很喜欢你的问题。你的理解很到位。所有的tyrants都是dictators,tyrant 有感情色彩,dictator比较中性。前巴基斯坦总统General Pervez Musharraff 穆沙拉夫将军虽然假模假样地也经过了选举,但是却似举世皆知的dictator,Raul Castro and Fidel Castro 也都是独裁者,但这几个人都算不上tyrants。Dictator可以用在口语中,例如:My boss is a dictator who makes everyone work overtime. (我的老板是个独裁者,他让所有的员工都加班加点。)Mao即是tyrant 又是dictator,他杀人无数,奇怪的是今天却不知道有多少中国人还迷恋他。原因之一是今天的贪官太多,而他不贪。这个Mao把中国的权力都贪完了,现在有人却说他不贪,真是匪夷所思。

另外几个表示独裁者的词是:缅甸的独裁军政府叫military junta;还有autocrat,这个词学术味浓一点;despot,也是独裁者的意思,但贬义色彩较低一点,例如普鲁士的君王,又叫开明君王(the enlightened despot ),Frederick II of Prussia这个despot受德国人尊重;还有totalitarian, 集权,是political science里用得比较多的词。

是要自由,还是要次序?他们难作取舍。但随之而来的是一种新的民族主义。(或者,民族主义也随之产生了新的含义。)

我的理解不一定对,仅作参考。
