used to 與would

⑴used to 和would 都可用來描述在過去某一段時間內的習慣動作或經常做的事,一般來說,我們用used to 來開始一段故事;used to 可用來表示現在與過去的對比,而would 不能。

eg:I used to go work by bus . Now I go by car .

eg:I have given up smoking . I used to smoke very heavily .

⑵ used to 可用來表示過去的狀態和情況;would 只表示過去重複的動作,不能表示狀況和情況:

eg:This sort of novel used to be very popular .

這類小說曾經是很受歡迎

⑶would 可用於表是過去很不規則的的習慣,所以常和often , always , frequently , sometimes 等時間頻度副詞連用;在非正式文體中used to 也可以這樣用:

短語:

When I was young , I used to have a lot more free time than I do now . I used to live near my work and would always get home early . Sometimes I would do a bit of gardening or go for a walk . Now I never have time of anything like that . Exercise:

1)He used to smoke a lot , but now he has give up .

2)It is said pirates used to / would hide gold here .

3)The pirates would / used to often bury gold in the cave

4)The river used to be clean . 這條河曾經是乾淨的

5)?I?ll leave this job for a better one? . he would say when he was scolded by his boss .

分詞用法(現在分詞doing / 過去分詞v. +ed)

1. 分詞性質:

句有形容詞或副詞性質,可以在句中擔任表語,定語、賓補或狀語。其中,現在分詞表主動的含義,或動作正在進行;過去分詞表示被動含意,或動作已完成。

2.分詞的用法:做表語、定語賓補或狀語。

1)做定語:

a sleeping baby= a baby who is sleeping

a running dog= a dog which is running

a broken glass =a glass which is broken

a beaten team =a team which is beaten

*beat [bi:t] vt.打;戰勝vi.跳動n.跳動(聲);節拍

*beaten ['bi:tn] adj. 被擊敗的, 錘成的, 踩出來的, 筋疲力盡的

動詞beat的過去分詞

eg:This is the problem discussed at the last meeting .

=This is the problem which was discussed at the last meeting .

eg:The problem being discussed is very important .

=the problem which is being discussed is very important .

注意:

1. 單個分詞作定語,放在所修飾的名詞之前。分詞短語做定語,放在所修飾的名詞之後。

2. 分詞作定語的句子能改寫為定語從句。

3. 區別現在分詞作定語和動名詞作定語。

a sleeping car 臥舖車箱;a sleeping baby 正在睡覺的嬰兒

a reading room ;a reading girl

a swimming pool ;a swimming player

動名詞作定語:某種功能

現在分詞作定語:動作正在進行著

2)做表語

eg:The news sounds exciting .

eg:They got very excited.

eg:His father seems pleased with his score .

*score 得分、分數

eg:My watch is gone . 我的錶不見了。

eg:The book is interesting .

eg:He is interested in the book.

do + ing 令人……

do + ed 感到……

3)做賓語

eg:When I woke up , I found my mother sitting beside me.

eg:I?d lik e to have this package weighed .

*weigh [wei] vi.稱得重量vt.稱,稱…的重量;權衡

eg:I hear a bell ringing somewhere . *ringing 鈴聲

eg:I had a tooth pulled off .

eg:I found the snake eating the eggs.

eg:I found the snake(to)eat the eggs.

用不定式表動作已發生完了。

eg:I found the eggs eaten by the snake .

我發現雞蛋被蛇吃了。

eg:He heard someone calling him.

eg:He heard his name called .

eg:I can?t make myself understood because of my poor English .

eg:I didn?t make myself heard because a lot of people cried in the hall

注意:

1. 後接賓語再接分詞作賓補的常用動詞:

感官動詞:hear , see , notice , watch , feel , find ……..

使役性動詞:make , let , have , get ……..

2. 動詞不定式做賓補→ 動作全過程

現在分詞作賓補→ 動作正在進行

過去分詞做賓補→ 被動概念

4)作狀語(現在分詞表主動,進行;過去分詞表被動,完成)

eg:If you turn to the left , you?ll find the station .

→ Turning to the left , you?ll find the station .

eg:As I didn?t receive her letter , I called her up by telephone .

→ Not receiving her letter , I called her up by telephone .

eg:While I was walking to school , I met a friend .

→ Walking to school , I met a friend .

eg:When she was asked if she had any bad habit , she answered that she was a heavy smoker . → Asked if she had any bad habit , she answered that she was a heavy smoker .

注意:

1. 分詞作狀語可以還原為狀語從句。

2. 運用此類句型時前後主語要保持一致。

eg:If weather permits , I?ll start tomorrow .

→ weather permitting , I?ll start tomorrow .

翻譯:

發展中國家→ developing countries;發達國家→ developed countries

(地上的)落葉→ fallen leaves ;(正在飄落的)落葉→ falling leaves

(正在沸騰的)開水→ boiling water;(滾開過的)開水→ boiled water

落水者→ a drowning person ;溺水者→ a drown ed person

What did the team find?

Dreams of finding lost treasure almost came true recently. A new machine called 'The Revealer' has been invented and it has been used to detect gold which has been buried in the ground. The machine was used in a cave near the seashore where -- it is said -- pirates used to hide gold. The pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it. Armed with the new machine, a search party went into the cave hoping to find buried treasure. The leader of the party was examining the soil near the entrance to the cave when the machine showed that there was gold under the ground. V ery excited, the party dug a hole two feel deep. They finally found a small gold coin which was almost worthless. The party then searched the whole cave thoroughly but did not find anything except an empty tin trunk. In spite of this, many people are confident that 'The Revealer' may reveal something of value fairly soon.

They finally found a small gold coin which was almost worthless. The party then searched the whole cave thoroughly but did not find anything except an empty tin trunk.

released the gift through a special organization that he and his wife started two years ago .The Gates Foundation is in Seattle, Washington . It is near the headquarters of the Microsoft computer company that Mister Gates started and operates. The Gates Foundation is of the biggest not-for-profit organizations in the world. It has more the twenty-four-thousand-million dollars. Mister Gates and Microsoft have helped India develop its information technology industry.
