In a room where four men were seated at a large table, one of them rose and walked round to shake hands with me. He introduced his colleagues and then indicated a chair, in which I seated myself. After asking me briefly about my place of birth and my Royal Air Force experience, they began to question me carefully on telecommunications. Now I was confident, at ease with a familiar subject. They questioned me thoroughly, but I was relaxed now. The years of study and work began to pay off, and I knew I was doing well. I was enjoying it.

When it was over, Mr. Symonds, the man who had welcomed me, leaned back in his chair and

said: ―Well, now, my colleagues and I are completely satisfied with your replies and we feel sure that, in terms of qualifications, ability and experience, you are well suited to the post we have in mind. But we are faced with a certain difficulty. If we employ you, it means we must place you in a position of authority over a number of our English employees. Many of them have been with us for a long time and we feel sure that your appointment would upset good relations within the firm. We could not offer you the post without the responsibility, and we would not ask you to accept one or two other positions of a different type. They exist, but they are not suitable for someone like you. So, I’m afraid, we will not be able to offer you the job.‖

I felt suddenly weak, and I was quite unable to think. Yet, somehow I managed to leave that office, realizing that I had either forgotten or completely ignored during the six exciting years of the war – my black skin.

(B)

On Thursday, September 1, 1859, a 33-year-old amateur astronomer named Richard Carrington climbed the stairs to his private observatory near London, and as was his habit on a sunny morning, adjusted his telescope to capture an 11-inch image of the sun onto a screen. He was tracing sunspots on a piece of paper when, before his eyes, ―two dots of extremely bright and white light‖ suddenly appeared in one large sunspot group. Before dawn the next day enormous auroral (像极光的) displays of red, green, and purple lighted the skies as far south as Hawaii and Panama. Campers in the Rocky Mountains, mistaking the aurora for sunrise, got up and started cooking breakfast.

The flare(耀斑)Carrington had observed signaled a solar super-storm --- an enormous outburst that sent billions of tons of electrically-charged matter toward Earth. When the invisible wave struck the planet’s magnetic field(磁场), it caused electrical currents to move through telegraph lines. The blast knocked out service at several stations, but telegraphers elsewhere found that they could disconnect their batteries and go on with operations using the geomagnetic(地磁的) electricity alone.

Operators of today’s communication systems and power grids(电网)would be less fortunate. No solar super-storm as powerful as the 1859 event has occurred since, so it is difficult to calculate what impact a comparable storm might have on to day’s more wired world. A hint came with the Quebec blackout of March 13, 1989, when a solar storm roughly a third less powerful

than the Carrington event knocked out the power grid serving more than six million customers in less than two minutes’ time. A Carrington-class storm could fry more transformers (变电器)than the power companies have stocked, leaving millions without light, drinkable water, heating, air-conditioning, fuel, telephone service, or even food and medications during the months it would take to manufacture and install new transformers. A recent National Academy of Sciences report estimates that such a storm could cause the economic damage of 20 Katrina-class tornadoes, costing one to two trillion dollars in the first year alone and taking a decade to recover from.

―We cannot predict what the sun will do more than a few days ahead of time,‖ says KarelSchrijver of the Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory in Palo Alto, California. With a period of maximum solar activity expected to begin this year, space-weather centres are adding staff and hoping for the best. ―We’re trying to understand how space weather affects society and just how bad it can get,‖ says Schrijver.

70. What impact did solar super-storm occurring in 1859 make on the earth?

A. Shutting down power lines.

B. Destroying batteries.

C. Interrupting some telegraph operations.

D. Frightening mountain campers.

71. What can be concluded from the third paragraph of the passage?

A. The Quebec blackout in 1989 was caused by a Carrington-class solar storm.

B. A Carrington-class solar storm caused great damage of 20 Katrina-class tornadoes.

C. A solar super-storm could send millions of people back to a pre-electric way of life.

D. Operators of today’s communication systems a re less fortunate than the telegraphers then.

72. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A. A few days’ warning of the solar storm can be given by the space-weather center .

B. Carrington provided a huge complete image of the solar surface the very day.

C. A solar super-storm could cause communication blackout as well as power failure.

D. We are increasingly depending on electrical equipment and space-based communications.

73. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. The Forecast of Space Weather

B. Sun Flares and Sun Storm

C. A Carrington-class Solar Storm

D. The Impact of Solar Storms

(C)

By now you’ve probably heard about the ―you’re not special‖ speech, when English teacher Davi d McCullough told graduating seniors at Wellesley High School: ―Do not get the idea you’re anything special, because you’re not.‖ Mothers and fathers at the ceremony – and a whole lot of other parents across the Internet –took issue with McCullough’s ego-puncturing words. But lost in the uproar was something we really should be taking to heart: our younger people actually have no idea whether they’re particularly talented or accomplished or not. In our eagerness to elevate their self-esteem, we forgot to teach them how to realistically assess their own abilities, a crucial requirement for getting better at anything from math to music to sports. In fact, it’s not just privileged high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above average.

Such inflated(夸大的) self-judgments have been found in study after study, and it’s often exactly when we’re least competent at a given task that we rate our performance most generously. In a 2006 study published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on an essay test were the most charitable in their self-evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more stringently. Poor students, the authors note, ―lack insight‖ into their own inadequacy. Why should th is be? Another study, led by Cornell

University psychologist David Dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. People who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor Justin Kruger, suffer from a ―dual burden‖: they’re not good at what they do, and their very inability prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.

In Dunning and Kruger’s study, subjects scoring at the bottom of the heap on tests of logic, grammar and humor ―extremely overestimated‖ their talents. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile(百分位), they guessed they were in the 62th. What these individuals lacked (in addition to clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was ―metacognitive skill‖: the capacity to monitor how well they’re performing. In the absence of th at capacity, the subjects arrived at an overly hopeful view of their own abilities. There’s a paradox(悖论) here, the authors note: ―The skills that engender(使产生)competence in a particular field are often the very same skills necessary to evaluate competence in that field.‖

There are a couple of ways out of this double bind. First, we can learn to make honest comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you yourself don’t possess it, and compare what you can do against what truly excellent individuals are able to accomplish. Second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. Find a critic who will tell you not only how poorly you are doing, but just what it is that you are doing wrong. As Dunning and Kruger note, success indicates to us that everything went right, but failure is more ambiguous: any number of things could have gone wrong. Use this external feedback to figure out exactly where and when you screwed up.

If we adopt these strategies – and most importantly, teach them to our children –they won’t need parents or a commencement speaker to tell them that they’re special. They’ll already know that they are, or have a plan to get that way.

74. The purpose of the speech by David McCullough is to lead people to focus on the real problem that _____________________?

A. parents don’t know whether their children are talented or not.

B. young people don’t know how to assess their abilities realistically

C. a crucial requirement hasn’t been set up for young people to get better

D. people always tend to consider themselves to be above average

75. The word ―stringently‖ (in the paragraph 2) can be best replaced by _______________.

A. inadequately

B. subjectively

C. strictly

D. poorly

76. Which of the following is NOT true about poor students according to the passage?

A. They usually give themselves high scores in self-evaluation.

B. They tend to be unable to know exactly how bad they are.

C. They are inadequate in logic, grammar and a sense of humor.

D. They lack the ability to monitor how well they’re performing.

77. Speaking of becoming special, the best strategies suggested by the author are that ________________________.

A. neither parents nor a commencement speaker can tell whether one is special

B. one will know where and when he fails through comparison with others

C. one should carefully study past success and failure in order to get better

D. we need internal honesty with ourselves and external honesty from others

Section C

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

The history of responses to the work of the artist Sandro Botticelli (1444-1510) suggests that widespread appreciation by critics is a relatively recent phenomenon. Writing in 1550, Vasari expressed an unease with Botticelli’s work, admitting that the artist fitted awkwardly into his evolutionary scheme of the history of art. Over the next two centuries, academic art historians defamed Botticelli in favor of his fellow Michelangelo. Even when anti-academic art historians of the early nineteenth century rejected many of the standards of evaluation adopted by their predecessors, Botticel li’s work remained outside of accepted taste, pleasing neither amateur observers nor judges.

The primary reason for Botticelli’s unpopularity is not difficult to understand: most observers, up until the mid-nineteenth century, did not consider him to be noteworthy, because his work, for the most part, did not seem to these observers to exhibit the traditional characteristics of fifteenth- century Florentine art. For example, Botticelli rarely employed the technique of strict perspective and, unlike Michelangelo, never used chiaroscuro(明暗法).

Another reason for Botticelli’s unpopularity may have been that his attitude toward the style of classical art was very different from that of his contemporaries. Although he was thoroughly exposed to classical art, he showed little interest in borrowing from the classical style. Indeed, it is paradoxical that a painter of large-scale classical subjects adopted a style that was only slightly similar to that of classical art.

In any case, when viewers began to examine more closely the relationship of B otticelli’s work to the tradition of fifteenth-century Florentine art, his reputation began to grow. Analyses and assessments of Botticelli made between 1850 and 1870 by the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite(拉斐尔前派) movement, as well as by the writer Pater (although he, unfortunately, based his assessment on an incorrect analysis of Botticelli’s personality), inspired a new appreciation of Botticelli throughout the English-speaking world. Yet Botticelli’s work, especially the Sistine frescoes (西斯廷教堂壁画), did not generate worldwide attention until it was finally subjected to a comprehensive and meticulous analysis by Home in 1908. Home rightly demonstrated that the frescoes shared important features with paintings by other fifteenth-century Florentines --- features such as skillful representation of anatomical(解剖的)proportions, and of the human figure in motion. However, Home argued that Botticelli did not treat these qualities as ends in themselves--- rather, that he emphasized clear depletion of a story, a unique achievement and one that made the traditional Florentine qualities less central. Because of Home’s emphasis crucial to any study of art, the twentieth century has come to appreciate Botticelli’s achievements.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.) 78. We can learn from the passage that art critics before the mid-19th century had a history of _____________________________________________ Botticelli’s work.

79. The main reason for Botticelli’s unpopularity for seve ral centuries in the history of art was that _____________________________________________.

80. According to Home, what did Botticelli’s products have in common with other fifteenth-century Florentine art?

____________________________________________________________________________ 81. After reading the whole passage, give a title most suitable for it.

Questions 11 through 1 are based on the following passage.

Customs vary from country to country. In China, newly married couples, of course, receive many kinds of gifts from friends, colleagues and relatives. How can the couples do with the gifts if they find them not to their taste? Usually they can do nothing but keep the gifts and give thanks to the givers.

In the United States, couples also usually receive gifts from their relative and friends when they get married. But it is common that sometimes a bride will exchange a gift for something else if she doesn’t find it useful. We give gifts to express our good wishes for the marriage, but gifts aren’t necessary for the marriage itself.

However, i n some societies gifts are very important, and the marriage isn’t legal without them. One type of gifts is called bride service. A young husband must work for his wife’s family. He may work for as long as fifteen years or until the third child is born. Bride service may seem strange to us, but it is necessary in societies where people don’t have money or material to exchange at marriage.

Questions:

11.What can the bride do if she finds the marriage gift useless in the United States?

12.Why does a husband have to work for his wife’s family in some societies?

13.What does the speaker mainly talk about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

The first English dictionary was published in 1604. The dictionary was actually nothing more than a list of about 3,000 difficult words, each followed by a one-word definition. The author, Tobert Cadre, made no attempt to include everyday words in his dictionary. During the 1600s more dictionaries were published. Each followed Cadre’s lead and presented a few thousand hard words. Around 1700 one dictionary maker, John Kersey, did define easy words as well as hard ones. But until 1750 all dictionaries were rather rough and not very valuable.

A man named Dr. Samuel Johnson changed all this. In 1755, Dr. Johnson produced the first modern dictionary. He included in his dictionary all important words, and he gave good meanings. By the end of the 1700s most dictionary makers had followed Johnson’s lead. Dictionaries were getting better and better.

The 1800s saw the great improvement in the quality of dictionaries. In England scholars planned and prepared the Oxford English Dictionary. One of the most interesting features of the Oxford Dictionary is its word histories. It traced the history of each word from its earliest recorded use up to the time of the printing of the dictionary. Questions:

14.Which of the following best describes the first English dictionary?

15.What is the most interesting feature of the Oxford Dictionary?

16.What can we learn from the passage?

Section C

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Hello.

W: Hi, Jonny. It’s Chris.

M: Chris?! How are you?

W: Fine. Thanks. What do you think of your new apartment?

M: Oh, I love it. There is so much space.

W: Yes. But it’s too big for my family really. I was going to say…have you worked out how to turn the heating on?

I forgot to tell you.

M: No. I haven’t actually. It’s freezing.

W: Oh, I’m sorry. There’s a switch in the bathroom cupboard.

M: The upstairs bathroom?

W: No…the one downstairs. I’ve written a note and stuck it on the door.

M: OK. I will go down and have a look in a minute. There’s something else I wanted to ask you, actually.

W: Yeah, what’s that?

M: Well, there’s some chicken in the fridge…

W: Oh, god! I forgot about that. It must have gone off.

M: No, it’s all right. The sell-by date is tomorrow.

W: Ok, well, eat it, then. You could make a nice chicken soup out of it.

M: Well, anyway I’m not much of a cook. Have you got any books on cooking anywhere?

W: Yeah, there are hundreds of them on the kitchen shelf. How did you manage to get to your age without being able to cook?

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

W: Hey, Tim, I’m thinking about buying a car. I know you have one, so what do you think?

M: Well, you already own a motorcycle. Why do you want a car?

W: I’d like to go on some trips with my friends. More people can fit in a car, and it’s more comfortable.

M: True, but cars are also expensive. You have to buy the car, and then pay for insurance, gas, maintenance and other expenses. I wish I still had my motorcycle. It was so much cheaper.

W: But I have money. I’ve been saving for a long time. And besides, don’t you think a car is worth the expense? M: It depends. Will you really travel a lot so that it’s worth the expense? You can always rent a car.

W: Renting a car is expensive, too. Besides, I think the storage space would be useful for both travelling and everyday life.

M: I got a car because I have a wife and kids now. But you’ll be the only pers on using the car most of the time.

How much stuff will you really need to carry?

W: I guess I don’t need a lot of storage space most of the time. But cars also offer more shelter from the bad weather than motorcycles do.
