Every winter, snow blankets the mountains east of Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. And every winter, moose(驼鹿)wander into Anchorage in search of food. The deeper the snow, the greater the number of moose.

In the winter of 1982-1983, there were record snowfalls. A wildlife expert estimated that there were 1,100 moose wandering the streets of Anchorage, a city of 173,000 people. That amounts to one moose for every 163 people in the city. Normally, moose are easygoing animals, even rather gentle. Most people in Anchorage say that the only harm the moose do is to destroy thousands of dollars worth of shrubs(灌木)by chewing on them. But as the long winters continue, the physical condition of the moose grows worse. Some then easily became mad.

Small children run the greatest risk of getting hurt because they may decide to tease an angry moose. A full-grown moose is not a good target for teasing. It can stand seven feet tall at the shoulders and weigh 1,200 pounds.

Anyone who meets a moose should lie down in a snow bank, if possible, and remain quiet. The chance of a moose coming over and kicking or stepping on a person is very slight. However, a moose that is chased(追赶)is likely to chase back.

There are about 150,000 moose in all of Alaska. That number is increasing fast, some hunting is permitted near Anchorage, but not in the city itself. The automobile is more dangerous to moose than hunters. Many moose have been killed by cars on roads in Anchorage area. Roads that are unlit and ice-covered contribute to the high rate of moose-auto collisions.

24. What do we know about moose in Anchorage from the first paragraph?

A. A smaller number of them now exist in Anchorage.

B. A growing number of them search for food in Anchorage.

C. Fewer of them wander into Anchorage for food with deeper snow.

D. Many more of them come for food in Anchorage with thicker snow.

25. What is the greatest danger to the moose?

A. Automobiles.

B. Little children.

C. Hunters.

D. Cold weather.

26. Which of the following best describes some moose in long winters?

A. Hungry.

B. Angry.

C. Quiet.

D. Friendly.

27. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Winter food for moose.

B. Dangers to moose in Alaska.

C. The annual visits of moose to Anchorage.

D. How moose are protected in Anchorage.

C

In our daily lives, we use hundreds of different things. Everything we do involves stuff (东西)in one way or another. But where does it all come from and go wh en we’re done with it?

The first step in the life cycle of stuff is taking the world’s natural resources. To make products, people cut down trees, blow up mountains, and suck up clean water. Actually in the past 30 years, we’ve used up a third of the world’s natural resources making stuff.

Production is the next step where the natural resources are sent to factories. There are over 100,000 chemicals in use in factories today, whose long-term effects on human health are still unknown.

Once produced, stuff needs to get into our homes. This is where the distribution step comes into play. To make as much money as possible, retail(零售的)stores keep their prices low to attract customers and stores pay their workers very little. Factories are often in third world countries, where companies pay their employees even less.

The consumption step is where we use the things we’ve bought. A study has shown that 99% of the things we buy are no longer used after six months. Two reasons for this. First, many items are low-quality products specifically designed to break quickly. The other reason is our own perceptions(看法). Thanks to advertising, fashion, and the media, we are constantly throwing away perfectly good items to use newer, cooler ones.

The final step is disposal. This is where we throw out all the stuff we no longer want. In most cases, things are buried in landfills. In other cases, we put stuff into incinerators, which burn up our trash.

So how can we break the terrible cycle? Start by simply making better choices. For example, only buy from environmentally responsible companies. When you can, buy second-hand items. But above all, simply buy less.

28. What can be learned from the passage?

A. The Earth’s natural resources will run out in 30 years.

B. Quite a few chemicals in use do harm to the human body.

C. Nearly all the stuff bought will be cast away after half a year’s use.

D. Most of the unwanted stuff is dealt with by burning up.

29. How do retail stores keep competitive prices and still make money?

A. By reducing wages costs.

B. By tricking customers.

C. By selling lower-quality items.

D. By hiring fewer employees.

30. What does the writer advise us to do in the last paragraph?

A. To make plans before buying.

B. To recycle unusable stuff.

C. To buy green products.

D. To be content with what we have.

31. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Let’s live simply

B. Too much stuff

C. Far from satisfaction

D. Why not recycle more

D

Going to classes in Tai Chi for 12 weeks significantly reduced symptoms of the blues. The meditative(冥想的)practice, which has been used for more than 1,000 years, combines deep breathing and slow and gentle movements.

Fifty volunteer Chinese-American participants were accepted to take part in the study. They all had depression and were not receiving any other forms of treatment then. They were placed at random in three groups. The first took part in Tai Chi, the second received educational therapy and the third was a control group. Those given Tai Chi were taught basic traditional movements and practiced three times a week. All 17 volunteers in Tai Chi reported significantly greater improvement in depression symptoms than the other two groups.

Follow-up assessment after six months showed sustained(持续的)improvement, the report published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry states. Lead author Professor Albert Yeung said if the findings are confirmed in other trials, it could be used as a primary treatment. While he said that the results of the study were important due to many adults of Chinese American ethnicity(族群)deciding not to seek help with depression. Professor Yeung added: “Finding Tai Chi can be effective is particularly significant because it is culturally accepted by this group of patients who tend to avoid conventional psychiatric(精神病的)treatment.”

Previous research has shown Tai Chi makes the brain bigger and improves memory and thinking—possibly delaying the onset of dementia(痴呆症). Tai Chi has also been linked with reducing high blood pressure and relieving symptoms of cancer, heart failure and other diseases.

32. What can we learn about the participants for the research from the second paragraph?

A. They were from China and America.

B. They were divided into 3 groups on purpose.

C. They were suffering depression at the time.

D. They were all fond of practicing Tai Chi.

33. What is Professor Yeung’s attitude towards Tai Chi?

A. Doubtful.

B. Supportive.

C. Negative.

D. Unknown.

34. Which of the following can replace the underline word “ onset” in the last paragraph ?

A. outbreak

B. cure

C. test

D. change

35. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Fewer people have depression now.

B. Depression will make the brain bigger.

C. Americans with depression avoid seeking help.

D. Tai Chi can help treat some diseases.
