United States special forces in Afghanistan are being given two weeks to leave the strategically important province of Wardak. The spokesman for the Afghan president Hamid Karzai said the decision had been taken after alleged abuses by Afghans working with American special forces. Karen Allan reports.
President Karzai's spokesman said US special forces would be expelled from the strategically significant province of Wardak within the next two weeks. It comes amid allegations that Afghan Units, which the government says are working and paid for by the US teams, are linked to allegations of torture and disappearances. A preliminary investigation also blame them for beheading a university student in the province. Wardak has been the focus of recent counterinsurgency operations and seen as a gateway for the Taliban to target Kabul. A spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan said they take all allegations of misconduct seriously.
Eleven African countries have signed an agreements aimed at ending the two-decade insurgency in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The deal stipulates that the 11 signatories would not interfere in each other's internal affairs. An accusation often made against Rwanda and Uganda over their backing of Congolese rebel groups. The United Nations mediated deal will also see a 2,500-strong intervention brigade deployed to the Eastern DRC.
A leading opposition figure in Egypt has called on President Morsi not to go ahead with parliamentary elections in April. In an interview with the BBC, Mohammed EIBaradei said that to do so would risk bringing total chaos and instability to a society that was already paralyzed. “We need to send the message loud and clear to the people here, to the people outside of Egypt that this is not a democracy, that we have not participated the uprising two years ago to end up with, you know, recycling of the Mubarak regime when tortures are still there, when abduction is still there, when lack of social justice and basic needs. So I took the decision that we would not participate in a sham election.
Polling stations have closed in Italy at the end of the first day of what's been seen as the country's most important parliamentary election for a generation. There'll be a second and final day of voting on Monday. Gavin Hewitt reports.
The front runner is the center-left candidate Pier Luigi Bersani who will make growth rather than austerity his priority. Europe's leaders hoped he can form a coalition with Mario Monti, the former unelected Prime Minister and a man credited with restoring some stability to Italy's government. Silvio Burlisconi may not win, but if he does win in the senate may end up with influence. Much attention will focus on Beppe Grillo, a comedian who is attracting a large protest vote, potentially making it very difficult to form a credible administration.

The center-right candidate Nicos Anastasiades has won the presidential election in Cyprus with one of the widest margins in 30 years. The conservative leader took more than 57% of the vote to secure a comfortable win over his left-wing rival Stavros Malas. The most pressing task facing the new president will be to negotiate a 17bn Euro bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
The Revolutionary Guard in Iran has said it downed one of its own unmanned aircraft as part of a training drill rather than a foreign drone as it had previously suggested. A spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard have said on Saturday that its electronic warfare unit had forced a foreign drone to land after taking control of its navigation system.
The mother of the South African fashion model Reeva Steenkamp who was shot dead by her boyfriend, the athlete Oscar Pistorius has spoken of the moment that she learned her daughter was dead. Interviewed by a South African current affairs program Carte Blanche on the Imminent network, June Steenkamp said a man who said he was calling from a police station told her the news.
“This is weird. He said this's been an accident and she's been shot. And I said all I want to know now. She's alive or she is dead. Then the man said he was with the police and he said I'm sorry to have to tell you, but I don't want you to go out reading the paper. She's dead. "
And finally the remote Algerian gas plant at the centre of the deadly hostage-taking last month has resumed production. The Tiguentourine plant had been closed since the attack by al Qaeda linked gunmen who took hundreds of local and dozens of foreign workers hostage. The Algerian army ended the siege by storming the complex, but not before 29 insurgents and at least 37 foreign workers were killed.

Initial results fr om Italy?s general elections suggest that there is no clear winner. From Rome, here is Gavin Hewitt.
After early results from the Italian election, the country appears to be heading for political deadlock. Whilst the center-left under Pier Luigi Bersani seems to be heading for victory in
the Lower House, Silvio Berlusconi and his allies are performing strongly in the Senate. It may get him influence but he won?t be returning to power. To complicate matters further, the protest movement led by the comedian Beppe Grillo is showing huge gains.
The French foreign minister Laurent Fabius has described images posted online of seven members of a French family kidnapped in Cameroon last week as shocking. The video which appeared on YouTube shows the family including four children surrounded by masked men who say they belong to the Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram. Will Ross reports
In the three-and-a-half-minute video, one of the male hostages reads from a piece of paper and says the group that?s holding them is Jama?atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda?awati wal-Jihad, this is the official name for the Nigerian Islamist militant group popularly known as Boko Haram. The hostage says the group is calling for the release of its members detained in Cameroon and its women being held in Nigeria. The French news agency says a source closed to the kidnapped family has confirmed the video does show the seven French nationals taken hostage in Cameroon last Tuesday.
European Union agriculture ministers have called for more DNA testing of meat across Europe as yet another company was caught up in the selling of beef contaminated by horseflesh. Their announcement followed the recall by the Swedish retailer IKEA of its meatballs after tests showed traces of horsemeat in one batch. From Brussels, Christian Fraser reports.
A great number of states are in favor of country or region labeling for process food. The commission agreed tonight to fasttrack by three months to report it was already preparing on the impact of such change. It will now be produced in the autumn. But they agree this is an issue of fraud. Any proved labeling while giving some confidence to the consumer won?t necessarily cure the problem. The common consensus is that tougher penalties are required. The chair of the meeting, the Irish agriculture minister Simon Coveney said it was widely accepted in the meeting that the newer technique of DNA testing of food should now be standard across Euro.
The Syrian opposition has said it will attend an international meeting in Rome later this week reversing an earlier decision to boycott it. The leader of the Syrian National Coalition Mouaz al-Khatib said the change of heart came after the U.S. Secretary of State and the British foreign secretary promised specific help to ease the suffering of the Syrian people. Meanwhile, residents say there?s been a large explosion in the Syrian capital Damascus. The blast was followed by heavy gunfire in the eastern district of Al-Kaboun. It?s not clear what the target was.

Nigeria?s eastern Taraba state. The violence began after a quarrel during a football match in the town of Wukari which spread to neighbouring villages.
The most senior Roman Catholic cleric in Britain has resigned after allegations that he behaved inappropriately towards priests three decades ago. Cardinal Keith O?Brien said his resignation as the head of the Church in Scotland was immediate. At the weekend, he said he would contest the allegations. James Robbins reports
These accusations of improper behavior bring the taint of scandal to the very heart of Catholic Church. Other cardinals have largely been accused of cover-up rather than direct personal involvement. The Vatican has been working particularly hard in these last days of Benedict?s pontificate to blame enemies of the Church accusing them of sensationalizing scandal to disrupt the coming election of his successor. But this blow has come from inside the Church itself.
An Italian prosecutor has formally requested that the captain of cruise ship Costa Concordia which sank off the coast of Tuscan should face manslaughter charges. Thirty-two people died when the ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground on the Island of Giglio and partially sank. Prosecutors also want the captain Francesco Schettino to face charges of causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship.
The President of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto has passed into law sweeping reforms of the country?s educ ation system. For the first time, Mexico will have an independent body to oversee teaching and the curriculum and teachers and schools will now be assessed.
Finally almost half a million people have voted to name one of Pluto?s newly discovered moons Vulcan in a tribute to the classic sci-fi series Star Trek. Vulcan was the fictional home planet of Mr. Spock who was second in command on the USS enterprise.

Th e leader of Italy?s center-left has described the impasse following the country?s general election as dramatic. But Pier Luigi Bersani whose coalition won most seats in parliament gave no clear answer to the question which group was his preferred partner in government, the center-right or the party of protest led by Beppe Grillo. From Rome, Gavin Hewitt reports.
Twenty-four hours after the polls closed, the leader of the center-left, Pier Luigi Bersani said Italy faced a dramatic situation and blamed the result on austerity. Mr. Bersani said it was not just an Italian problem. The bell was tolling for Europe. The deadlock in Italy has rattled Europe?s leaders. Ministers from Germany, France and Spain all called on Italy to establish a stable government as soon as possible. They fear that the uncertainty will damage the fragile Euro zone. Silvio Berlusconi said Italy cannot be ungoverned and over the days ahead there will be attempts to form a governing coalition.
Aid agencies say they are shocked and appalled by the number of children killed in Syria last week. At least 70 children died as a result of government missile strikes on Aleppo. More details from Leliana Hosea
A new investigation by Human Rights Watch inside Syria?s northern city of Aleppo has confirmed the deaths of 141 people, half of whom were children. They were killed in four separate government attacks on civilian areas in and around the city. The Human Rights Watch researcher Hula Sullivan says despite documenting violations in Syria for a long time including shelling and air strikes what he has seen in the last four days is the worst yet.
The former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss Kahn has failed in his attempt to halt the publication of a book written by a former lover outlining a fictionalized account of their affair. But the book Beauty and the Beast include an insert and the author, the lawyer Marcela Lacub and her publisher have been ordered to pay damages to Mr. Strauss Kahn.
A court in the Maldives has convicted a 15-year-old rape victim of engaging in premarital sex and sentenced her to 100 lashes. The government has criticized the conviction. Charles Havilland reports.
Behind the Maldives? image as a honeymoon paradise of Coral Islands lies a society whose people are often subjected to harsh laws. This girl in the north of the country was raped last year by her stepfather who was also convicted of murdering the baby born as a result. But during investigations the 15-year-old was accused of having premarital sex with a separate man. She?s now been sentenced to eight months of house arrest and to 100 lashes. The Islamic Sharia punishment is to take place when she turns 18 but can happen earlier if she requests it.

President Obama has urged Congress to pass a bill to avert billions of dollars of automatic spending cuts which are due to start taking effect on Friday. The cuts were originally scheduled to begin two months ago alongside tax hikes after a bitter and protracted partisan row, the tax increases were played back but the spending cuts were merely postponed.
The prosecution at the international criminal court in The Hague has said it would not subject to a delay in the trial of a candidate in the forthcoming Kenyan presidential election Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto. Four suspects face charges of crimes against humanity and accuse of organizing violence that left more than 1,000 people dead after elections in 2007. They will due to go on trial at The Hague in April. Anna Hooligan has more.
The defense called for a delay the prosecution rejected their arguments. But now admits operational constraints such as the availability of court space may make an April date untenable. The four suspects are among Kenya?s rich est and most powerful men. The greatest impact though of a delayed start date will be the potential political implications. A trial in April may have jeopardized the chances of Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto participating in a second round run-off if there is no clear winner in the first round of voting on the 4th of March.
Owners of horse and donkey drawn carts in the Colombian capital Bogota have started handing them into the authorities as part of the deal to replace them with motorized vehicles. The project aims to make the city animal-free. People who trade in their animals will receive money, a new vehicle or help with a business plan. The authorities say nearly 2,000 animals are to be replaced and put out to grass in rural communities by the end of the year.

The American billionaire and world?s first space tourist Dennis Tito has announced he will fund a manned mission to Mars in 2018. Mr. Tito said he was looking for a middle-aged man and woman for the journey that would last about 500 days. Mr. Tito said the mission was needed to advance human knowledge and experience.

A coalition of civil society groups in Kenya is warning about the threat of further violence ahead of Monday?s elections. The Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights released a statement citing voter intimidation, hates speech and threats expulsion. Richard Hamilton reports.

More than 20 Chadian soldiers have been killed so far.

The American civil rights leader Rosa Parks has been honored with a commemorative statue in the capital building in Washington. Mrs. Parks who died in 2005 is widely regarded as the mother of the civil rights movement in the U.S. In 1955 she defiantly refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in the racially segregated city of Montgomery, Alabama. Unveiling the nine-foot bronze statue, President Obama said Rosa Parks had taken her rightful place among those who shaped American history.

The papacy of Benedict XVI has now formally come to an end. In the first papal resignation for 600 years, Benedict handed his authority over to his deputy. Benedict will reside at the palace south of Rome while a group of Cardinals chooses the next head of the Roman Catholic Church. James Robbins reports.

The US soldier accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of documents to the Wikileaks website has pleaded not guilty to the charge of aiding the enemy. But Bradley Manning ended a guilty plea to lesser charges. Here's Paul Adams.

At least 30 people have been killed and hundreds injured in protests across Bangladesh after an Islamist leader was sentenced to death for his role in the war of independence against Pakistan. Three policemen were beaten to death, there are reports of intense clashes between security forces and protesters in many districts resulting in the death of dozens of people. In the southern region, houses and temples of minority Hindu community were burnt down.

The former president of Haiti Jean-Claude Duvalier has appeared in court for hearing about human rights abuses during his rule in the 1970s and 80s. The court will decide whether Mr Duvalier, known as Baby Doc, should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. He denies the charges.

The International Monetary Fund is warning that billions of dollars of government spending cuts in the Untied States will have an impact on global economic growth. The measures are due to take effect automatically on Friday unless President Obama can reach a deal with Republicans in Congress. The IMF says that if the cuts are fully implemented, the impact on the America's economic growth this year would be 0.6 percentage points.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta has told the BBC that the pressure of waiting trial at the International Criminal Court has been hard for him and his family, but he maintains his innocence. He is one of the front-runners for the post of president in Monday's elections, but he is facing trial at the ICC for allegedly orchestrating violence after the disputed 2007 election. However, Mr Kenyatta said it was important to focus on the country's future.

The health ministry in Israel is setting up a committee to investigate why contraceptive injections were widely given to Ethiopian immigrated women. It will look into allegations the steps were a deliberate attempt to reduce births in the Ethiopian-Israeli community. The move follows an Israeli television documentary that claimed a number of Ethiopian women had been given the injections against their will.

Andrei Borodin is accused of carrying out the fraud while he was head of the Bank of Moscow. He says the charges are politically motivated and accuses the former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev of being behind the move. The Russian authorities have criticized the British decision.

Chad says its army has killed one of the most senior Islamist militants in North Africa Moktar Belmoktar. Moktar Belmoktar was at one point a leading figure in the North African militant group Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Tomas Fessy reports

Police in Brazil are investigating the appearance of two alleged human skulls in the center of Sao Paulo. One of them was left at an Avenida Paulista building, one of the most expensive addresses in the Brazilian financial capital. CCTV images reportedly show a woman placing the skull by the front door and leaving. The other skull was left in a bag a week ago next to a building designed by Brazil?s most famous architect Oscar Niemever. Investigators have yet（not）to establish any connection between the two cases.

At least 45 people have been killed in Pakistan in a bomb attack in a Shiite dominated part of the country's biggest city, Karachi, 150 others were wounded in the two explosions. The attack comes a week after a bomb blast in the Pakistani city of Quetta killed almost 90 people, most of them Shiites. Mike Wooldridge reports from Islamabad.

Sunni Muslim extremists have stepped up attacks against members of Pakistan's minority Shiite community. And bombings in the city of Quetta alone have killed nearly 200 people since the start of this year.

Queen Elizabeth has been admitted to hospital in London suffering from gastroenteritis - stomach infection. She was taken ill at the end of last week. Buckingham Palace says all the Queen's official engagements this week, including a trip to Rome, have now been cancelled or postponed. She is said to be in good spirits and has expected to remain in hospital for about two days. The Queen, who's 86, was last in hospital ten years ago.
