Part III Cloze

Directions:Read the following passage and fill in each of the numbered blanks with one suitable word.

Passage 1

When snow or ice was on the ground, it was 1 impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sisters or I would pull him 2 through the streets of Brooklyn, NY, on a child's sleigh to the subway 3 entrance. Once there, he would cling to the handrail 4 until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice-free. In Manhattan the subway station was the 5 basement of his office building, and he would not have to go 6 outside again until we met him in Brooklyn' 7 on his way home.

When I think of it now, I marvel at how much 8 courage it must have taken for a grown man to 9 subject himself to such indignity and stress. And at how he did it - without 10 bitterness or complaint.

Passage 2

Many people think they can’t 1afford help with the house. The belief that household help is only for the 2 wealthy is a ―stubborn myth‖. We need to view hiring help 3 as a ―time-management tool for busy people.‖ 4 On the other hand, there are also costs 5 involved to not hiring help: health problems like 6 stress, lack of time for exercise, and sleep 7 deprivation; lost income where the hours 8 spent cleaning could have been used to 9 pursue career goals; and the strain on your marriage that could lead to money spent on counseling or even a 10 divorce.

Passage 3

Are you a compulsive 1 spender ,or do you hold on to your money as long as possible? Are you a 2 bargain hunter? Would you rather use charge accounts than pay 3 cash? Your answers to these questions will 4 reflect your personality. According to psychologists, our individual money habits not only show our beliefs and values, but can also 5 stem from past problems.

Experts in psychology believe that for many people, money is an important 6 symbol of strength and influence. Husbands who 7 compain cabout their wives’spending habits may be afraid that they are losing 8 power in their marriage. Wives, on the other hand, may waste huge 9 amounts of money because they are angry at their husbands. In addition, many people consider money a symbol of love. They spend it on their family and friends to 10 express love, or they buy themselves expensive presents because they need love.

Passage 4

Friendship is a very difficult thing. It is hard to 1 handle. In fact I would say that friendship is as hard to handle as 2 love is, or even marriage. Of course I am not talking about easy-come-easy-go friendship. I’m talking about friends who 3 care deeply about each other, who support each other, who make life 4 worth living. I’m talking about friends you can 5 share almost

everything with.

My friendship with Kathy was real friendship. She made me laugh. She made me feel 6 wanted. She understood me. She was never 7 too busy to see me. We were sixteen when we met at the local technical college and we were both doing the 8 same course. I was very nervous the day I started and Kathy was the first person I talked to. 9 As a result, I really enjoyed my year at the Tech. Like I say, she was fun, she was lively, she was sure of herself. And a little bit of her character 10 rubbed off on me.

Part IV Reading Comprehension:

Directions: Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one you think is the best answer.

Passage 1

Crime has its own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. According to the police records that have been studied for five years from over 2400 cities and towns, a surprising link is shown between changes in the season and crime patterns. The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal; it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, robbing has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February. The month with least crimes of all? May –except for one strange fact. More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.

Apparently our seasonal cycles of knowledge are completely different from our tendencies for crimes. Professor Huntington made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings and get highest results on examinations. In all cases, he found a spring high and autumn high separated by a summer low.

Possibly, high temperature and high humidity (湿度) cause our strange and violent summer actions, but police officials are not sure. ―There is, of course, no proof of a connection between humidity and murder,‖ they say. ―Why murder’s high time should come in the summer time we really don’t know.‖

Passage2

How men first learned to invent words is unknown. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations –the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the happy and sad events of our past; the more we read and learn, the larger the number of words that mean something to us becomes.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to out minds and feelings. This attractive use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and, by their position and association, can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech dull and silly.

1.Which of the following did men invent first? B

A) Words

B) Sounds

C) Signs

D) Letters

2. Why did men invent language? B

B) They last longer than signs or sounds.

C) They remind people of their past experience.

D) They enable people to live longer and read more.

A) A poet is full of great thoughts and feelings.

B) A poet is an example of good language users.

C) A poet tells of the glad and sad events of his past.

D) A poet knows more sounds and words than others.

5. What is the best title of the passage? A

A) Language and Its Use.

B) Language and Human Experience.

C) Poet: A Master of Words.

D) How Language Came into Being.

Passage 3

Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV –if they ever get home in time. There are similarities, of course, but the policemen don’t think much of them.

The first difference is that a policemen’s real life centers around the law. Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down a narrow street after someone he wants to talk to.

Little of his time is spent in chatting to pretty girls or in dramatic confrontations (对峙) with desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty –or not –of stupid, minor crimes.

Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he’s arrested, the story is over, in real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks –where failure to produce results reflects on the fame of the police –little effort is spent on searching.

Having made an arrest, a detective (侦探) really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and, to do that, he often has to gather a lot of different evidence. So, as well as being overworked, a detective has to be out at all hours of the day and night interviewing his witness and persuading them, usually against their own interests, to help him.

1. What does the first paragraph tell us about policemen? C

A) They often watch TV.

B) They like watching TV.

C) They are too busy to watch TV.

D) They hate seeing themselves on TV.

2. Why does the writer mention a lawyer in the second paragraph? C

A) To show that a lawyer’s job is more comfortable.

B) To emphasize that policemen are physically strong.

C) To compare a lawyer’s job with policemen’s.

D) To indicate that a lawyer’s job is less important than a policeman’s.

3. What do real policemen do at work? B

A) They often deal with robbers and thieves.

B) They talk with a lot of victims and visitors.

C) They don’t deal with serious crimes very often.

D) The usually stay in their office studying cases.

4. What does the passage say about a detective? C

A) His job is to make arrests.

B) He is good at finding criminals.

C) He has to prove his case in court.

D) He visits and helps his witnesses.

5. What is the main idea of the passage? D

A) It is hard for policemen to do their job well.

B) Policemen keep in touch with a lot of people.

C) Policemen are people that we admire and respect.

D) Real policemen’s life is different from what is shown on TV.

Passage 4

In the traditional marriage, the man as the breadwinner worked at a job to earn money for the family. Most men worked in an office, a factory, or some other places away form the home. Since the man earned the money, he paid the bills. His income was used for food, clothes, a house, and other family necessities. The man made most of the decisions. He was the boss.

In the traditional marriage, the woman seldom worked away from the house. She stayed at home to rear the children and take care of her husband. She cooked the meals, cleaned the house, washed the clothes, and did other household work. Her job at home was very important.

In recent years, many couples continue to have a traditional relationship of this kind. The man has a job and earns the money for the family. The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house. Many Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. But some other Americans have a different impression of marriage and family responsibilities.

There are two important differences in male and female roles now. One is that both men and women have many more choices. They may choose to marry or to stay single. They may choose to work or stay at home. Both men and women may choose roles that are comfortable for them.

A second difference in male and female roles is that within marriage many decisions and responsibilities are shared. The couple may choose to have children, or they may not. If they have children, the man may take care of them some of the time, all of the time, or not at all. The woman may want to stay at home and take care of the children. Or she may want to go to work. Men and women now make decisions together in a marriage. Many married people now share these decisions and the responsibilities of their families.

1)Which of the following is NOT true in the traditional marriage? B

A. Men worked at a job to earn money for the family.

B. The woman made most of decisions.

C. The woman stayed at home to care for the children.

D. The man paid the bills.

2)In recent years _______. D

A. young couples reject the traditional relationship

B. the woman has a job and earns the money for the family

C. the woman doesn’t stay at home and care for the children and the house

D. the role of men and women has begun to change

3)Men and women may now choose all the following EXCEPT to __D_____.

a)marry or to stay single

b)work or to stay at home

c)have the roles that are comfortable for them

d)leave their jobs just because they have children

4)The following are all now true EXCEPT ___D____.

A. they may choose to have children or not

B. the man may take care of the children some of the time

C. the woman may want to go to work

D. the woman is the most important person in the house

5)Which of the following is NOT true? D

a)The man was the boss in the traditional marriage.

b)The woman’s job at home was very important in the past.

c)Many Americans still have a traditional marriage.

d)Everyone tries to get married.

Passage 5

Some researchers have indicated that the vast increase of women in the workforce may decrease marriage chances. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. On the other hand, women’s financial state may also encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man were important in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to postpone marriage because the couple cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy rebounds(回弹), the number of marriages also rises.

Coincident(一致)with the increase in women working outside the home is the increase in divorce rates. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider(养家者)may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible. Stresses grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. Considering high unemployment, inflationary problems(通货膨胀), and slow growth in real earnings, a working wife can increase household income and relieve some of these pressing financial burdens. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.

Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife without a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go

together to create a stronger and more stable union.

Also, a major part of women’s inequa lity in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. With higher earning capacity and status occupations outside of the home comes the capacity to exercise power within the family. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.

Passage6

Looking through my high-school yearbook, I was amazed by how similar everyone looked. People who stood out were few and far between. Thinking about it now, I realize that individuality is endangered. Everyone wants to look, act and sound like everyone else. This makes no sense, considering we are told from an early age to "be yourself." If we are told to be individuals, why is fitting in such an issue?

The media has a huge influence on youth. If you turn on MTV, you'll see the epitome (范例) of what is considered "cool." What surprises me is that people feel they need to look and dress a certain way to be cool. Those who don't fit this mold are considered nerds.

Television figures and celebrities are major role models; teens and preteens alike strive to match their favorite celebrity's look, but if people need to look like others to find a sense of

self-worth, then the problem is beyond individuality. The problem becomes teens' lack of self-esteem, contributing to their need to conform. People conform to blend in and go unnoticed.

If society could implement programs to teach kids self-esteem, then lack of individuality would no longer be an issue. Teen suicide rates would probably decrease, too. If teenagers are comfortable with who they are, then suicide would not be such an oft-chosen option. Teaching individuality would lessen the pressure on teens to fit in, and would create a healthier society.

Lack of individuality plagues society as a whole. Those who have the courage and confidence to express themselves are the "coolest" people. In a world of conformity made up of black and white, it is good to throw a hint of the rainbow in every once in a while just for kicks and self-esteem.

A. be unique in character

B. endure hardships

C. be noticeable by queer looks

B. they tend to imitate theirs idols of television celebrities who usually represent social fashion

C. they want to be different from the others

D. they want to step into a healthier society

3) Teaching individuality would __D___.

A. let them pay more attention to health

B. stop teens’ dream of being cool

C. increase the peer pressure

D. help teens to express themselves and build up a sense of self-worth

4) It is implied in the passage that __B___.

A. peer pres sure for being cool indirectly leads to teens’ suicide

Passage 7

"Congratulations, Mr Jones, it's a girl."

Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and brings forth a different answer from every man

who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering

whether they will be good fathers.Although there are some men who like children and may have had

considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other

couples, pregnancy was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.

Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that

of father is a difficult task.Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this

remobilization process.Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only

recently has literature focused on the role of a father.

It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father's role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother's role. The mother's role seems to require complete

transformation in daily routine and highly innovative adaptation;on the other hand, the father's role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing number of women

are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.

1. According to the author, being a father___C_____.

B. excuses the American writers for ignoring the difficulties of being a father

C. supports the idea that the chief role of a father is to earn money for the family

D. complains about the lack of social program to help husbands get used to the role of a father

4. The transition to the mother's role requires that the wife___B_____.

A. change her lifestyle in a highly innovative way

B. make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation

C. stay at home to take care of the baby

D. help her husband in his remobilization process

5. Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, __A____.

B. have to make more difficult adaptations

C. have an easier job to do

D. can usually do a better job

Passage 8

Perhaps the most amazing thing to come out of kinesics, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks –we are not born with them. A baby has generally unformed facial ( 脸部的) features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set eyebrows by looking at those around –family and friends.

This helps explain why the people of some regions of the United States look so much alike. New Englanders or southerners have certain common facial characteristics that cannot be explained by genetics (遗传学). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth. It is learned later. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well into adolescence (青春期). A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us.

This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United States, for example, the South is the part where people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peach Tree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in densely populated urban areas also tend to smile and greet each other in public less than do people in rural areas and small towns.

Passage 9

Testing has replaced teaching in most public schools. My own children’s school week is focused on pretests, drills, tests, and retests. I believe that my daughter Erica, who gets excellent marks, has never read a chapter of any of her school textbooks all the way through. And teachers are often heard to state proudly and openly that they teach to the state test.

Teaching to the test is a curious phenomenon. Instead of deciding what skills students ought to learn, helping students learn them, and then using some sensible methods of assessment (评估) to discover whether students have mastered the skills, teachers are encouraged to reverse the process. First one looks at a test. Then one draws the skills needed not to master, say, reading, but to do well on the test. Finally, the test skills are taught.

The ability to read or write or calculate might imply the ability to do reasonably well on standard tests. However, neither reading nor writing develops simply through being taught to take tests. We must be careful to avoid mistaking preparation for a test of a skill with the acquisition of that skill. Too many discussions of basic skills make this fundamental confusion because people are test obsessed rather than concerned with the nature and quality of what is taught.

Recently many schools have faced with what could be called the crisis of comprehension or, in simple terms, the phenomenon of students with grammar skills still being unable to understand what they read. These students are good at test taking, but they have little or no experience reading or thinking, and talking about what they read. They are taught to be so concerned with grade that they have no time or ease of mind to think about meaning, and reread things if necessary.

A) She teaches in a middle school.

B) She reads many good books.

C) She does well on tests.

A) To master basic reading skills.

B) To learn how to deal with tests.

C) To read well in order to pass tests.

D) To master all kinds of skills.

A) The nature and quality of subjects are more important than marks on them.

B) Teachers should force students to learn to red and write and calculate well.

C) Good preparation for standard tests is necessary for students.

D) Most students are clear about how to acquire basic skills.

4. What do students do when they are test obsessed? A

A) They pay attention only to tests.

B) They hate tests very much.

C) They try to avoid rereading things.

D) They often join in discussion.

5. What kind of students does the writer dislike most? D

A) Students with poor test marks and without creative thinking.

B) Students active in thinking yet unable to talk about what they read.

C)tudents who are too well prepared for any test.

D) Students unable to understand what they read.

Passage 10

Learning a foreign language is not a matter of reading some grammar rules and memorizing some vocabulary words—although those are important activities not to be ignored. Acquiring a language is learning a skill, not a body of information. It’s as much like learning to swim or ride a bike. That is, you must not only understand the ideas and concepts, have information at hand, but also make your body accustomed to using that information in physical activity: in this case the physical activity involved is speaking, listening, writing and reading.

You need, then, not only to memorize and understand, but also to practice!

Here are a few brief suggestions on effective practice/study techniques.

1. Make your mouth or hand do what your mind is learning. Study out loud. Do go to the lab and work on the tapes. Study with a friend, thus involving yourself in speaking and listening. Try to write sentences or a short paragraph using the skills you have practiced orally.

2. Study day-by-day. You cannot get by in a foreign language course by cramming (临时抱佛脚) at the last minute. You may be able to ―learn‖ vocabulary items that way, but you cannot teach your mouth to use them in sentences.

3. Occasionally go back and review ―old‖topics and vocabulary. Language learning is accumulative (累积的). You learn new skills on the basis of old ones. The more you ―recycle‖familiar information and skills, the better you will be able to absorb new ones.

4. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Self-consciousness (害羞) can be a mighty obstacle to learning a language. Perhaps part of the reason small children readily acquire languages is that they are not afraid of making mistakes.

The first paragraph of the passage has been written to emphasize that____C______.

A. learning to swim is very difficult

A. one may not find enough time to use at the last minute

B. anything learnt that way can hardly be put into use

C. nothing can be learnt through cramming

D. it is of little use to study without a clear purpose
