[15:17.43]PART ¢ò LISTENING COMPREHENSION

[15:21.56]In Sections A, B and C you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. [15:28.13]Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow. [15:31.97]Mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two. [15:37.37]SECTION A CONVERSATIONS

[15:40.37]In this section you will hear several conversations. [15:43.85]Listen to the conversations carefully

[15:46.17]and then answer the questions that follow.

[15:49.18]Questions 1 to 3 are based on the following conversation. [15:53.80]At the end of the conversation,

[15:55.48]you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. [15:58.93]Now, listen to the conversation.

[16:02.37]M: Ruth, do you know something about

[16:05.03]the Ethical Consumer Research Association?

[16:08.62]W: Yes. So far as I know, it?ˉs an organization

[16:11.18]that provides information for shoppers.

[16:15.09]M: Oh, what kind of information?

[16:17.00]W: Well, like letting shoppers know

[16:19.46]what the companies are doing behind the products

[16:21.70]that they see on the store shelves.

[16:23.72]And, and these shoppers are concerned with some ethical issues.

[16:29.14]M: For example?

[16:30.26]W: Well, they may want to know that the product

[16:32.65]they are buying hasn?ˉt been made at the expense of people [16:36.23]who are producing it, whether it?ˉs in this country or abroad.

[16:40.74]They might also be concerned with other kinds of issues, [16:43.80]for example, whether the company is involved in selling arms. [16:47.92]M: But, how can one become an ethical shopper when buying things?

[16:52.38]W: One way of thinking about ethical shopping

[16:55.14]is thinking about buying less.

[16:57.26]M: Oh, how?

[16:58.32]W: Well, you see sometimes we buy a lot more than we need. [17:02.35]We buy more items of clothing than we need.

[17:04.95]So being an ethical shopper really means

[17:07.54]thinking a bit before you go and spend your money in the shops.

[17:11.23]M: Could you give me some advice?

[17:13.38]W: You see, some things may cost a bit more in the short run,

[17:16.96]but be worth it in the long run. So if you are payi ng for quality,

[17:21.84]something will last you longer and then save your money. [17:24.43]M: Hmm.

[17:25.38]W: And sometimes you can buy things second-hand

[17:27.78]and the quality in most second-hand shops

[17:30.21]is really very good these days.

[17:32.71]So what?ˉs about thinking before you shop?

[17:35.18]M: Ruth, thanks for your advice.

[17:37.70]M: Pleasure.

[17:53.77]Questions 4 to 7 are based on the following conversation. [17:58.28]At the end of the conversation,

[17:59.95]you will be given 20 seconds to answer the questions. [18:03.49]Now, listen to the conversation.

[18:06.51]M: Come and sit down, Mary.

[18:08.10]W: Thanks, Mr. Davies.

[18:09.62]M: Now which course are you doing?

[18:11.40]W: I?ˉm doing management studies with English and Ger man. [18:14.91]M: Huh, how is it all going?

[18:16.87]W: Well, it?ˉs not going too well.

[18:19.92]I?ˉm not really enjoying the course and, well, I?ˉm not very happy.

[18:24.63]M: All right. Let?ˉs take things slowly.

[18:27.00]Tell me something about the course.

[18:28.61]W: Oh, there is so much work.

[18:32.26]I thought that to do two languages

[18:34.68]with management studies will be very useful.

[18:38.11]But I find the management course very difficult sometimes [18:41.55]and in the study of English and German, too.

[18:44.54]It means I?ˉm working all the time and I never have time to relax.

[18:49.59]M: What about your accommodation? Are you happy with that? [18:52.43]W: Not really. I mean the other students on my course [18:55.39]are living in a student dormitory.

[18:57.28]So they see each other all the time.

[18:59.93]I?ˉm living in a rented room in a family house.

[19:03.15]I eat breakfast and dinner with the family,

[19:06.41]but I get lonely in the evening and at weekends.

[19:09.09]M: So making friends is a problem, too.

[19:11.26]W: Yes.

[19:12.24]M: OK, I?ˉm going to make two suggestions.

[19:14.80]W: All right?

[19:15.63]M: First, which of the two languages do you enjoy most? [19:19.01]W: English. I find it easier, too.

[19:21.63]M: So I?ˉd like you to go and see your German tutor, [19:24.64]and say that you are going to stop

[19:26.17]attending German classes for the moment.

[19:28.75]W: OK.

[19:29.88]M: Next, I think you should go to each of the five student dormitories.

[19:33.75]Choose the one you like best and ask if you could move in there.

[19:37.25]Students are always moving in and out,

[19:39.22]so there shouldn?ˉt be a problem.

[19:40.49]W: Thanks a lot for your advice.

[19:42.04]M: Not at all.

[20:03.28]Questions 8 to 10 are based on the following conversation. [20:07.30]At the end of the conversation,

[20:09.23]you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. [20:12.79]Now, listen to the conversation.

[20:15.91]M: Hello, Evan.

[20:17.24]W: Hello, Bob.

[20:18.53]M: You know today is a very special day.

[20:21.31]That is the 20th anniversary of the World Wide Web.

[20:24.49]W: Ah, the World Wide Web.

[20:26.93]It?ˉs really changed our lives,

[20:29.19]and, and in such a short space of time.

[20:33.08]M: Hmm, definitely. Now do you know on average

[20:36.14]how long does someone spend surfing the net each day? [20:40.12]W: Umm, honestly I don?ˉt know.

[20:42.65]But I guess people must spend a lot of time on things like Facebook.

[20:46.25]M: Hmm, that?ˉs true.

[20:47.31]W: And I?ˉm sure almost everyone uses the Internet now. [20:51.02]But I wonder how we cope without it.

[20:53.86]M: Well it might be a bit difficult without it.

[20:56.25]W: I guess so. For instance,

[20:58.97]some people need it for social relationships.

[21:01.84]M: Yes, especially those who are far away.

[21:04.74]Keeping in contact with friends and family

[21:07.02]would be impossible without the Internet.

[21:10.17]W: But are there people who would cope without Internet? [21:14.04]M: Yes, there are. These people have some alternatives. [21:17.48]W: What kind?

[21:18.91]M: For example, we could write to each other

[21:20.93]like we used to before we have the Internet.

[21:23.94]It would be lovely to get more hand-written letters [21:26.45]from friends and family rather than just e-mails, I think. [21:31.03]W: That?ˉs what we call ?°snail mail?±.

[21:33.79]But of course, lots more paper would mean

[21:35.65]that we need bigger file cabinets.

[21:37.62]M: Yes, well, it?ˉs still incredible

[21:40.04]how the World Wide Web has expanded in 20 years

[21:43.47]and how much we now rely on it.

[21:46.40]I wonder what it would be like after another 20 years. [21:50.09]W: Well, for better or worse,

[21:52.62]the Web will have a greater impact on our life and society. [22:11.08]SECTION B PASSAGES

[22:13.66]In this section, you will hear several passages.

[22:17.46]Listen to the passages carefully

[22:19.42]and then answer the questions that follow.

[22:21.94]Questions 11 to 13 are based on the following passage. [22:26.40]At the end of the passage,

[22:28.21]you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. [22:31.46]Now, listen to the passage.

[22:34.45]If you are a resident, you?ˉll find it useful to open a bank account.

[22:38.71]All the large banks have a network of branches across the country

[22:42.60]and all offer similar services.

[22:45.43]A visit to any one of them will be a friendly experience. [22:49.18]However, to open an account,

[22:51.45]you have to be prepared to prove your identity in a number of ways.

[22:56.27]You?ˉll find your passport useful,

[22:58.76]but the bank will also want to see some form of proof that [23:02.17]you are living where you say you are.

[23:04.94]This can be proved by a housing rent book, a tax form, [23:08.43]water or electricity bill for the property,

[23:11.55]as long as it?ˉs in your name.

[23:14.15]In a bank and elsewhere, you may hear the term ?°utility bill?±?a

[23:18.75]this simply refers to bills relating

[23:20.86]to the provision of services to your home,

[23:23.56]such as electricity, gas, water and telephone.

[23:27.86]There are other local facilities,

[23:30.51]such as post offices, where you can save your money

[23:33.02]and have access to affordable low cost loans.

[23:37.05]Where they exist in your local area,

[23:39.30]contact details can be obtained from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

[23:58.57]Questions 14 to 17 are based on the following passage. [24:03.26]At the end of the passage,

[24:04.93]you will be given 20 seconds to answer the questions. [24:08.26]Now, listen to the passage.

[24:11.40]Life is very stressful nowadays,

[24:13.90]so it is useful for us to talk about how to cope with stress. [24:19.80]If you want to reduce some stress,

[24:21.97]you can reduce this by the word S-T-R-E-S-S,

[24:26.83]that?ˉs stress. Let?ˉs begin with the ?°S?±.

[24:30.76]?°S?± is that you can have the ?°scheduling?±,

[24:34.06]for example, you don?ˉt have to schedule too many things in your day

[24:38.31]and if you feel you are too busy, you can cut out an activity or two.

[24:43.85]And ?°T?± is ?°treat your body well?±,

[24:46.78]because experts say that exercise can reduce stress

[24:50.07]and also if you eat healthy food,

[24:52.78]then your brain and your body get the nourishment they need. [24:56.57]The next letter is ?°R?±. ?°R?± means ?°relax?±.

[25:00.96]You can do an activity you enjoy or that relaxes you,

[25:05.10]maybe you can read a book or learn a new hobby

[25:08.25]and even spend time with your pet

[25:10.41]and that could make a difference. And the next letter is ?°E?±.

[25:15.35]?°E?± is about expectations.

[25:17.89]This means ?°be realistic about yourself and others?±. [25:22.13]So you can just do your best

[25:24.24]and don?ˉt try to be perfect and don?ˉt expect others to be, too.

[25:28.97]That will release and reduce a lot of stress

[25:31.82]for you and the people around you.

[25:35.18]And the next letter is ?°S?±. ?°S?± stands for ?°sleep?±. [25:39.55]If you get a good night?ˉs sleep,

[25:41.62]then it will keep your mind and your body in shape.

[25:45.52]And the last letter is ?°S?± again, which means ?°smile?±. [25:48.86]If you smile and have confidence,

[25:51.57]you?ˉll think in a more positive way

[25:53.65]and then you?ˉll feel more comfortable

[25:55.36]when you are coping with the stress.

[26:17.82]Questions 18 to 20 are based on the following passage. [26:22.13]At the end of the passage,

[26:23.50]you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. [26:27.03]Now, listen to the passage.

[26:30.05]New words enter the English language all the time.

[26:33.33]In fact, English has always been in a state of evolution. [26:37.34]And in recent years, more and more words

[26:40.16]and phrases have entered the language.

[26:42.84]But where do all these new words come from?

[26:45.99]Words come out of the culture that they represent and they describe.

[26:50.21]So if you?ˉve got a new development in medicine,

[26:53.43]for example bird flu, then you?ˉll get a new word coming out of that.

[26:57.79]If there?ˉs a military conflict

[26:59.61]that may well bring all sorts of new words to the fore. [27:03.36]Going back in time£?the First and Second World Wars were times

[27:08.06]of great creativity of language because people

[27:10.47]from different countries met each other

[27:12.79]and exchanged their words and words developed from there. [27:16.89]So words come from the playground. They come from politics. [27:21.55]They come from any area of life

[27:23.95]because every area of life is changing from day to day. [27:28.56]And does English have more words than any other languag e?

[27:32.19]It certainly has more than other European languages

[27:35.27]and probably more than any other language in the world. [27:39.20]English is put together from so many different bits. [27:42.70]Originally it was a Germanic language

[27:45.29]and then after the Norman Conquest in 1066

[27:49.24]there was an enormous influx of French words.

[27:52.74]And it comes from a country, the United Kingdom,

[27:55.66]which was quite an expansive, trading,

[27:58.70]colonial power in the past and all these

[28:01.21]have brought all sorts of other new words into the language. [28:19.79]SECTION C NEWS BROADCAST

[28:23.25]In this section, you will hear several news items.

[28:27.08]Listen to them carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

[28:30.96]Questions 21 and 22 are based on the following news. [28:35.56]At the end of the news item,

[28:37.46]you will be given 10 seconds to answer the questions. [28:40.59]Now, listen to the news.

[28:43.53]A huge storm that collapsed part of a cliff on Israel?ˉs central coast

[28:47.94]led to the discovery of a statue dating back to the Roman period,

[28:52.32]the Israel Antiquities Authority said Tuesday.

[28:55.88]The white marble statue of a woman

[28:57.47]is estimated to be 2,000 years old.

[29:00.87]It stands 1.2 meters tall, weighs about 200 kilograms [29:06.06]and was found with no head or arms,

[29:08.80]according to a news release by the authority.

[29:12.06]A person walking on the shore at Ashkelon

[29:15.16]on the west coast of Jerusalem made the discovery,

[29:18.46]the authority said. The statue fell into the sea

[29:22.08]when the cliff collapsed as a result of the storm.

[29:25.17]The collapse also ruined a bath house and mosaics

[29:28.74]that had been in the cliff for many hundreds of years. [29:32.28]The storm, one of the strongest Israel

[29:34.48]has experienced in recent years,

[29:36.56]brought winds of more than 100 kilometer per hour

[29:39.53]that sent 10-meter waves crashing into Israel?ˉs coast. [29:54.16]Questions 23 and 24 are based on the following news. [29:58.67]At the end of the news item,

[30:00.68]you will be given 10 seconds to answer the questions. [30:03.31]Now, listen to the news.

[30:06.11]Canadian police and military teams were working Tuesday afternoon

[30:09.75]to rescue about 300 people stranded after what a local official

[30:14.01]termed the most brutal storm to hit the Ontario region in 25 years.

[30:19.49]Some people had been stuck in their vehicles for more than 24 hours

[30:23.52]following blinding snow that piled up so high

[30:26.94]it made it almost impossible to open vehicle doors.

[30:30.61]Ontario Provincial Police initially reported

[30:33.43]about 360 vehicles and about 300 people had been stranded near Sarnia,

[30:40.30]Ontario, on Highway 402?aa major thoroughfare

[30:43.62]linking the U.S.-Canada border to London, Ontario.

[30:46.80]Some of those people have since been rescued,

[30:49.10]but Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said

For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Nothing Succeeds Without a Strong Will by commenting on the humorous saying, "Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I've done it hundreds of times." You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) Why Integrity Matters What is Integrity? The key to integrity is consistency--not only setting high personal standards for oneself (honesty, responsibility, respect for others, fairness) but also living up to those standards each day. One who has integrity is bound by and follows moral and ethical standards even when making life's hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical standards? We feel disappointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse of integrity also affects our relationships with others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus, integrity must be one of our most important goals. Risky Business We are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision-making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by understanding why we acted as we did, and then exploring ways to avoid similar problems in the future. Making ethical decisions is a critical part of avoiding future problems. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we can't see the risks we're taking, we can't make responsible choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesn't know the rules about plagiarism may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit, or one who fails to keep careful research notes may unintentionally fail to quote and cite sources as required. But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct. Ignorance is not a defense. "But Everybody Does It" Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts, but manage to fool themselves about the risks they're taking by using excuses: "Everyone else does it," "I'm not hurting anyone," or "I really need this grade." Excuses can get very elaborate: "I know I'm looking at another's exam, even though I'm supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that's not cheating because I'm just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions, and avoid excuses. If we fool ourselves into believing we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choice we're making--and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watching over your shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamed of your actions? If you'd rather hide your actions, that's a good indication that you're taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.
