Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment:

(1)

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities. However, grade-based assessment is still very common. Grades often hold back creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports. Grades are also an unfair measure of a student's ability. I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded. However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on grades.

I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.

Magdalena Smith, President,

Drama Club

(2)

Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as an encouragement for hardworking students and as a warning to those who are not. Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students' achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades. My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

Simon Harper, Member, Science Club.

Both sexes make and receive almost the same number of calls- 277,000 for men and 288,000 for women. But women spend 13, 500 more hours in total on their conversations.

More than half of those chats are work-related but people spend on average twice as long on a personal call (10 minutes) as on a business one. Despite the explosion in mobile phone ownership, most people still prefer to use landlines, the poll found. However, when people are tired of talking, the top excuse for getting a caller off the lines to say "Someone's at the door." Other housewives include "I'm cooking." and "I need to go to the toilet." Eight out of ten phone users admitted not answering their phones on purpose if they did not want to speak to the caller. One in three people thought calls after 10 pm were unacceptable but a quarter of those polled said they did not mind calls up to midnight. Two-thirds admitted they had people in their address books who they knew they should ring but never got round to doing so.

A school dropout from a poor village, Rammar Pillai, was an Indian hero who turned out to be a fraud. Throughout the summer some of India's top scientists and government officials believed that Pillai had made the most revolutionary discovery of the century. Using a few secret plants he could turn water into petrol .

It all started on a class picnic back in 1978 in the rain forests. "When I lit up a stove, a spark fell on a small plant and the green leaves started to burn ," he told a newspaper. "My first idea was to put out the fire, but later I realized that I had found something amazing."

Pillai dropped out of school and spent the next ten years searching the forest, setting fire to hundreds of different plants until, at last, he found the one from his class picnic. He set up a simple laboratory in his home and over the following years his plant fuel, which sold for 20 rupees a litter, powered all of the village machinery.

Outside of his village, nobody took Pillai seriously. But in July he was given a chance to prove his plant petrol was the real thing at the Department of Science and Technolo in New Delhi, India's capital. After seeing Pillai's experiment, the department head said, "If this is true, we are sitting on a gold mine."

India's fuel expenses add up to 20 per cent of its total imports and Pillai's discovery raised hopes that India could free itself from debt to the oil-producing nations of the Gulf.

But during a second experiment before many of India's top scientists Pillai was discovered to have played a trick. As he carried out his test one of the scientists noticed the spoon he was using was empty in the middle and filled with petrol that Pillai then put into the water.

This is how he created his fuel.

Pillai then stopped the experiment saying the government was trying to steal his secret. He has since returned to his village, where he has become a hero, a magician who changes his magical leaves into petrol before thousands of cheering fans. 33. You hear the same complaint all the time: "My memory is terrible." Is it all in the mind, or do real changes take place in the brain with the passing of time? The answer is that the brain's cells, the neurons, decline and die with age. However, according to Professor Arthur Shimamura of the University of California, people vary greatly in how they change mentally with age, as well as how much their mental ability declines.

There are three main ways in which mental function changes. The first concerns speed, such as how quickly you can react to fast-moving incidents on the road. Drivers in their late teen react quickly but often drive too fast, while the over-60's are more careful but react more slowly. This type of mental slowing results from a reduction in the efficiency with which the brain's neurons work.

The fact that adults find it harder to learn musical instrument than children points to a second type of mental decline, the loss of learning ability with age. The part of the brain which is known to control new learning is particularly sensitive to the effects of ageing. This means we have to depend more on diaries and other mental aids as we get older, take longer to learn a new language and are slower to master new things at work.

"Working memory" is the third brain function that is sensitive to the effects of ageing. Absent-mindedness occurs at all ages because of imperfections in the working memory system. For example, you may continually lose your glasses, or find yourself walking into a room of your house only to find that you cannot remember what you came for. Such absent-mindedness also occurs more often as we get older. However, evidence also shows that the principle "use it or lose it" applies to the ageing brain. Professor Shimamura studied a group of university professors who were still mentally active, and compared their performance on neuro-psychological tests with that of others of their age group, as well as with younger people. He found that on several tests of memory, the mentally active professors in their 60's and early 70's performed better than those of the same age, and as well as the younger

group.

37. Memory gets worse as people grow older because_______

A. the brain starts to produce too many neurons

B. cells in the brain stop the neurons from working

C. the brain's neurons don"t work as well as before

D. when people get old, they complain too much

38. Which of the following well-known sayings best expresses the idea of the third paragraph?

A. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

B. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

C. Where there's a will, there's a way.

D. It's never too old to learn.

39. We can conclude from Shimamura's test on the professors that_______

A. active minds might keep their memory better

B. memory can improve with the time passing on

C. all of the old people will suffer memory loss

D. the principle "use it or lose it" is obviously wrong

40. This passage is mainly about _______

A. youth and ageing

B. problems of getting old

C. secrets of a good memory

D. ageing and mental ability
