"Well, just take a look at that wheel(航轮)!” Earl Cooper said to Ca ndy, his wife. "It must be older than anything we have back home."

Earl was looking at the wall outside the pub(酒馆). The pub's name, The Old Swan, was on the wall. Next to the name was a wooden ship's wheel and in the middle of the wheel was the name of a ship, HMS Swan. The wheel was old, Earl could tell.

The next morning, Earl asked to see Tony Thatcher. The Old Swan was Tony's pub. He took Earl to his office while Candy had a coffee outside by the river. Earl said he could give Tony a lot of money for the ship's wheel. He told Tony that Benjamin Cooper, his grandfather, went to America on the ship HMS Swan. But Tony said no at first. After all, the wheel was very

old and it was part of the pub's past.

"You can think of the past, Mr. Thatcher - can I call you Ton y? - or you can think of today. And with the money, Tony, you can buy a good car. Maybe a new Jaguar? And, as I've told you, the wheel is part of my family's past too. So you could say it's going back home, in a way. So, what do you say?"

A month later, Earl and Candy were smiling as they looked at the wall of their house in Houston, Texas. Earl thought to himself that, at last, he had a piece of his family's past. He was happy.

In Portsmouth, Tony Thatcher was happy, too. He was putting his new Jaguar into his large garage(车库). He was careful not to drive into any of the six ship's wheels in the garage. A friend of his made the wheels for him. They were just like the one that Earl bought. And there

was another wheel on the outside wall of The Old Swan now. Old or new - Tony thought there was no way that a tourist could ever know which was which. Never in a hundred years.

1.Why did Tony refuse to sell the wheel at first?

A. Because he thought it was old and part of the pub's past.

B. Because he wanted to show it was important to his pub.

C. Because he tried to sell it to someone else at a higher price.

D. Because he did not really believe what Earl had told him.

2.What can we infer(椎断) from the story?

A. Earl had looked for such a wheel for a long time before that.

B. Earl would soon find out the truth and become rather angry.

C. Tony had sold quite a few wheels like that and got wealthy,

D. Tony would play the same trick again to make more money.

3.Which of the following can be the best title of the story?

A. The Wheel on the Wall

B. An Excellent Buy

C. Old or New - Who Knows

D. the Family's Past

A. Because he thought it was old and part of the pub's past. B. Because he wanted to show it was important to his pub. C. Because he tried to sell it to someone else at a higher price. D. Because he did not really believe what Earl had told him.

After all,the wheel was very old and it was part of the pub's past.”

A. Earl had looked for such a

wheel for a long time before that. B. Earl would soon find

out the truth and become rather angry. C. Tony had sold

quite a few wheels like that and got wealthy.

Tony would play the same trick again to make more money.

A. The Wheel on the Wall墙

C. Old or New - Who Knows旧的新的,谁

知道?D. the Family's Past家的过去。

We usually believe what our brain tells us, but there are some amazing facts which show

that the brain tricks us. As a result, we think we can see something that is not actually there or

we ignore(忽视)things that actually are there.

Scientists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris have researched this phenomenon(现

象), which they call “change blindness”. Their experiments show how we sometimes just do not see what is in front of our eyes because 4 .

Here is one of their most famous experiments. In this experiment, the participants(参与

者)were shown a video of two groups of people (one group in white T-shirts and one group in

black T-shirts) who passed basketballs around in a hallway. Each group had three members. Simons and Chabris asked the participants to count how many times the white team passed the

ball. While the two teams were passing their balls around, a person dressed up as a big bear walked through the group and stopped to look at the camera. Simons and Chabris found that

about half of the research participants did not notice the big bear.

Passage 4

Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair or your fridge? It is possible

that they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, as the so-called "Internet of things" is developing.

The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. It is reported that during his

speech earlier this year, Samsung CEO(首席执行官)BK Yoon spent a lot of time talking about

the Internet of things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, whether it's a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner(吸尘器).

So, how do household(家用)objects that are part of Internet of things work? Well, think of a usual chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows that the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.

An Internet-connected camera, like a smart-home camera, could help people feel safer in their homes. It can recognize(识别)people's faces, and even can see when someone passes by in the dark. Then it can send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who's there. If the person is someone you don't know, it can tell you that, too.

But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security(安全)systems to the Internet, there may be problems. For example, many early connected-home devices(装置)don't have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked(被黑客攻击),In addition, it could be difficult to get these devices to work together because they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2014.

So, picture this: you walk in through the front door of your home. The temperature changes

to make you feel comfortable after a long day at school. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.

1. The Samsung CEO's speech is mentioned to prove that_____.

A. the Internet of things will appear in our daily life sooner

C. Samsung products have been part of the Internet of things

D. he spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of things

2. We can infer(推断)from paragraphs 3 and 4 that

A. the chair can know whether the user feels cold or not

B. a usual chair can warm up when it knows the user comes in

C. an Internet-connected camera can be used to take photos in the house

D. an Internet-connected camera can be connected to the user's smartphone

3. According to the passage, it is mentioned that_____·

①the temperature inside is neither too high nor too low

②your fridge provides the drinks for you

③the chair warms up if you feel cold

④your favourite music starts playing

⑤your washing machine starts working

A.①②⑤

B.②③④

C.①③④

D.①④⑤

4. What's the problem about the Internet of things?

A. Companies which produce connected-home devices haven't joined together.

B. Connected-home devices may not work together and can easily get hacked.

C. Companies have difficulty connect ing security system to the Internet.’

D. These new devices are produced by different companies.

Recently, Debrett’s (

the first time, answering the questions that most trouble the British public in 2014. Here are

some of the questions.

Can we use a mobile phone?

According to Debrett’s, it is always rude to pay more attention to a phone than a person when

we communicate with others, and mobile phones should always be put away when you deal with

other business like paying for something in a shop. They should also be switched off in theatres,

cinemas, or any space where silence is wanted.

Many people are clearly unclear on the subject of social kissing. According to Debrett’s,

kissing is not proper in many special situations. On the whole, it should only be used among

friends, but not on first meeting. An air kiss, without contact, may seem rude, so very slight

contact is best but no sound effects are needed.

Do we need to give up our seat on public transport?

In a recent university experiment, only 20 per cent of London tube passengers offered to

ld

give up their seat to a pregnant(怀孕的)woman. According to Debrett’s, passengers shou always offer their seat to anyone that is pregnant, elderly, or clearly in need. It is important to

remember. However, refusing the offer of a seat is as rude as not offering a seat.

Can we eat before everyone is served?

of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to say that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.

And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Mary at the door and said, “That new sweater looks great on you.”

“Oh, Tom, y ou noticed,” she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little confused(困惑).

After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Mary suggested a walk on the beach. I started to

vacation passed. I made a new decision to keep on remembering to choose love.

There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Mary and I still laugh

about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Mary looked at me with the

“What’s the matter?” I asked her.

“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with sadness, “Do you know something I don

With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer. 5G could also be used to power the internet of things (IoT), that is, a large online network that connects all things and people.
