Skiping classes violates school rules and a poor attendance record will damage your final mark. But some college students still try every means to escape classes. The number of these rebels may be much bigger than you think. Three students from Anhui Normal University established Itaoke. Com in June. The website quickly attracted 2 000 registered members in tlree months. On the website, students share their experiences of skipping classes and even post ads to look for someone to stand in for them to attend courses. Its embarrassing for universities to see this shameful behavior discussed:

However,it's good for schools and teachers to know via the website the reasons why students skip classes, according to Professor Xiao Haitao from Shenzhen University: Xao pointed out that some`students skip classes because of laziness.Others play truant because the teaching is truly dissatisfactory,“Universities can seek improvements to give a cure to the class-skipping problem,”said Xiao.

Chen Yang,21,thinks that he is “forced" to skip some courses because of the poor teaching. the senior, majoring in English at Yangtze University, thinks that he's wasting time in the classroom when the teacher reads the textbook word for word or hands him outdated reading materials. He would rather skip classes to study in the library, watch online videos of Harvard or Yale lectures,or sit in on(旁听)other courses he is interested in. Chen draws a clear line between himself and those who skip classes in order to get more sleep or fool around on campus. He emphasized:“I skip classes with a clear goal, which is to probe into areas I'm interested in and

br oaden my horizons.”

Li Sicen,President of the National Taiwan University, seems to be on Chen's side. Li claimed that he supported those students who skip classes for good reasons.

However,Professor Xiao warns students that Li is not giving permission for students to skip classes. Xiao suggests that Li was just showing his understanding of truancy in a limited number of cases.

In Professor Pan Cuiqiong's opinion, students tend to jump to the conclusion that a certain course is boring and useless. "To clear students' misunderstanding, teachers should use materials closely related to students’lives and adapt interactive teaching methods,”said Pan.

Besides offering teachers more training, schools also need to give students different optional courses and ensure that they can attend the courses they are interested in,according to Professor Xiao. Many Chinese students have the experience of being kicked out of an optional course because its size is limited. They are then forced to choose courses they dislike and are likely to skip them. We may learn from Sydney University in Australia. There aren't any problems with numbers---if a course is popular then there will be more than one class per week.

Boys do worse in English when there are girls in their class, researchers will say today, contradicting the widely held belief that girls are always a good influence on boys in school. Boys do best with "as few girls as possible" in English lessons at primary and secondary school, Steven Proud from Bristol University has found. But when it comes to maths and science, both boys and girls at primary school achieve up to a tenth of a grade more when there is a high proportion of girls in the class, Proud found.

Proud tracked boys' and girls' test results at the ages of 7, 11, 14 and 16 in 16000

schools in England between 2002 and 2004 for his Ph. D, He analysed the test scores to see whether the proportion of girls in a year group made a difference to the results of both genders in math, science and English. Proud looked at the schools that were in their high or low proportion of girls. Boys consistently perform up to a tenth of a grade worse when they study English with high numbers of girls as opposed to few or no girls,Proud found. The more girls there are in an English class, the worse boys perform. This is particularly the case in primary schools,he discovered. Proud will argue that his results show boys should be taught English in single-sex classes.

Girls, who outperform boys in English at every stage at school, are unaffected by the number of boys in their English classes. Girls also do better when there are some boys who receive free school meals in their class,Proud found. He said, "The results imply that boys would benefit at all ages from being taught English with as small a proportian of girls as possible, In maths and science, the results tend to imply that both boys and girls benefit from having more girls in the classroom A mix of the genders in both science and maths is the best choice.”

Proud said boys may do worse in English when there is a high proportion of girls in their class because they realize that the girls are better than them. It could also be that teachers use teaching styles more appropriate to girls when there are more girls than boys in the class. Both genders perform better in maths and science at primary school when there are more girls in the class because boys tend to disrupt the class more,he said.

Professor Alan Smithers from the University of Buckingham said girls started school with slightly better verbal skills, while boys started with a slightly greater ability for maths;“Boys might be discouraged by how well girls are doing in English,”he said,“but that still does not explain why they would do better in maths and science with a higher propor tion of girls in their class.”

While it's not an actual planner or calendar App,if you take notes to stay organized, then Evemote is for you. The main thing about Evernate is that all of your notes are automatically sent into the cloud(云储存平台上)---and then you can access them from any web-connected computer via the Evemote App or a web browser. Evernote also support audio and photo notes-rather handy if you want to record your lecture or take photos of any projected notes. But,of course, ask for permission first.

The normal links that you'd see to each section of an article xre no longer on the main screen. Instead, there's a small icon located at the bottom of the app, which can be used to access all the sections of an article. You can also open the links in Safari(苹果)Safari(浏览器).According to the developers' site, loading Wikipedia pages with Wikpanion is a lot faster than accessing the Wikipedia site from the iPhone's browses. Three boys and three girls were going to Fort Lauderdale and when they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine in paper bags, dreaming of golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished behind them.

As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo, He sat in front of them, dressed in a plain,ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He kept chewing the inside of his lip a lot, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.

Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson's,and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life:perhaps he was a sea captain,a runaway from his wife,an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus,one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.

"We're going to Fl orida,”she said brightly:“I hear it's really beautiful.”

“It is,”he said quietly,as if remembering somethng'he had tried to forget.

"Want some wine?" she said. He smiled and took a swig. He thanked her and once again returned to his silence. After a while, she went back to the others, and Vingo nodded in his sleep.

In the morning, they awoke outside another Howard Johnson's.and This time Vingo went in. The girl insisted that he join them. He seemed very shy, and ordered black coffee and smoked nervously as the young people chattered about sleeping on beaches. When they returned to the hus,the girl sat with Vingo again, and after a while, slowly and painfully,he told his story. He had been in jail in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home.

“A re you married?”

“I don't know.

“You don’t know?,she said.

“Well, when I was in jail I wrotet to my wife,”he said.“I told her that I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it.if the kids kept asking questions,if it hurt too much, wel l,she could just forget me, I'd understand. Get a new guy,I said she's a wonderful woman, really something and forget about me.

I told her she didn't have to write me for nothing. A nd she didn't. Not for three and a half years.”

"And you’re going home now,not knowing?,,

“Yeah,”he said shyly.“Well, last week, when I was sure the parole was coming through, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick, just before Jacksonville, and there’s a big oak tree just as you came into town. I told her that if she'd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I'd get off and come home, If she didn't want me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I'd go on through.”

"Vow,”the girl exclaimed. "Wow.”

She told the others, and noon all of them were in it, caught up in the approach of Brunswick, looking at the pictures Vingo showed them of his wife and three children. The woman was handsome in a plain way,the children still unformed in the much-handled snapshots.

Now they were 20 miles from Brunswick, and the young people took over window seat on the right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. The bus acquired a dark, hushed mood, full of the silence of absence and lost years. Vingo stopped looking, 'tightening his face into the ex-con's mask,as if fortifying himself against still another disappointment.

Then Brunswick was ten miles, and then five. "then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying, doing small dances of joy. All except Vingo.

Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree. It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs,20 of them,30 of them, maybe hundreds,a tree that stood like a banner of welcome billowing in the wind. As the young people shouted, the old rose and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

What Should You Do When an Earthquake Hits?

If you find the ground shaking beneath your feet, there's an international consensus on how you should act. Earthquake safety boils down to tht-ee basic steps:

1 . Drop to the ground.

2. Take cover by getting under a sturdy deck or table.

3: Hold on to it until the shaking stops.

If there isn't a table or desk near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Do not try to run to another room just to get under a table.

If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are: Broken glass on the floor has caused injury to those who have rolled to the floor or tried to get to doorways.

If you are outdoors, move to a clear area if you can safely do so;avoid power lines, trees, signs, buildings, vehicles, and other hazards: If you're at the movies ox a sports game, stay at your seat and protect your head and neck with your arms. Don't try to leave until the shaking is over, Then walk out slowly watching for anything that could fall in the aftershocks.

If you're driving a car, pull over to the side of the road, stop, and set the parking brake. Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs and other hazards. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is over: If a power line falls on the car, stay inside until a trained person removes the wire.

If you're by the shore, drop, cover and hold on until the shaking stops. Estimate how long the shaking lasts. If severe shaking lasts 20 seconds or more, immediately evacuate to high ground as a tsunami(海啸)might have been generated by the earthquake: 1Vlove inland 3 kilometers(2 miles)or to land that is at least 30 meters(100 feet) above sea level immediately. Don't wait for officials to issue a warning. Walk quickly, rather than drive,to avoid traffic.debris and other hazards

If you live downstream for a dam,you should know flood-zone information and have prepared an evacuation plan. Latastrophie failure is unlikely, but dams can fail during major earthquakes.

The main point is to try not to move and to immediately protect yourself as best as possible where you are. Earthquakes occur without any warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl;you therefore will most likely be knocked to the ground where you happen to be. You will never know if the initial jolt will turn out to be start of the big one

In addition, studies of injuries and deaths caused by earthquakes in the US over the last several decades indicate you are much more likely to be injured by falling or flying objects(TVs,lamps, glass, bookecases, etc.)

On October 13,2011,two-yearold Wang Yue was playing on the street. Unfortunately,a small van rushed by and ran over the young girl. But with brief stopping, the van continued driving. Then a second vehicle struck the girl again and rushed by without stopping. At least 18 people passed the seriously injured girl before finally an old woman who was later discovered to be making a living by collecting scraps came to her rescue. After 8 days of struggle in hospital,Wang Yue died and left us forever. The incident has stirred heated discussions both in and outside China.

Most people can't believe this incident should have happened in Guaiigdong,a place where China's economic reforms first began and a place which has powered the country's remarkable growth People have focused much on economic development, but they haven't paid enough attention to the promotion of morality. While we can't ignore the development of economy,we should offer a hand to those in need as well.

We should concentrate more on the education of morality and enforce laws to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard. They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking. Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science. Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
