show that walking several times a week can lower the risk of many diseases. They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss, arthritis (关节炎), and depression. Walking also can help you lose weight.

Fast walking is good for the heart. It lowers the blood pressure. It raises the amount of good cholesterol(胆固醇) in the blood. Researchers say walking can sharply reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack.

Studies have also shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can delay and possibly prevent the development of diabetes. People who are overweight have an especially high risk to develop this disease.

Walking strengthens the muscles and builds up the bones that they are attached to. Studies show that walking could decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis Walking can also help ease the pain of arthritis in areas where bones are joined. This is because walking strengthens the muscles around the bones.

Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for people who are starting an exercise program for the first time and for older people.

A walking program is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and good shoes. There are shoes that are designed especially for lots of walking.

How fast should you walk? For the best effect, doctors say you should walk fast enough to cause you to breathe hard. Yet you should still be able to talk. Let your arms move freely while you walk.

There are no rules to starting a walking program. You might walk short distances. Or you might walk up hills to strengthen your leg muscles. Health experts say you can gain the most from a walking program if you walk at about five kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day. You should do this about five times a week.

Stress is an inevitable part in our normal life. It may result from the small things, such as having too many things to do in a limited time, others’ comment, and being unable to get along with friends. Besides, the great burden of study, failure in exams as well as parents and teachers’ expectation also leave us under great pressure.

On one hand, stress can inspire our potential so that we can grasp the opportunity to finish the challenging work. On the other hand, too much stress can affect our physical and mental well-being. If the stress lasts a long time, it may cause headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure,

even heart disease. It also keeps us in depression.

When stress does occur, it's important to recognize and deal with it. A large number of physical activities can reduce anxiety. Sharing our stress with others can be greatly helpful.
