Easy Listening

Students should be jealous. Not only do babies get to doze their days away, but they’ve also mastered the fine art of learning in

their sleep.

B y the time babies are one year old, they can recognize a lot of sounds and even simple words. Marie Cheour at the University of Turku in Finland suspected that they might progress this fast because they learn language while they sleep as well as w h e n they are awake.

To test the theory, Cheour and their colleagues studied 45 newborn babies in the first days of their lives. They exposed all the infants to an hour of Finnish vowel sounds one that sounds like “oo”;another like “ee”and the third boundary vowel peculiar to Finnish and similar languages that sounds like something in between. E E G ( 脑电图)recording of the infants brains before and after the session showed that the newborns could not distinguish the sounds.

Fifteen of the babies then went back with their mothers, where the rest were split into two sleep-study groups. One group w as exposed throughout their night-time sleeping hours to the same three vowels, while the others listened to the other, easier-to-distinguish vowel sounds.

W h e n tested in the morning, and again in the evening, the babies w h o ’d heard the tricky boundary vowels all night showed brainwave activity indicating that they could n o w recognize this sound. They could identify the sound even w h e n its pitch was changed, while none of the other babies could pick up the boundary vowel at all.

Cheour doesn’t k n o w h o w babies accomplish this nighttime learning, but she suspects that the special ability might indicate that unlike adults, babies d o n ’t “turn off’their cerebral cortex ( 大脑皮层)while they sleep: The skill probably fades in the course of the first years of life, she adds so forget the idea that you can pick up the tricky French vowels as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it m a y not help grown-ups,Cheour is hoping to use the sleeping hours to give remedial help to babies w h o are genetically at risk of language disorders.

Cloning: F uture Perfect?

1 A clone is an exact copy of a plant or animal produced from any one cell. Since Scottish scientists reported that they had m a n aged to clone a sheep n a m e d Dolly in 1997,research into cloning has grown rapidly. In M a y 1998,scientists in Massachusetts managed to create two identical calves using cloning technology. A mouse has also been cloned successfully. But the debate over cloning humans really started w h e n Chicago physicist Richard Seed made a surprising announcement: “W e will have managed to clon e a human being within the next two years,” he told the world.

2 Seed ’s announcement provoked a lot of media attention, most of it negative. In Europe, nineteen nations have already signed an agreement ban ning h u m a n cloning and in the U S the President announced: “W e will be introducing a law to ban h u m a n cloning and m a n y states in the U S will have passed anti-cloning laws by the end of the year”.

3 M a n y researchers are not so negative about cloning. They are worried that laws banning h u m a n cloning will threaten important research. In March, The N e w England Journal of Medicine called any plan to ban research on cloning humans seriously mistaken. M a n y researchers also believe that in spite of attempts to ban it, h u m a n cloning will have b ecome routine by 2010 because it is impossible to stop the progress of science.

4 Is there reason to fear that cloning will lead to a nightmare world? The public has been bombarded ( 轰炸)with newspaper articles, television shows and films, as well as cartoons. Such information is often misleading, and makes people wonder what on earth the scientists will be doing next.

5 Within the next five to ten years scientists will probably have found a w a y of cloning humans. It could be that pretty soon w e will be able to choose the person that w e want our child to look like. But h o w would it feel to be a clone a m o n g hundreds, the anti-cloners ask Pretty cool, answer the pro-cloners

Dung to Death

Fields across Europe are contaminated with dangerous levels of the antibiotics given to farm animals. The drugs, which are in manure sprayed onto fields as fertilizers, could be getting into our food and water, helping to create a n e w generation of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs”.

The warning comes from a researcher in Switzerland w h o looked at levels of the drugs in farm slurry. 46 .

S o m e 20,000 tons of antibiotics are used in the European Union and the U S each year. Mor e than half are given to farm-animals to prevent disease and promote growth. 47 .

Most researchers assumed that humans b ecome infected with the resistant strains by eating contaminated

meat. But far more of the drugs end up in manure than in meat products, says Stephen Mueller of the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology in Dubendorf. 48 .

With millions of tons of animals manure spread onto fields of crops such as wheat and barley each year, this pathway seems an equally likely route for spreading resistance, he said. The drugs contaminate the crops, which are then eaten. 49.

Mueller is particularly concerned about a group of antibiotics called sulphonamides. 50 . His analysis found that Swiss farm manure contains a high percentage of sulphonamides; each hectare of field could be contaminated with up to 1 kilogram of the drugs. This concentration is high enough to trigger the development of resistance a m o n g bacteria. But vets are not treating the issue seriously.

There is growing concern at the extent to which drugs, including antibiotics, are polluting the environment.M a n y drugs given to humans are also excreted unchanged and are not broken d o w n by conventional sewage treatment.

A. They do not easily degrade or dissolve in water.

B. A n d manure contains especially high levels of bugs that are resistant to antibiotics he says.

C. Animal antibiotics is still an area to which insufficient attention

has been paid.

D. But recent research has found a direct link between the increased use of these farmyard drugs and the

appearance of antibiotic-resistant bugs that infect people.

E. His findings are particularly shocking because Switzerland is one of the few countries to have banned

antibiotics as growth promoters in animal dead.

F. They could also be leaching into tap water pumped from rocks beneath fertilized fields.

17. C 第2段有这样一个句子“...the time babies are one year old, they can recognize a lot of sounds and even simple words”,从“许多音”是推不出“许多元音”的,反向的推论才是成立的。

18. C 第 4 段最后一句是“while the others listened to the other, easier-to-distinguish vowel sounds”,其他的较容易区分的元音是指“0 0 ”和“ee”这两个音。

20. A 选A的依据是最后一段中的“...unlike adults, babies d o n ’t ‘turn off’their cerebral cortex while they sleep ,,。

文章最后一段有“The skill probably fades in the course of the first years of life, she adds so forget the idea that you can pick up the tricky French vowels as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it m a y not help grown-ups”,这些话都是对本题的否定。

文章的最后一句指出“while it m a y not help grown-ups,Cheour is hoping to use the sleeping hours to give remedial help to babies w h o are genetically at risk of language disorders"。

31. D 第1 段第2 句“It can help you spend m o n e y wisely”(预算帮助你聪明地花钱), 也就是说理智地消费(spend m o n e y in a reasonable way).

32. A “preparing a budget takes planning,and following a budget takes will power”意思是“准备一项预算需要计划,而执行(follow在这里是执行的意思)一项计划则需要will power ( 意志力),也就是ability to control yourself ( 控制自己的能力)”。

33. B 第 5 段讲了“Studying your records will show where overspending has occurred. It will also point out poor buying habits" ( 消费记录可以找出哪里超支了,或者可以发现一些不良购买习惯)。

34. C 从原文最后的“It is also a good idea to set aside a

small amount of m o n e y for emergencies.

36. D 从文章第1 段第 2 句“Without a car most people feel that they are poor”可以找到答案。

37. D 依据第 2 段第1 句“Henry Ford was the m a n w h o first started making cars in large numbers”。m a k e :制造,等于produce。38. C 原文“The car m a d e the United Stated a nation on wheels”说明,在美国汽车很受欢迎,汽车对

39. A 第 3 段末尾“With a car people call go anyplace without spending a lot of m o n e y ”’anyplace 连在一起写等于a n y w h e r e ,都是副词,可以直接与动词连用,但是不与介词t o连用,所以B 、 C 是错误选项。

40. C 文章最后一句“The real solution will have to be a n e w kind of car, one that does not use so much gas", 不使用很多汽油的车,当然就是gas-saving cars ( 节能汽车)了。

41. A 文章第1 段第1 句和第 2 句“Persons w h o are overweight should watch their diet carefully in order to lose pounds. The best w a y to do this is to start a weight control program”点明了本文的主要内容是“...the best w a y to d o ”,即方法问题。

43. A 依据是原文第 2 段“W h e n you have lost the weight you wish, simple items can be added to your diet so that you can maintain the weight you want”(减到理想体重以后,就可以吃一些简单的食物)。

44. A 第 1 段末尾,作者建议“ A good rule is to lose slowly.

A loss of a pound or two is plenty ”,应该慢慢地减肥,选项A ( 医生会建议你迅速减肥)是错误的。

54. D 我们知道该空的名词应出现在前文,上一句就提到“Sound Alert, is installing the alarms in a residential home...”,所以这里所要填的词也应该是the alarms。

55. B 句子前半句是说a wide range of frequencies,所以发出的应是s o u n d , 因此答案选B 。

去掉it’s... that,剩下的完整句子就是“A burst of white noise, people say ( 插入语),sounds like static on the radio”.

59. C 显然,这个空是考察常用句型“it takes / took sb. some time to do sth”。

63. D A l a r m s是主语,have already been installed 是谓语,所以要填的动词应该是分词形式做定语,所以4 个答案只有D 可能。be based o n : 以……

64. A 根据前半句的rising or falling frequencies,可以看出这句话也应该填连接词or , 表示或者。

65. A 主语they代指the alarms,后半句是说这种设备得到大笔资助。
