Edith Nesbit was born in London in 1858. Sadly, her father died when she was only four years old. She grew up with two sisters and three brothers in a house in the country. The children had many happy experiences as they explored the gardens, forests, and the railway tracks near their home. When Nesbit was fourteen years old, she began to write poems.

Nesbit got married at the age of eighteen. The couple was poor, and Nesbit began to write stories to make money. Many of her stories came from her childhood memories. For example, many of the characters and places in the story The Railway Children came from Nesbit’s own childhood. At first, she used the name “E. Nesbit”because she did not want people to know that she was a woman. A long time ago, people thought that only men could be good writers. Later, Nesbit became proud of who she was. She even cut her hair short. It was very unusual at that time.

The Railway Children is one of her most famous stories and one of the most popular children’s stories in England. It was first published in 1905. Since then, it has been translated into many different languages and made into plays and movies. Most recently, in 2000, it was made into a TV movie in England.
