On October 19, 1959, the first Special English program was broadcast on the Voice of America. It was an experiment. The goal was to communicate by radio in clear and simple English with people whose native language is not English. Experts said the goal was admirable, but the method would not work. They were proved wrong. The Special English programs quickly became some of the most popular on VOA. And they still are. Forty years later, Special English continues to communicate with people who are not fluent in English. But during the years its role has expanded. It also helps people learn American English. And it provides listeners, even those who are native English speakers, with information they cannot find elsewhere.

Today, Special English broadcasts around the world seven days a week, five times a day. Each half-hour broadcast begins with ten minutes of the latest news followed by 20 minutes of feature programming. There is a different short feature every weekday about science, development, agriculture and environment, and on the weekend, about news events and American idioms.

Three elements make Special English unique. It has a limited vocabulary of 1500 words. Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions. Some are more difficult. They are used for reporting world events and describing discoveries in medicine and science. Special English is written in short, simple sentences that contain only one idea. No idioms are used. And Special English is spoken at a slower pace, about two-thirds the speed of Standard English. This helps people learning English hear each word clearly. It also helps people who are English speakers understand complex subjects.

Through the years, Special English has become a very popular tool for teaching English, even though it was not designed as teaching program. It succeeds in helping people learn English in a non-traditional way. Individuals record the programs and play them over and over to practice their listening skills. In countries around the world, English teachers assign Special English to their students. They praise it for improving their students' ability to understand American English and for the content of the programs. Universities and private companies in many countries produce packages of Special English materials for student use.

It’s great fun to explore new places—it feels like an adventure, even when you know you’re not the first to have been there. But make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles.

● Do the map reading if you’re being driven somewhere. It’ll be easier if you keep turning the map so it follows the direction you’re traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn or you’ll have to move to the back seat.

● Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You'll need a good map, a compass ,

a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies . Tell someone where you’re going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The test is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.

● See if your school or a club organizes orienteering activities, in which you need

a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B (and B to C, etc.)in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. Either way, it s not only good fun, but a great way to keep fit.

44. Sitting beside the driver, you should___________.

A. look ahead to see where there’s a turn

B. direct the driver when necessary

C. move to the back seat if feeling uncomfortable

D. keep looking at the map to find a place to go to

45.Why do you need to tell someone your exploration plan before setting out?

A. To be saved in case of an accident.

B. To get information when in danger.

C. To share the fun with him/her in exploration.

D. To tell him/her what’s going on with the group members.

46.Orienteering activities can______________.

A. make people work fast

B. help people organize other activities

C. help people stay healthy

D. make people get prepared for sports

47.The text mainly talks about____________.

A. the fun of exploration

B. what to bring for exploration

C. the way to use a map in exploration

D. how to prevent getting lost in exploration

Moral(道德的)science is taught as a subject in most schools but with little effect. Perhaps part of the problem lies in the fact that morality is not a science, strictly speaking. It is too much of a social phenomenon, and also has too much of the personal and subjective things mixed within. Besides, morality itself changes with generations. So it is impossible to be defined in a textbook.

I remember sitting through forty minutes of moral lessons, which told stories about little children who never told lies and were rewarded for their goodness. It had little effect and left no impression on me, though.

If moral science has to be taught as a subject in schools, it needs a participatory(参与其中的) approach. When you tell a child about morals, you also have to deal with social norms(规范)and cultural differences. You have to explain that morality can be subjective, and be able to co-exist in society. You will probably have to refer to the morals of the present time.

The best way to tell a child how to live is to show him what is valued. If a child likes his friend, you have to make the child think about why. Once the child notices and recognizes goodness in others, he or she is likely to develop it as well.

In fact, children learn most of their morals by watching people around them. They absorb behavior patterns from teachers and older students. They watch to see what is rewarded and who is punished. They learn on the sports field and through social work. Moral science lessons should simply consist of letting them live and interact, and watch you support correct values and reward good behavior.

48. Which is NOT the reason that moral science is taught in schools but with little effect?

A. Morality doesn’t strictly belong to a science.

B. Morality is more like a social phenomenon.

C. Different generations have different moral ideas.

D. Morality can’t be written down in textbooks.

49.The author describes his own experience of having moral lessons in order to _____.

A. explain telling lies is not moral for little children.

B. advise people should be rewarded for their goodness.

C. show he has no opinions about moral science.

D. prove moral lessons in schools have little effect.

50. When you tell a child about morals, you should________.

A. tell him about social norms and cultural differences.

B. teach him to share personal moral ideas with others.

C. explain that nobody can influence his moral ideas.

D. say that the present morals are likely to be changed.

51. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A. The value of teachers’ setting a good example.

B. The best way of teaching children about morals.

C. The influence of people’s behavior on morals.

D. The importance of rewarding good behavior.

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does somethin g the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant (怀孕的)woman. Then, they played a

recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activiti es and did not interfere ( 干预)unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression. The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did bet ter when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

52.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?

A. The environment.

B. Mother's sensitivity.

C. Their peers (同龄人)

D. Education before birth.

53.What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?

A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born.

B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.

C. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.

D. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies' language skills. 54.Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?

A. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.

B. The children of women who did not suffer from depression.

C. The children of depressed but caring mothers.

D. Children with high communication abilities.

55.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.

Energy independence. It has a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it? If you think so, you’re not alone, because en ergy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession(经济衰退).

“Energy independence” and its rhetorical(修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, unreliable concepts that are rarely thought through. What is it we want independence from exactly?

Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil. But there are reasons that we buy all that oil from elsewhere.

The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流) of bio-fuel(生物燃料) available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.

Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad. Vast areas of the United States are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to tolerate the environmental impacts of domestic(国内的) energy production in order to cut back imports?

Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this m uch, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.

There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economy. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher prices. At the same time, we get massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.

42.What does the author say about energy independence for America?

A. It sounds very attractive.

B. It will bring oil prices down.

C. It ensures national security.

D. It has long been everyone’s dream.

43.What does the author think of bio-fuels?

A. They keep America’s economy running healthily.

B. They cause serious damage to the environment.

C. They prove to be a good alternative(substitute) to petroleum.

D. They do not provide a sustainable energy supply.

44.Why does America rely heavily on oil imports?

A. It wants to expand its storage of raw oil.

B. Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.

C. Its own oil production falls short of demand.

D. It wants to keep its own environment untouched.

45.What does the author say about oil trade?

A. It makes for economic recession.

B. It brings benefit only to the sellers.

C. It improves economic efficiency.

D. It saves the cost of oil exploration.

46.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To explain the increase of international oil trade.

B. To raise Americans’ awareness of the energy crisis.

C. To argue for America’s dependence on oil imports.

D. To stress the importance of energy protection.

In the United States alone, over 100 million cell-phones are thrown away each year. Cell-phones are part of a growing mountain of electronic waste like computers and personal digital assistants. The electronic waste stream is increasing three times faster than traditional garbage as a whole.

Electronic devices contain valuable metals such as gold and silver. A Swiss study reported that while the weight of electronic goods represented by precious metals was relatively small in comparison to total waste, the concentration (含量) of gold and other precious metals was higher in So-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals.

Electronic wastes also contain many poisonous metals. Even when the machines are recycled and the harmful metals removed, the recycling process often is carried out in poor countries, in practically uncontrolled ways which allow many poisonous substances to escape into the environment.

Creating produ cts out of raw materials creates much more waste material, up to 100 times more, than the material contained in the finished products. Consider again the cell-phone, and imagine the mines that produced those metals, the factories needed to make the box and packaging(包装) it came in. Many wastes produced in the producing process are harmful as well.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that most waste is dangerous in that “the production, distribution, and use of products —as well as management of the resulting waste —all result in greenhouse gas release.” Individuals can reduce their contribution by creating less waste at the start — for instance, buying reusable products and recycling.

In many countries the concept of extended producer responsibility is being considered or has been put in place as an incentive (动机) for reducing waste. If producers are required to take back packaging they use to sell their products, would they reduce the packaging in the first place?

Governments’ incentive to require producers to take responsibility for the packaging they produce is usually based on money. Why, they ask, should cities or towns be responsible for paying to deal with the bubble wrap (气泡垫) that encased your television?

From the gover nments’ point of view, a primary goal of laws requiring extended producer responsibility is to transfer both the costs and the physical responsibility of waste management from the government and tax-payers back to the producers.

47.By mentioning the Swiss study, the author intends to tell us that _________ .

A. the weight of e-goods is rather small

B. E-waste deserves to be made good use of

C. natural minerals contain more precious metals

D. the percentage of precious metals is heavy in e-waste

48.The responsibility of e-waste treatment should be extended _________ .

A. from producers to governments

B. from governments to producers

C. from individuals to distributors

D. from distributors to governments

49. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. The increase in e-waste.

B. The creation of e-waste.

C. The seriousness of e-waste.

D. The management of e-waste.

When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.

Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.

Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family mem bers sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business."

Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans' corporation makes more than $20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.

When I first told people I was going to work in Cameroon, the most common reaction was:“Why?” The second was:“It’s in Africa;you’ll die!” The third: “Where is that?”So let me give some answers. I was offered a job that looked interesting in a part of the world I’d never been to before. I’d also long had an interest in Africa, so I decided it was time to find out the reality. A small amount of research showed that in more than 40 years since gaining independence, Cameroon has been a peaceful country with no wars. Not only were there no wars but Cameroon is a food exporter to the region.

Now, after three years, I can say that these have been the healthiest years of my life! No malaria or any of the other frightening diseases you read about when Africa is mentioned .The worst thing that ever happened to me was a bout of food poisoning-once.

So what is it like to teach here? Well not surprisingly, not so different from anywhere else. Most students come to us with a bit of English in their heads. Cameroon is a bilingual country with French and English as official languages, while there are also close to 200 local ethnic languages in a country of 16 million people. French is the dominant language, spoken by about eighty percent of the population.

The local school system is very traditional and somewhat strict. Perhaps not surprisingly when there can be up to 150 students in the classroom ( of which maybe 30 have the books, and there are probably seats for 70).Like anywhere, students appreciate it if you know a bit about their country, and not just Roger Milla (top scorer of the 1990 World Cup, in cas e you’re wondering). It helps if you know the names of the ten provinces, know who the first president was, or can say a word in a local language.

So in conclusion: Cameroon isn’t just football. Nor is it war, poverty and disease. It’s just life and people, like anywhere else.

44.On hearing the writer’s decision, most people__________.

A.admired him

B.considered it as a joke

C.didn’t understand him

D.laughed at him

45.According to the passage, Cameroon is__________.

A.peaceful after liberation

B.a country full of diseases

C.a poor country, especially lack of food

D.quite different from others in education

46.What can we infer from the passage?

A. Food expor t may lead to many frightening diseases.

B.Most students in Cameroon do not need books.

C.Cameroon is not as bad as people commonly believed.

D.There must be a lot of people suffering from food poisoning.

47.Which language is spoken by about eighty percent of the population in Cameroon?

A. local dialect

B. French

C. An ethnic language

D. English

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species. That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraem er, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda e ggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is ver y similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction.

I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”
