Unit 4 Making the news

新题型—短文语法填空

Have you ever started sneezing when eating peanuts, getting rash(皮疹)on your skin or feeling your heart starting to beat faster?Statistics show that around 12 million Americans suffer from food allergy, with 6.9 million allergic to seafood and 3.3 million allergic to peanuts or tree nuts.

Food allergic symptoms occur immediately after having an allergen food. The food is treated as harmful to the body,by the immune system, which defends our organism from harmful external attacks. Here are a few guidelines about things you should know and how to put them into practice to prevent food allergies and eat healthily.

When buying food, read attentively the labels on the food products. All manufacturers according to the new Food Allergen and Consumer Act must clearly list all the elements of the product including the 8 food allergens even if they are present in very small amounts.Don't buy these products, even if they might be cheaper.

Parents should be very cautious when preparing food. The table and cooking tools used need to be clean. It is recommended to cook the food of the allergic person in the first place.

Food allergic persons should have a little patience. In certain people, the allergy disappears gradually.Visit your doctor at regular times to find about the progress of your allergies instead of having strict diets every day.

Keep a diary to note the foods that worsen your food allergies, new experiences and changes that you notice.Being tempted to have a piece of cake can be very dangerous.Your health is much more worth than it.Always think about the efforts people around you are putting to create an allergic-free environment for you.

Allergic persons should avoid consuming cakes that are not homemade and should always carry some snacks on them.Buying food in restaurants is risky.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.

Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.

In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right band. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.

“our brain has billions of nerve ceils. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,”Tavell a says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control device s.”

The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.

Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that

interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”

He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit front. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.

1.BCI is a technology that can

A. help to update computer systems

B. link the human brain with computers

C. help the disabled to recover

D. control a person's thoughts

2. How" did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?

A. By controlling his muscles.

B. By talking to the machine.

C. By moving his hand.

D. By using his mind.

3. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?

A. scalp →computer →cap →wheelchair

B. computer →cap →scalp →wheelchair

C. scalp →cap →computer →wheelchair

D. cap →compute →scalp →wheelchair

4. The team will test with real patients to

A. make profits from them

B. prove the technology useful to them

C. make them live longer

D. learn about their physical condition

5. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center

B. New Findings About How the Human Brain Works

C. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled

D. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

【文章大意】科普说明文。本文介绍了BCI脑机接口技术,它是帮助残疾人向机器输送指令。【参考方案】1---5、BDCBC

四、七选五

(2015·东北三省三校第二次联合模拟)

After the popularity of the Ice Bucket Challenge, another challenge now is hot in India. Indians give rice to their poor neighbors for a charity(慈善) which is called “Rice Bucket Challenge”. __1__ It is about giving a bucket of rice to someone who is in need and taking a picture named “Rice Bucket Challenge” to share online. The aim of the activity is to help the poor and hungry people in India, and the movement's Facebook page has so far clocked up more than 50,000 likes. __2__ The activity was started by Manju Latha Kalanidhi, a 38-year-old journalist, who thought the Ice Bucket Challenge was a little strange. She said, “Hunger is a disease anybody would connect.” The challenge has gained a lot of suppor t with students signing up in Indian Insitute of Management, and more and more people join in it. __3__

India is the world's second-biggest rice consumer, with a storage of 21.2 million tons of the grains. __4__ It has suffered with mass hunger, and last year was ranked 63 of 78 countries on the International Food Policy Research Institute's global hunger index. How to participate in this activity? First, pick up a bucket of rice from your home and give it to the neighboring people who are in need.__5__ At last, invite online all your friends and ask them to take up the challenge. It is important to post back on Facebook because it will inspire all your friends to come forward. All

the people get together and make a difference!

A.Besides, hand the rice bucket over to other people who are in need.

B.It is not an activity involving dumping a bucket of rice on someone's head.

C.The activity raises the public awareness and charitable donations to agriculture.

D.The AirAsia India airline says its staff including senior management will join.

E.Then, take a picture and post it on Facebook with “Rice Bucket Challenge”.

F.But it is far from enough for this country.

G.The initial inspiration came from the ice bucket challenge.

5.E根据前句用表示顺序的词“First,...”,后句用了“At last...”描述,因此这句应该选E,然后照张相片,发到脸谱网上,并且注明“米桶挑战”字样。

B Here’s one number to keep in mind during your next cell phone conversation: 50. A new experiment shows that spending 50 minutes with an active phone pressed up to the ear increases activity in the brain. This brain activity probably doesn't make you smarter. When cell phones are on, they emit (发出) energy in the form of radiation that could be harmful, especially after years of cell phone usage. Scientists don't know yet whether cell phones are bad for the brain. Studies like this one are attempting to find it out. The 47 participants in the experiment may have looked a little strange. Each one had two Samsung cell phones attached to his or her head — one on each ear. The phone on the left ear was off. The phone on the right ear played a message for 50 minutes, but the participants couldn't hear it because the sound was off. With this set-up, the scientists could be sure they were studying brain activity from the phone itself, and not brain activity due to listening and talking during a conversation. After 50 minutes with two phones strapped to their heads, the participants were given PET scans. The PET scan showed that the left side (the side with the phone turned off) of each participant's brain hadn't changed during the experiment. The right side of the brain, however, had used more glucose, which is a type of sugar that provides fuel to brain cells. These right-side brain cells were using almost as much glucose as the brain uses when a person is talking. This suggests th at the brain cells there were active ― even without the person hearing anything. That activity, the scientists say, was probably caused by radiation from the phone. Henry Lai, who works at the University of Washington in Seattle, is uncomfortable with the data related to cell phones. Holding a cell phone to your ear during a conversation is “not really safe,” Lai told Science News. Lai is a bioengineer at the University of Washington in Seattle. He wrote an article about the new study for a journal, but he did not work on the study. Bioengineers bring together ideas from engineering and biology. For those who don't want to wait to find out for sure whether cell phones are bad for the brain, there are ways to talk more safely. You can have short and sweet conversations, use a

训练4 议论文 A (2016·威海二模) It's Nice to be Home 1 I have been fortunate enough to make trips to many countries. They were wonderful adventures filled with new sights and experiences. And my wife and I have another trip in the planning stages. We're home now and have settled back into our daily routine of life. 2 I find that when I am at home, particularly for a while when we have just returned from a trip,I feel very comfortable.Perhaps it is because everything around me is familiar and the daily routine is so much the same I can move through it almost without thinking. 3 Perhaps it is because we can have meals at home instead of always being in restaurants, although it's nice to let someone else do the cooking, and because I can sleep in my own bed. There are times I think it would be nice to simply stop travelling and stay home and I'm sure I would be very comfortable if that were to happen. 4 Yet I guess I am probably a restless soul because I know that after I have been home for a while I will start to think about other places we might go and other things we want to see.We will travel again and we feel fortunate to be able to do so. 5 Still, one of the best things about travelling for me is coming home.I'm very comfortable here at home even if it is difficult to say exactly why. A.I like to travel very much. B.I enjoy local food while travelling. C.I like being home, for whatever reason. D.Perhaps it is because our friends are here. E.And I enjoy my daily life at home so much. F.We want to see as much of the world as we can.
