一. 组合题(共20题)

1. One answer to the question of land shortage was suggested by a committee some years ago. A city was to he built at sea, housing 30,000 people.

The suggestion was to shape the city like a harbor. The outer wall of the harbor would stand on steel columns resting on the seabed. Naturally this could only be where the water was fairly shallow. The flats would all face inwards, and would be made of concrete and glass、The glass would be specially made and colored to control the heat and strong light from the sun. The planners called this water the lake.

The water inside this man-made harbor would be calm,On it would be floating lands carrying more buildings:a hospital, two theaters,a museum, and an art exhibition hall and a church. On one of the islands would be a special plant,to take the salt out of seawater and turn it into fresh water.

People living in the city could move around on small boats driven by electricity,so there would be no air pollution from the burning of petrol. There would be platforms outside the main wall for ships bringing supplies. People could also travel to the mainland by motorboat or water plane.

2. After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony.

Nobel’s original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from $30,000 to $125,000.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges’ decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes.

3. During the American War of Independence, women were involved in the active fighting in three ways. First,as members of a distinct branch of the Continental Army referred to as “Women of the Army,”women staffed field hospitals and acted as military support in such roles as water carriers. 4. When people discuss education they insist that preparation for examination is not the main purpose. They are right in theory, but in practice, we all realize how important exams are. What do you know about the examination taken at English secondary schools? Here are a few facts about some of them.

Pupils who remain at school until they are sixteen normally take what is called the General Certificate (证书) of Education at Ordinary Level. The examination is a subject examination. This means you can take a number of subjects. Some pupils take as many as ten. The more subjects the better chance a pupil has of getting a job on leaving school. For short, this examination is called G.C.E. “O” level. This certificate in five or six subjects is, if you like, the required starting point of some types of work and also for many types of professional training.

Pupils who remain at school until they are eighteen or nineteen generally take the General Certificate of Education at Advanced Level –popularly known as G.C.E. “A” level. This examination is usually taken in two, three or four specialized subjects. And because it is for the specialist you have to study each s ubject intensively. A pupil who has passed two or three “A” levels can apply for admission to a university.

These two examinations are written ones. Many English children take one or the other or both. Not all of them pass.

At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago --- so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction.

It is one of the working languages at international meetings, business, science and other fields. The differences between American English and British English are not very great. For example, centre, license, color and travelled are spelt as center, license, color and traveled in American English. In America “cock, rubber, ill, holiday, lorry, post…” are called” rooster, eraser, sick, vacation, truck, mail…”. But people f rom the two countries can still understand each other easily. There are only a very small number of differences in grammar(语法) between American English and British English. The most important differences are in spoken English. For example, Americans pronounce “tomato” differently from English people. Y ou may wonder “Which is correct?” The answer is that it does not matter. Y ou should speak either American English or British English. But do not try to speak both at the same time. 26. When was English only spoken in England? B A. About the 6th century B.
