B). C). and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Question 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearances and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I look stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feeling must affect people adversely. A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all the areas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they feel they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliments because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a compliment with a statement like this one: “You are just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. For example, most people would like to be “A” students in every subject. It is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have difficulty in some areas. People’s expectations of themselves must be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inadequacy.

Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

21. What does the author try to confer by citing “what kind of impression am I making”?

A) shy people benefit from their caring about their appearances

B) the shyness of people made them care too much about their own appearances

and actions

C) it’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments

D) shy people are very considerate

22. According to the writer, self-awareness is _______.

A) a good quality B) the cause of unhappiness

C) harmful to people D) a weak point of shy people

23. Shy people’s reaction to compliments is that ________.

A)they are glad

B) they feel it is not true

C) they are very sensitive to it

D) they feel it confirms their inferiority

24. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A) Shyness helps us to develop our potential.

B) Shyness enables us to understand ourselves better.

C) Shyness blocks our chances for a rich life.

D) Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem.

25. It can be inferred from the passage that shy people______

A)should find more of their weakness

B) should understand themselves in a right way

C) had better ignore their weakness

D) can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteem

Passage Two

Question 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

Life really should be one long journey of joy for children who are born with a world wealth at their tiny feet. But experts on psychological research now believe that silver spoons can leave a bitter taste. If suicide statistics are a sign of happiness, then the rich are a miserable lot. Figures show that it is the rich who most often do away with themselves.

Dr. Robert Coles, an internationally famous doctor, is the world's top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-received book on the subject, The Privileged(享有特权的) Ones, and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. "Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work expectation. But most important is the quality of family life. Money cannot buy love.”

It can buy a lot of other things, though, and that’s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Their parents’over favoring can make them spoiled. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which often makes them feel restless.

“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,”adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.”

Today’s rich parents perhaps have realized that their riches can be more of a burden than a favor to their children. So their priority is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

A) It is love that is always lacking in rich and poor families alike.

B) Silver spoons can sometimes leave a bitter taste.

C) Money cannot buy everything.

D) Rich children are often confused because they have so much to choose from.

29. The expression “silver spoons” in paragraph 1 means ____.

A) very expensive spoons B) rich people

C) wealth D) spoons made of silver

30. This article is written mainly to tell readers that ____.

A) the rich are more likely to do away with themselves

B) money can bring a lot of things, including love

C) life is always happy for children of rich parents

D) rich parents should realize what is important in the family is love rather than

money

Passage 3

Question 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

Mrs. Wilson, a Cree Indian in her sixties, was looking for a home to rent. She heard that one was available in an ideal location, close to the Calgary core.

Mrs. Wilson and her daughters went to look at the house. Sure enough, there was a “For Rent” sign in the window. A woman next door told them that the owner was Antonio Pompei, who owned a bakery (面包房) farther up the street.

Mrs. Wilson has great difficulty walking for she is almost blind, so she waited in the car while her daughters went along to the bakery. The daughters met Mr. Pompei, who agreed to rent the house. However, the daughters wanted to see the inside of the house before they agreed to rent it. One of the bakery employees went with them to the house, where he met Mrs. Wilson. All three women liked the house and returned to the bakery to tell Mr. Pompei that they would rent it.

When Mr. Pompei saw Mrs. Wilson, he quickly walked out of the bakery. He had not realized that Mrs. Wilson was Indian. Her daughters looked more like their father, who is of a different ethnic origin The next day, Mrs. Wilson and her daughters returned to the bakery in an attempt to rent the house. Because of her blindness, Mrs. Wilson was helped out of the car and guided into the bakery by one of her daughters. Mr. Pompei told the women that the house was already rented.

The Wilsons suspected discrimination (歧视). As soon as they got home, Mrs.

Wilson phoned Mr. Pompei, without identifying herself, and asked about the house. He said it was still available. When Mrs. Wilson identified herself, Mr. Pompei got very angry.

Passage 4

Question 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

For years men and women have been getting married. They say their wedding vows that bring them together as one. They promise to love and cherish each other until death do them part.

A man may select a woman because he, in his own eyes, sees her as the

just-right wife for him. Every man has his own definition of what his “just-right” wife is. For instance, the millionaire man and the poor man both may define their just-right wife according to her physical qualities.

A millionaire may describe his “just-right” wife as beautiful, sexy, intelligent, and well developed. On the other hand, a poor man may define his “just-right” wife as pleasing, desirable, knowledgeable, and shapely. Both men describe their just-right wife by the same physical qualities but use different words. The millionaire’s definition of the just-right wife is more elegant, whereas the poor man’s definition is a more common, everyday description.

Although some men define the just-right wife by her physical qualities, other men describe their just-right wife by her other qualities. For instance, consider the fit man and fat man. The fit man may describe his just-right wife as a woman who gets up every weekday morning at 6 o’clock and runs two to three miles. She prepares breakfast, takes the children to school then goes to work. After work, she goes to exercise class, picks the children up from school on her way home, and then cooks dinner. After dinner, she cleans the kitchen, bathes the children, and puts them to bed.

On the other hand, the fat man defines his just-right wife as a woman who gets up at 8 o’clock in the morning, takes the children to McDonald’s for breakfast, and drops them off at school. She then comes back home and lies on the coach watching soap operas all day. The children have to walk home from school in the afternoon. When they arrive at home, she fixes some hotdogs for dinner. Both men define their just-right wife with qualities that they admire within themselves.

Para. Para. Para. Para. Para. Para.

Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Proactive Strategies to Build a Social Life A) A lot of people believe that developing a social life is something that should just happen and develop naturally, without you needing to do anything. I disagree. I think that while this can happen for some folks, in certain stages of their life, it’s not always the case, which is why many of us today lack a fulfilling social life. If you’re in college where you get to hang around lots of other people and you’re naturally a social person, your social circle will develop on its own. But if you’re an accountant working in cubicle all day and you’re kind of shy and don’t go out much, your social life may be seriously deficient. B) In my view, building a social life requires the same active and strategic approach that making money or building a career requires. The approach is based on setting goals and acting on them. Coming from this angle, I want to show you some proactive (积极主动的) strategies to build a social life. C) A fulfilling social life looks differently for different people. Some of us need lots of friends and a large social circle. Some of us are more fond of having just a few friends, but who are very close to us. And some prefer a mix of the two. What is your preference Do you know Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like.
