The pickle jar (泡菜坛), as far back as I can remember, sat beside the dresser in my parents’ bedroom. When he got ready for bed, Dad would throw any coins that were in his pockets into the jar. As they dropped, they landed with a merry Jingle.

Whenever the jar was full, Dad would sit at the kitchen table and roll up the coins before taking them to the bank.

Every time, as he slid the box of rolled coins across the counter at the bank toward the cashier, he would smile proudly and say: ―These are for my son’s college fund .‖

We would always celebrate each deposit by stopping for an ice cream cone. Dad would show me the coins in his change a nd say: ―When we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again.‖ He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar. ―You might have to get to college on loose change,‖ he said. ―But you’ll get there.‖

The years passed, and I went to college, married and took a job in another town.

Once, while visiting my parents, I noticed that the pickle jar was gone. It had served its purpose. My dad was a man of few words, and he never lectured me on the values of determination,

perseverance or faith. The pickle jar had taught me all of those far better than the most flowery words could have done.

Soon, my daughter Jessica was born. We spent Christmas that year with my parents. After dinner, Mom and Dad sat next to each other on the sofa, taking turns holding their first grandchild. When Jessica began to cry, my wife Susan took her from Dad’s arms to put her in her crib(婴儿床) in my parents’ room.

Susan came back with tears in her eyes. She led me into my parents’ room. ―Look,‖ she said softly. To my amazement, there, next to the dresser, as if it had never been removed, stood the old pickle jar, the bottom already covered with coins. I walked over to it, dug down into my pocket, and pulled out several coins. Choked by emotion, I dropped them into the jar.

I looked up and saw that Dad had slipped quietly into the room. Our eyes locked, and I knew he was feeling the same emotions. Neither of us spoke, because we knew that nothing had to be said.

It is a tall tale that terrifies most young children. Swallow a piece of chewing gum and it will remain in your body for seven years before it is digested (消化). An even worse tale is that swallowed gum can wrap itself around your heart.

But what would happen if you should accidentally eat a stick of gum? Chewing gum is made out

of gum base, sweeteners, coloring and flavoring. The gum base is pretty indigestible—it is a mixture of d ifferent ingredients that our body can’t absorb.

Most of the time, your stomach really cannot break down the gum the way it breaks down other foods. However, your digestive system has another way to deal with things you swallow. After all, we eat lots of things that we are unable to fully digest. They keep moving along until they make it all the way through the gut(肠子)and come out at the other end one or two days later.

The saliva(唾液)will make an attempt at digesting chewing gum as soon as we put it in our mouths. It might get through the shell(表层)but many of gum's base ingredients are indigestible. It's then down to our stomach muscles—which contract and stretch, much like the way an earthworm moves—to slowly force the things that we swallow through our systems.

Swallowing a huge piece of gum or swallowing many small pieces of gum in a short time can cause a blockage within the digestive system, most often in children, who have a thinner digestive tract than adults—but this is extremely rare.

55.What’s the function of Para.1?

A.To describe a scene.

B. To introduce a topic.

C. To offer an argument.

C. It remains in our digestive system forever.

D. It will stick to the gut for one or two days.

57. The underlined word ―it‖ (in Para.4) refers to ―‖.

A. the chewing gum

B. the attempt

C. the saliva

D. the shell

58. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. How does our digestive system work?

B. Can chewing gum be swallowed by kids?

D. Why does swallowing chewing gum frighten kids?

C. Does swallowing chewing gum matter?

C

Please excuse me if I’m a little quiet today.

Mark is leaving, and I’m kind of sad.

You probably don’t know Mark, but you might know someone like him. He has been the heart and soul of the office for years. He has never been interested in getting credit for the terrific(极好的) work he does. He just does his job – superbly well.

We’re pleased that he is moving on to new, better things. But this doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye.

Life has a way of throwing curve balls at us. Just when we start to get comfortable with a person, a place or a situation, something comes along to make a change. A terrific neighbor moves away. Someone in the family graduates. A child finds new love through marriage.

Our ability to cope with change and disruption determines, to a great degree, our peace, happiness and contentment in life.

But how do we do that? Chris, a California surfer, once told me that the answer to life’s problems can be summed up in four words: ―Go with the flow.‖

―It’s like surfing,‖ Chris explained. ―You can’t organize the ocean. Waves just happen. You ride them where they take you, then you paddle back out there and catch the next one. You’re always hoping for the perfect wave where you can get it. But mostly you just take them the way they come.‖

I think Chris was saying that life is a series of events–both good and bad. There will always be things over which you have no control. The truly successful person expects the unexpected and is prepared to make adjustments.

Don’t stop trying to make all your dreams come true. But when things come up that aren’t exactly in your plan, work around them and then move on.

We’re going to miss Mark. But rather than be lost in the sadness of our parting, we would focus on our hopes for a brighter future—for him and for us. We’ll go out and do everything that we can to make that future happen.

Until our plans change—again.

59. The underlined part ―Life has a way of throwing curve balls at us‖(in Para.5) means―‖.

A. Things in life happen for a reason.

B. Life is like a ball game.

C. Life is filled with regret.

D. Life is full of changes.

60. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The author is pleased as well as sad that Mark is leaving.

B. The author’s sadness for Mark’s leaving will last a long time.

C. The author cannot understand why so many things are changing.

D. The author thinks it is too easy for us to get used to changes.

61. Why does the author quote Chris’ words?

A. Because Chris has experienced a lot in life.

B. Because Chris is popular and surfing is exciting.

C. Because Chris’ words show the author’s point vividly.

D. Because Chris’ words made people think.

62. Which of the following attitudes does the author probably favor?

A. Live in the present.

B. Be ready to deal with changes.

C. Do not expect too much from life.

D. Whatever happens, stick to your dreams.

D

Have your parents ever caught you misbehaving—fighting with peers, coming home late or playing computer games when you were supposed to be doing your homework? How did they react? Did they try to talk to you or just yell(叫喊) at you?

Parents used to rely on physical punishments like pushing or spanking (打屁股) to control their children’s behavior, which has prove d very harmful. Therefore, most parents now choose to simply yell, thinking that language probably won’t hu rt as much. But is that really so?

Using harsh (严厉的) words such as ―lazy‖ or ―stupid‖ to insult teenagers is just as harmful as hitting, according to a new study carried out at the University of Pittsburgh, US. ―It cannot reduce or correct their behavior problems,‖ said Professor Ming-Te Wang, leader of the study, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. ―On the contrary, it makes it worse.‖

The study’s subjects were 976 two-parent families with teenage children. Researchers asked the kids about their behavior problems while questioning parents about how often they had cursed or yelled at their kids.

Nearly half of the parents admitted that they’d shouted at their children in the past year. Researchers noted that the kids whose parents used more harsh words experienced more behavior problems afterwards, including fighting, stealing, lying as well as symptoms of depression.

―Adolescence is a very sensitive period when kids are trying to develop their self-identities. When you yell, it makes them feel the y are not capable and that they are worthless and useless,‖ Wang said. ―This may explain why so many parents say that no matter how loud they shout, their teenagers don’t listen.‖

While harsh yelling can stop bad behavior at the moment, it doesn’t teach ch ildren to behave how parents want them to, according to Professor Alan Kazdin of Yale University, US. What parents need to do is praise their children for good behavior.

If parents really need to punish their kids, they should try things like taking away smart phones and reminding them that good behavior will get them back. After all, ―we want to teach kids, not hurt them,‖ said Kazdin.

63. The underlined word ―insult‖ (i n Para. 3 ) probably means ―______‖.

B. challenge

C. offend

D.threaten

64. Using harsh words is harmful because it causes them ______.

B. to lose confidence

C. to become less sensitive

D. to do more dangerous things

65. In their research, Professor Ming-Te Wang and his colleagues ______.

A. asked kids how often they are yelled at by their parents

B. did research on kids from both two-parent families and single-parent families

C. required parents to make a list of their kids’ misbehaviors

D. recorded and analyzed the effects of harsh words on kids

66. According to the passage, the author supports .

A. Physical punishments from parents won’t do long-term damage to kids.

B. Praise from parents always works and leads to good behavior.

C. Harsh yelling has no effect on kids’ mi sbehavior at all.

D. Parents should encourage kids to make up for their mistakes through good behavior.

On Sept 24, an earthquake struck the southwest of Pakistan, taking more than 300 lives and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. But after the horrible disaster, people living by the coast received another shock – they saw a new island, which seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, in the sea just over a kilometer from the shore, reported BBC News.

―I stepped out and was flabbergasted,‖ local journal ist Bahram Baloch told the BBC. ―I could see

this gray, dome-shaped body in the distance, like a giant whale swimming near the surface. Hundreds of people gathered to watch it in disbelief.‖

This island has become a global curiosity. How was it formed in just a few minutes?

As you might already know, many islands in the sea are formed by volcanoes. There are numerous volcanoes under the sea. As the hot lava (岩浆) erupts and cools down, it piles up and forms the shape of a mountain. When the mountain ―grows‖ to higher than the sea level, the part that’s above the water is what we call an ―island‖.

This is how the island was formed after the Pakistan earthquake, except that instead of a ordinary volcano, it was a ―mud volcano‖ that brought about this island.

La va is not the only thing that’s locked under the Earth’s crust(地壳) – there is also gas. When an earthquake happens and breaks part of the crust, the gas is released at an extremely high speed, pushing mud up to the surface, according to National Geographic.

But only earthquakes that are extremely powerful can cause mud volcanoes to push up enough mud to produce islands –and this 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Pakistan was strong enough. The island is about 20 meters high, up to about 90 meters wide and 30 meters long, nearly the size of a soccer field.

In fact, mud volca no islands aren’t new. This is the fourth island of this kind in the region since 1945. But those islands usually didn’t last long.

―It will probably be gone within a couple of months,‖ said Bill Barnhart, a researcher with the US Geological Survey. After all, ―it’s just a big pile of mud that was on the seafloor that got pushed up‖.

67. What is the article mainly about?

A. the effects of the earthquake on Sept.24

B. the differences between mud volcanoes and ordinary volcanoes

C. the reasons for the formation of the new island

D. the suggestions about preventing an earthquake

68. The underlined word ―flabbergasted‖ (in Para.2) is closest in meaning to ―______‖.

A. surprised

B. frightened

C. worried

D. delighted

69. We can infer from the article that ______.

A. the new island formed within a few months

B. scientists know little about volcanoes

C. another earthquake is likely to happen in Pakistan

D. not all earthquakes produce new islands

70. According to the passage, mud volcano islands ______.

A. are quite difficult to locate

B. usually won’t exist a long time

C. are formed only by hot lava from volcanoes

D. used to be part of the Earth’s crust

There was a time when I was disappointed and helpless. It seemed that I was left out in school. I was faced with so many obstacles in study as well. Fortunately, I read a book about gratitude and life. It tells many stories about overcoming difficulties, in which a sentence moved me deeply: If you do think you are in Paradise, everywhere is paradise. If you do not think so, even when you are in Paradise, you will take no notice of it. The sentence gave me power and confidence. Before long I learned to taste the sweet of life.
