In December 2010, Lauren Robinson walked into science class, “My throat started closing,”she remembers. “They called an ambulance, and I had to go to the hospital.” It wasn’t the first time that Lauren had to be rushed to the hospital. That’s because Lauren, 15, has a food allergy (过敏症) Many people have food allergies. But Lauren’s allergy is much worse than most. She can’t eat food that contains milk. When she was younger, Lauren could stay safe by choosing food carefully. That changed in middle school. By eighth grade, Lauren couldn’t be in the same room with dairy products(乳制品). That’s what happened in Lauren’s science classroom. Earlier that day, students had held a pizza party. Cheese

particles(微粒) still hung in the air. Lauren never returned to school after that.

In 2011, Lauren got great news. She could go to school and stay safe by driving a robot to class. Lauren controls it from home over the Internet, using a computer. It has microphones(话筒) so that everyone can talk to Lauren too.

At first, Lauren thought that using the robto was “a weird idea”. No one went to school like that. “I kept knocking into walls at first,” says Lauren, laughing. “I’d keep falling!”But she got used to it quickly. Using the robot feels natural now. Most people know tuna(金枪鱼) only in a can but more than 50 kinds of tuna live in the world’s oceans. The largest of tuna, the bluefin, can grow almost 15 feet long and swim through the water at high speed.

For centuries, bluefin crowded the world’s waters, a top ocean predator(捕食性动物) with few enemies. But they’ve met their match in humans. More and more people find tuna delicious. Today bluefin are nearing extinction(灭绝). To save them, scientists needed to know more about their habits. But, until recently, they had no way of following these super-fast animals of the sea.

Scientists came up with a project called Tagging of Pacific Predator(TOPP). Over 10 years, they

attached (固定) electronic recorders to more than 4,000 animals. The recorders recorded information about amounts of light and salt, and even the animal’s heartbeat and body temperature. For the first time, researchers were able to follow their travel across the Pacific and study their movements in the warm waters off the California coast.

The journeys of the bluefin really surprised the TOPP team. When bluefin are two years old, they leave the waters off Japan and travel all the way east to California, a distance of more than 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometres). Then they move up and down the US coast with the seasons.

And scientists in another project, the History of Marine Animal Population (HMAP), found that 100 years ago, the ocean off Scandinavia were full of bluefin every summer. And very few people fished for them. Then, in the 1920s, new fishing techniques made it easier to catch large numbers of tuna. More people began to eat and enjoy tuna, and the business of the tuna fishery continued to grow. A short 25 years later, fishers were catching 10,000 tons of tuna each year.

Looking at past and present numbers, scientists think that 90 percent of all large predatory fish, including tuna, have disappeared as a result of overfishing. That means that for every 10 fish that existed before 1950, only one lives today.

C. tuna and humans are getting along well

Annie Wauneka smiled as she touched the medal. It was the Presidential Medal of Freedom(总统自由勋章)! She was very proud to be the first Native American to get this award. It was given to her because of the Navajo people. A lot had changed because of her.

Annie was born in 1910 in Arizona. When Annie was 8 years old, her father sent her away to receive a good education—homes of Navajos were too spread to build schools near where people lived. That year a terrible flu swept through her school. Some of the students died. Annie wasn’t seriously affected, so she helped care for those who were sick. She said her interest in health work began to grow because of this early event in her life.

When she grew up, Wauneka saw the poor health of many Navajo people. This troubled her, and she wanted to do something about it. In 1951, she ran for a seat on the tribal council She won, and in fact, she served for 27 years.

From the start, she pushed for better living conditions. Every year, many Navajos and others died from tuberculosis(肺结核), or TB. Wauneka fought to reduce the number of TB cases and deaths across the country. This was the main reason she won the Medal of Freedom in 1963.

Wauneka wanted her people to take good care of their own health. She talked to them about health each week on the radio. And she wrote a dictionary of medical terms to help them talk to doctors and nurses that weren’t Navajos.

Wauneka knew that education was the key to a good future. First of all, she wanted Navajo children to have schools closer to where they lived. She knew from her own childhood experiences how hard it was to leave home at a young age.

Wauneka received the name “Legendary(传奇的) Mother of the Navajo Nation” from the tribal council in 1984. She could have stopped then, but of course she didn’t. At the time of her death in 1997, her grandson said, “She made us proud to be Navajo.” Annie Wauneka would have smiled to hear him say that.

D. many Navajos went to that school

Televisions were talked about most at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). They were bigger and better, with some of the highest technology ever.

Some of the TVs used a new technology called OLED. They were thinner and larger, offered better color and were brighter than traditional LEDs. UHDTVs were also popular. Most of those at the show used 4K technology, which has a resolution(分辨率) that is 4 times that of traditional HDTVs. Sharp Electronics showed off an 8K UHDTV. Its resolution is 16 times that of standard HDTVs.

Many smart TVs(智能电视) offered technology that let users have a more personalized(个性化的) experience. One such TV from the electronics company TCL uses sensors (传感器) and voice recognition to determine who is watching. It then offers programming based on the user. Another TV from Panasonic offers a similar personalized user experience.

Besides television technology, size also played a major part in CES 2013. Televisions are different in size from big to bigger, with at least two companies—Samsung and Hisense—exhibiting TVs measuring 110 inches.

Gary Shapiro is president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the group that organizes CES. He gave one of the most important speeches on the opening day. “Now of course you know that CES is more than a trade show. It’s gathering (集会) of the brightest minds and the top leaders from many industries and those wanting to know more about the future.”

Different kinds of digital health and fitness equipment were also big at CES 2013. There was equipment that can know your activity and others that can measure blood pressure, heart rate and weight. There was even a fork that tells you when you are eating too fast.

CEA President Gary Shapiro says there was much to see but not nearly enough time to see it all. “You cannot see the show in the four days that you have. We have over 3,200 different companies showing over 20,000 new products in about 26 miles worth of exhibit space.”

71. What makes the UHDTV that Sharp Electronics showed so special?

A. It uses 4K technology.

B. Its resolution is much higher.

C. It is brighter than traditional LEDs.

D. It uses a new technology called OLED.

72. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about TVs?

B. TVs have sensors equipped in them.

C. TVs this year have a higher resolution.

D. V oice recognition is widely used in TVs.

A. those companies that produce TVs in different sizes

B. the brightest minds that turned up at the show

C. those companies that exhibited large TVs

D. TVs that will play a major part in 2013

74. The last paragraph is written to ____.

A. tell readers the show didn’t last long enough

B. encourage the readers to have a look at the show

C. show the show is very important and necessary

D. tell many new products were exhibited at the show

75. What’s the main idea of the passage?
