Old friends

They finish your sentences, they remember the cat that ran away when you were twelve, and they tell you the truth when you’ve had a bad haircut. But mostly, they are always there for you —whether it’s in person or 36 late night phone calls — in good times and 37 . But as the years pass, it becomes increasingly 38 to see each other, to make new memories. 39 , my high school friends and I promised long ago not to let this happen. We promised to have reunions.

A few months ago, we met up for a two-day 40 in the American Southwest. We grew up together in Maine and have said for years that we should have a(n) 41 event, yet it’s often put off or 42 due to schedule conflicts. Not this year.

The weekend 43 long talks by the pool, wonderful meals, and a hike that brought the entire group to 44 . Not tears of sadness or anger, but an outpouring of emotion over the complete wonderment that we can be this close —twelve years after graduation —with such physical 45 between us. It’s heartbreaking that we can’t spend our days together in the same neighborhood, walking the same streets, reading the same newspaper at the same coffee

shop. But that’s 46 . Grown-up life.

Most 47 is the group’s adaptability to one another. The time we spend 48 is non-existent. No need to get reacquainted (重新熟悉), we jump back in the saddle (车座) and it’s as comfortable as ever. Old friends —friends with an ever-present 49 of support and sisterhood, friends that know each other innately (天生地) — are hard to come by and yet we remain as 50 today as we were, years ago, giggling (咯咯地笑) in the back row of Mr. McKechnie’s 9th grade math class.

Life today, 51 , is no math class. Our world is full of 52 , full of fear. Y et it 53 me — now, more than ever — how important it is that we stay 54 . We may have questions about our future, but we have true faith in our past, and though this 55 of friends has come to a close, we are already drawing up plans for the next one.

A U.S. dad quit his job, giving up a massive salary, after his 10-year-old daughter gave him a 22-point list outlining all the events he missed so far during the year. As the CEO of the $2 trillion global investment fund PIMCO, Mohamed El-Erian shocked the finance industry when he quit in January.

El-Erian said it was about a year ago when he was repeatedly asking his daughter to brush her teeth, but she wasn’t listening. When he asked her why, she resp onded with a list of 22 milestones he had missed: like the first day of school and the first soccer game of the season.

“And the school year wasn’t yet over,” El-Erian wrote. “I felt awful and got defensive: I had a good excuse for each missed event! Travel, important meetings, and urgent phone call, sudden

to-dos. But it dawned on me that I was missing an infinitely more important point. My work-life balance had gotten out of whack, and the imbalance was hurting my very special relationship with my daughte r. I was not making enough time for her.” El-Erian explained he was struggling with the same thing so many parents do—work-life balance.

Dads who are quitting their profit-making jobs to improve work-life balance is a subject that is getting more traction as some high-profile executive have recently written about their experiences.

Last month, former MongoDB CEO Max Schireson wrote a blog post for Time about his decision to step down from the company’s top job. He wrote that he struggled to make time for his three children because he was flying around half a million kilometres a year for work.

“I was not with my kids when our puppy was hit by a car, or when my son had an emergency surgery,” Schireson wrote.

On an overnight flight to Texas he woke up in Arizona to discover the plane made an emergency landing and some traumatized crew members had to be replaced. He decided it was time to address his work-life balance.

Quitting is something El-Erian and Schireson were financially able to do, but El-Erian recognizes most people don’t have this luxury. He hopes companies will pay attention to improving work-life balance for their employees.

El-Erian now manages “a portfolio of part-time jobs” that don’t require as much travel. He alternates mornings with his wife taking their daughter to school and he often picks her up from school.

“So far, it’s been the right decision for me,” he wrote. “I’m so grateful that this is providing me greater opportunity to experience key moments in my daughte r’s life before they’re all too quickly gone.”

58. El-Erian resigned from PIMCO mainly because ________.

A. his daughter has been missing him badly

B. he was getting bored with the endless flights

C. he hoped to get his daughter to listen to her

D. he wanted to experience his daughter’s milestones

59. What does the underlined part “most people don’t have this luxury” probably mean?

A. Most people don’t like their jobs.

B. Most people have to work for financial security.

C. Not all dads have a 10-year-old daughter.

D. Not all dads face the problem of work-life balance.

60. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. It’s never too late to see children grow up healthily.

B. Many working parents can balance their career and family life well.

C. CEOs are occupied with work and have no time for their family.

D. Parent s’ love cannot be replaced by money or jobs.

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move s imilar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered

animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should die out, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be ground breaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction (灭绝). I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a rese arch that is very much needed.”

61. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.

A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

B. save endangered animals from dying out

C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study

D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

62. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of

________.

A. available panda eggs

B. host animals

C. qualified researchers

D. enough money

63. The best title for the passage may be _______.

A. China’s Success in Pandas Cloning

B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

D. China —the Native Place of Pandas Forever

64. From the passage we know that _______.

A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog

B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit

C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches

D. about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century

D

In January 2012, our company was hiring a new manager and my manager encouraged me to apply for it. It would be a major promotion for me, and she said she believed I could do it.

However, I didn’t think I could do it at all. In fact, I was struck with fear every time I thought

about applying for a job. I thought of all the reasons I wouldn’t be fit for the job, such as it required too much travel, I had a four-month-old son, I was taking care of him all day long, my husband already moved around for his job, I wasn’t sleeping well with a newborn baby, and so on. So I decided there was no possible way I could take on a new job at this time in my life.

I went home that night and told my husband what I thought. To my surprise, he disagreed completely. Go for it, he said. He encouraged me to talk with the hiring manager to see if we could coordinate (协调) travel times between his schedule and mine. He also said he would work fewer hours while I was travelling and take care of our son. He was certain that the manager would be supportive.

I kept his words in my mind and asked more about the job. The hiring manager didn’t dismiss me as I’d feared. In fact, she was receptive to all my requests. I started to feel better, and my interview went great. But I still didn’t mention the breastfeeding (哺乳). I felt that I was a long shot for the role and was sure that having a newborn would knock me out of the running.

Finally, I got the job. I was overjoyed and so proud that I had got the opportunity. However, reality set in quickly. I was traveling across the country, but I did not want to stop breastfeeding. I found so much joy to get in touch with my baby through that experience, and I didn’t want to give it up. And I figured our useful ways to pump on the road, in hotel rooms, in the bathroom next to the conference room --- anywhere I could.

Then, just when I thought I was starting to get the hang of it, my manager asked me to travel alone to Brazil. My heart sank. There was no way I could leave the country for so long without my son, especially before he was used to feeding from a bottle. I didn’t want to approach my manager about it because I was so afraid of looking weak. But I had put it off long enough. Then I approached her and told her the truth about my fears.

My manager said it was okay that I was having trouble balancing everything. She agreed that I could have less international travel while I was breastfeeding. The conversation was easier than I ever thought. After it was over, I wished I hadn’t put it off for so long. My manager was willing to work with me, and I didn’t have to lose this special time with my son. It was like a huge weight off my mind.

Now I know that accepting my job --- and speaking up --- is one of the best things I have ever done. I’m so glad I didn’t overthink things or count myself out. Instead I just went for it, and it all turned out okay. Life is never easy, and I’m still learning to balance my job and my family. I learned that I have so much more support form my family and my coworkers than I ever thought. Sometimes, all you need to do to get that support is asking.

I can’t believe I almost let the chance pass by me because I thought I couldn’t do it. The truth was, I couldn’t do it --- alone.

How Self-Acceptance Leads to Happiness Within

Finding acceptance is a natural desire of most people. When we are young, it is important to us to be accepted by others. To do this, we will often adopt the views and interests of the others rather than develop our own.

Over time, however, we have the opportunity to learn to accept ourselves. People who have done this are confident in their true abilities; they do not feel the need to impress other people. They are concerned with whether their actions produce worthwhile results rather than with how they are seen by others.

Less confident people constantly agree with everything others suggest, for fear of having their own ideas rejected. Defensive people are also usually unconfident; in an attempt to hide their unconfidence, they blame others.

C onfident people do not give up when faced with a difficult situation; they say “I can” rather than “I can't.” Knowing that each day is an opportunity to use their talents to acquire good health, good friendships, and great happiness, they always put their best foot forward. Gradually they can appreciate the differences between themselves and other people.

Recognizing the details that we cannot change about ourselves helps us grow personally, so why waste energy complaining about being short? Instead of focusing on personal characteristics we are not satisfied with, we ought to focus more on what we are good at.

Such expressions as “Love yourself” and “Be true to your own self” are about self-acceptance, as well as honesty and morality. We should consider them to be good advice, and treat them as

第六部分书面表达参考范文:

Dear editor,

As students of Senior 2, it means that we should not only study harder than before but also handle all kinds of relations well.

My parents always take good care of me. I think I will work hard in return for what they have done for me. I should respect and love them. If I have some problems in my life, I should seek advice from them. Our teachers are always devoted to their work and it is needless to say that we should look up to them. We should not hesitate to ask them for help wh en we can’t solve the problems in our studies. Communicating with our teachers can often benefit us a lot. As for classmates, there is no doubt that we should get on well with each other and help each other. Being polite is also necessary. Treat others in the way we want to be treated.

In a word, I ought to show respect for others and offer necessary help when they are in need or in trouble.

Best regards!

Li Hua
