lotusdbl Psychologically there are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue absorption in the past. It does not do to live in memories, in regrets for the good old days, or in sadness about friends who are dead. One’s thoughts must be directed to the future, and to things about which there is something to be done. This is mot always easy; one’s own past is a gradually inc reasing weight. It is easy to think to oneself that one’s mind more keen. If this is true it should be forgotten, and if it is forgotten it will probably not be true.

The other thing to be avoided is clinging to2 youth in the hope of sucking vigor from its vitality3. When your children are grown up they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are unusually callous4. I do not mean that one should be without interest in them, but one’s interest should be contemplative and, if possible, philanthropic5, but not unduly emotional. Animals become indifferent to their young as soon as their young can look after themselves, but human beings, owing to the length of infancy, find this difficult.

I think that a successful old age is easiest for those who have strong impersonal interests involving appropriate activities. It is in this sphere that long experience is really fruitful, and it is in this sphere that the wisdom born of experience can be excised without being oppressive. Ti si no use telling grownup children not to make mistakes,

both because they will not believe you, and because mistakes are incapable of impersonal interests, you may find that your life will be empty unless you concern yourself with your children and grandchildren. In that case you must realize that while you can still render them material services, such as making then an allowance or knitting them jumpers, you must not expect that they will enjoy your company.

Some old people are oppressed by the fear of death. In the young there is a justification for this feeling. Young men who have reason to fear that they will be killed in battle may justifiably6 feel bitter in the thought that they have been cheated of the best things that life has to offer. But in an old man who has known human joys and sorrows, and has achieved whatever work it was in him to do, the fear of death is somewhat abject and ignoble. The best way to overcome it –so at least it seems to me – is to make your interests gradually wider and more

impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego recede, and your life becomes increasingly merged in the universal life.

An individual human existence should be like a river –small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being. The man who, in old age, can see his life in this way, will not suffer from the fear of death, since the things he cares for will continue. And if, with the decay of vitality, weariness increases, the thought of rest will not unwelcome. I should wish to die while still at work , knowing that others will carry on what I can no longer do and content in the thought that what was possible has been done.

The Beat Salesman in the World

Harry saw an ad in a window. It said: "Wanted. The Best Sales man in the World. Top Pay."

" I' m a great salesman." Harry told himself." I can sell anything. I'll go in and ask for that job."

He went into the building and spoke to the manager.

"I'm the best salesman in the world," he said. "Give me the job. "

"You must prove you're the best," the manager said.

"I'll pass every test you give me." Harry told him.

"Good."

The manager took a box of candy out of his desk .

"Last week, I bought a thousand boxes of this candy. If you

can sell them all before the end of the week, you can have the job.

"That's easy," Harry said.

He took the box of candy and left the off ice.

Every day and all day, he went from shop to shop, trying to sell boxes of the candy .

He couldn't sell one.

The candy was so bad he couldn't even give it away.

At the end of the week he went back to the manager.

"I'm sorry, sir, " he said," I was wrong about myself . I'm not the best salesman in the world, but I know who is.

"Oh," said the manager. "Who?"

"The person who sold you a thousand boxes of this candy, " Harry said.
