Looking back on my childhood, I gradually realized that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way,my brothers and sisters soon left their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them,I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental mathematics.
Before World War I our family lived in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied researches. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious (清醒的) mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, some of which might be honored with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, sharp eyes, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist, in which one of the excellent and essential qualities required is self-discipline(自律), a quality I don’t have. Therefore, a scientist, in a way, can be made, whilea na turalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.

A lot of people had told me to be careful of thieves in the park, so I didn’t usually take anything with me. But one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put $10 in my back pocket.
While I was running through the park, a young man knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. I thought it was a bit strange, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. I immediately ran after the young man and took him by his arm. I started shouting and de manding that he give me the $10. I’m not usually a hot-headed person but I was really angry.
This frightened him and he quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got there, I began to tell my wife my story,” You won’t believe what happened to me!” I started. She immediately interrupted, “ I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
