1. Greeting Strangers

A: Hi, there. My name’s Paul Brown. I’m from the United States.

B: Nice to meet you, Paul. My name’s Kelly Cook. You can call me Kelly. I’m from Canada.

A: Nice to meet you, too, Kelly. Canada is a beautiful country!

(1)Hi, there. 你好。

【Kim’s Note】This is a very casual and common way to greet someone. However, guys use this greeting to girls much more frequently than girls use it to guys. It is a little bit flirtatious because it sounds as though someone has just caught your eye for attention. But if you want to get a guy’s attention, I highly recommend this greeting!

(2)Nice to meet you.

I’m glad/pleased to meet you. 或Nice meeting you.

Nice to meet you, too.

或Same here.

A: I don’t think we’ve met before. My name’s Sam.

B: No, I don’t think so either. Nice to meet you. I’m Ann.

A: Hello! Are you a friend of Bill’s?

B: Yes. My name’s Sally. And you are…

A: I’m his roommate, David. I’ve heard so much about you from Bill.

A: Excuse me, but aren’t you the President of the United States?

B: As a matter of fact I am.

A: Hi, beautiful day, isn’t it?

B: It sure is.

【Kim’s Note】 This is probably the most common greeting among strangers. Don’t let an opportunity to speak English pass you by because you don’t know what to say in response to this common greeting!

由于我们以前的中学课本上关于问候的用语只有“How are you?”“Fine, thank you, and you?”“I’m fine, too.” 有一个中国学生在车站看到有一个外国朋友,心想这是一个难得的机会可以卖弄一下自己的英语,于是在心里反复操练“How are you?”“Fine, thank you, and you?”“I’m fine, too.” “Beautiful day, isn’t?” 呢,他应该问“ How are you?”

(1)My name’s…

(2)I’m from…

(3)Are you a friend of…?

(4)Excuse me, but aren’t you…?

(5)I’ve heard so much about you from…

(1)I don't think we’ve met before.

(2)I’ve heard so much about you.

【Kim’s Note】Even if this isn’t exactly true, it will make the person you meet feel very special. Everyone likes to think they are well known, or popular. Just be careful, in case the person quickly asks you what you’ve heard. You can always respond with a safe, but vague answer. For example:

A: I’ve heard so much about you.

B: Really? What have you heard?

A: Oh, a lot of good things.

(3)Hi, beautiful day, isn’t it?

【Culture Note】

It is common to comment on the weather as a means of greeting people, for example, ‘Beautiful day, isn’t it?’ But it is rare to simply make a plain descriptive statement, such as ‘It’s raining today, isn’t it?’ It is much more normal to add some kind of opinion or evaluation and say, for example, ‘It’s raining incredibly hard today, isn’t it?’

而是通常加上一些观点或评价,例如“It’s raining incredibly hard today, isn’t it?”。

A: I hope you don’t mind my asking, but haven’t we met somewhere before?

B: Oh, we attended Crazy English Camp together three months ago.

A: Oh.Right! That’s it. How is everything with you?

A: Hi, great party, isn’t it?

B: Yeah. We’re having a great time. How about your friends?

A: Oh, they are having fun, too.

(1)I hope you don’t mind my asking, but haven’t we met somewhere before?

【Kim’s Note】This is a polite and clever way to meet someone! If you think a person looks interesting, you can try this sentence to break the ice and strike up a conversation.

(2)How is everything with you?

(3)We’re having a great time/having fun.

(1)as a matter of fact 事实上

* I was just going to call you, as a matter of fact, I just dialed your number.

* As a matter of fact, I do study English at Beijing University.

* As a matter of fact, everything in the store is fifty percent off today.

* As a matter of fact, we welcome foreign investment.

(2)break the ice

* Don’t be shy. Just go over and say hello to her. She is probably just waiting for you to break the ice.

* I hate going to parties. I never know how to break the ice and start conversations with people.

【Kim’s Note】This is a very important phrase and skill in American life. Every time you go to a meeting or a conference in America you will need this ability.

American or British. I completely disagree! I have heard people use this greeting my whole life all over the United States. So, I consider it one of China’s great contributions to international communication. Use it and be proud of your English and your Chinese culture at the same time!

【Culture Note】

The most common conversation you will probably have in English is a greeting conversation. Most opportunities to speak English will begin with a greeting! Be sure you know many different ways of greeting people and the cultural differences behind them! These are a few differences that are worth noting.

(1)If someone asks their colleague or friend whether they have had lunch or not, the person wants to know “yes” or“no”. If the reply is“no”, the person will probably go on to suggest that they go and have lunch together. In other words, this kind of question is often a lead-in to a suggestion or invitation. It cannot be used simply to greet a person, as is normal in Chinese.

(2)Another common way of greeting in Chinese is to ask ‘Where are you going?’ Foreigners living in China, who are not yet familiar with the Chinese culture, often complain about being asked such a question. Some even complain that their room attendants are SPIES because the attendants regularly greet them with ‘Where are you going?’. They do not recognize it as a Chinese greeting!

(3)Another common way of greeting in Chinese is to state what somebody is doing. For example, if you meet someone who is obviously going to the dining

hall, you may make a comment like ‘Going to dinner!’ Often in English this sounds a little strange because the comment seems to state the obvious. In such situations, it is possible to simply greet the person with a common greeting like ‘Hello’. But if you wish to add something extra, you could say, ‘Hello. Have a nice dinner!’ This is much more usual than simply describing what the person is doing. Now for example: At 12:00, two colleagues passing each other on the way out to lunch, but seeing each other the first time that day.

A: Hi, Kim. How’s it going?

B: Not bad. Have a nice lunch!

7. Introducing Oneself

【Kim’s Note】It takes a lot of confidence to introduce yourself to someone you don’t know! Self-introduction is even a challenge for native speakers. Take a deep breath, put on a happy, smiling face and just do it. Most people are relieved that someone else has broken the ice and taken the first step. You will undoubtedly be greeted with an enthusiastic response.

然而一时间又找不到合适的替换者,在情急之下,来了一个“一人分饰两角”,李阳老师拿着话筒在幕后用地道的英语说:“It’s a great honor to have teacher Li here today.”

【Kim’s Note】 Little expressions like these can have a big impact on your English. They really can add to your ability to express yourself accurately and authentically.

9. Saying Goodbye for the Day短暂分别

A: Well, Take it easy. See you later.

B: You too. Bye.

A: Well, Jack, I’ve got to go now.

B: Have a nice weekend. See you Monday.

A: Goodbye and good luck.

A: It’s time I met my girlfriend. I really have to go now.

B: Have fun. Goodbye.

A: Bye-bye.

【Kim’s Note】“Bye-bye” is baby talk for “goodbye,” and there is a cliche using it as a noun: to go bye-bye is baby talk for “to go for a walk, to leave, to go away.” Today “bye-bye” is casual for saying goodbye. I never said “bye-bye” until I came to China! Now I say it all the time and my American friends tease me about my “baby talk!”

10. Seeing Someone off 送别

【Kim’s Note】Don’t let this situation intimidate you. It really is a great chance to show off not only your English, but also your international qualifications. Teacher Li and I have traveled to several countries and the problem of how to see someone off seems to be international. I always feel awkward as I watch Korean and Japanese people bowing and just saying “OK, you go now.”

A: Goodbye, Mr. Smith. I hope you’ll have a pleasant trip home. [hug]

B: Thanks. I had a wonderful time here.

B: I wish you didn’t have to leave so soon. Have a nice trip!

A: Thanks. I’m looking forward to seeing you again soon.

B: Me, too. Take care. [Hug]

A: Oh, they are calling the passengers to board the plane now. Thank you so much for seeing me off. Goodbye. [Hug]

B: Goodbye. Have a good flight! Say hello to your wife for me.

A: Thank you. Let’s keep in touch.

【Kim’s note】It is very common for western people to exchange hugs when saying goodbye. Especially before traveling! All of these dialogues would be said with a hug!

11. Saying Goodbye after a Visit

A: I’d like that. Thanks again. Goodbye.

(9)Have a good flight!

My only hobby in life is collecting beautiful sentences! Long time no see. 2. A: How are you doing? B: I'm doing great. / Super. Yourself? A: Couldn't be better. And you?”“I'm fine, too. Thank you. Bye-bye.” 3. How is your business? 4. How's your family? How's everything? Are you as busy as before? [1] I can't stand my poor English! I want to improve my situation! I want to change my life. I don't want to let my parents down! I don't ever want to let my country down! Most importantly, I don't want to let myself down! [2] I want to speak perfect English! I want to understand all kinds of accents! I want to write beautiful articles. I want to read thousands of books! I want to translate freely between Chinese and English. I want to be the master of the world's two most important languages: Chinese and English. [1] Please don't care how poorly or how well you speak, only care about catching the chances to speak! Enjoy losing face. Just forget about your face. The more you speak, the better your English will become. The more mistakes you make, the more progress you will make. You must enjoy speaking poor English, because speaking is the only thing that will lead you towards success. Don't give up. Just try your best. [2] Every time you move your mouth, your memory will deepen, your muscles will strengthen. You can make it.
