Underwater Cables
Introduction The MacArtney Group depends on the support of a number of major cable manufacturers to supply a range of cables that are designed, manufactures and tested to meet the highest demands of the underwater technology industry. The product range includes ROV,
oceanographic geophysical, fibre optic, TV, telecommunication, fishery and sonar cables.
A number of "standard" cables are held in stock but the majority of cables are manufactured to order and can include special cable engineering and design. Quality and testing are
maintained to the highest standard in the industry. MacArtney supply engineering services and components to integrate total cable solution packages. Complimentary products and services include winches, slip rings, cable protections, fairing, electrical and optical connec-tors, penetrators, buoyancy, cable and termination engineering, pressure testing, dynamic testing, tension cable spooling and hydrodynamic studies.
Oceanographic & Tow Cables
Our program for these cables covers most of the market demands. These
include long steel armoured tow cables for sophisticated military arrays to
short lengths of instrument cables for CTD probes. There are a number of
industry standards and we try to support the market with cable stocks at
strategic locations where cables can be terminated at short notice. Fibre
optic cables are playing an increasingly important role in this section of
the market and our in-house engineering can support our customers
with cable and termination designs and advise on tow characteristics etc.
Video System Umbilicals
The advances in underwater vision systems have developed
dramatically over the years. This has led to new designs in
cables using sophisticated transmission systems with
multiple broad band channels. We supply traditional diver,
sewer inspection and well head TV system cables but
we are also involved in the development and production
of long cable fibre optic transmission systems for
security systems, ROV & ROTV systems, under-
water trenchers and ploughs.
Sonar & Acoustic System Cables
Historically side scan sonar systems were towed by multi-core steel or aramide
armoured cables. Although these cable types are still an industry standard, there has been an upsurge in acoustic, digital and telemetry technology which demand a new
approach to cable engineering. We supply the complete range of cables for acoustic
applications including armoured coaxial cables for side scan and fisheries net
sounder systems and fibre optic tow cables for the most advanced acoustic
systems. The most recent development from MacArtney is the NEXUS fibre optic
telemetry system specifically designed to meet a growing market demand for
integrating advanced multi-beam sonar systems to existing ROV and ROTV
systems where only a single optical fibre is available in the umbilical.

MacArtney
Introduction
During the last 25 years the MacArtney Group has obtained extensive experience in
terminations ranging from small uncomplicated neoprene mouldings to large heavy-duty
steel terminations with several hundred conductors and connections.MacArtney has the
facilities for manufacturing mouldings in neoprene, PUR and PE.These mouldings have
different advantages depending on the application for which it is required.
Stress terminations have also been a part of the MacArtney product range during the
years with breaking strengths from a few hundred kilos up to 90 tons and in varying
stress member materials such as steel, Kevlar, polyester etc.
Over the last 15 years MacArtney has developed a fibre optic department specialising
in fibre optic cables, slip rings, connectors, multiplexers and penetrators.
All terminations are manufactured according to DS/EN ISO 9001:2000 and are tested in
our in-house test facilities including dimensional tests, pull tests, various electrical tests,
fibre optical tests and pressure testing up to 600 bars.
Our customers include institutes, diving companies, oil companies, ROV operators,
military etc.
Standard Steel Termination
The most common standard steel termination in the MacArtney range is the fork-
termination, which will allow you to make terminations to either steel armoured or
Kevlar armoured cables in the range of 6-14 mm OD to carry loads up to 1250 kg
and make sure that you transfer the full strength as the Safe Working Load (SWL).
The standard steel terminations is a safe and reliable way to hook-up your cable
to your system for towing after a vessel or lifting a heavy object such as a down
hole camera system.
In most cases the cable end is terminated and moulded to a connector and
thereby making the cable termination completely watertight.
Chamber Terminations
T ermination of special fibre optic and electrical steel armoured cables to
special customer designed connectors is one of the many strengths of
MacArtney. On steel armoured cables the mechanical stress termination is
done by using cone metal parts or wire lock thereby making it possible to
transfer the whole force from the cable to the steel parts.
T erminating a cable to a special designed connector can be done by
using a chamber termination where you hook-up the cable to the
connector inside the chamber. The chambers can be rated and certified
for up to 300 bars. The advantage of using a chamber termination
is that it makes it relatively easy to replace connectors and cable
and at the same time making it possible to re-use the steel parts.
Oil Compensation
The oil compensated steel termination basically works like
the chamber termination;the only difference is that the
chamber is oil filled. The oil compensation is either
controlled through a bladder or an external reservoir.
The advantage of using an oil compensated
system is that the system can be certified for up
to 600 bars complete with fibre optic and
electrical connectors for up to 4.5 kV and
thereby meeting the demands of
deep water operations.

Bend Restrictors and Bend Stiffeners When making a steel termination to a cable and operating it offshore on a vessel, the way to get the assembly overboard is by using a Cable Overboard Unit (COU) or a cable sheave. This can to some extend introduce a sharp bend of the cable in the joint between the cable and the steel part. The sharp bending of the cable can be minimised by using a bend stiffener or a bend restrictor/Armadillo.The bend restrictor will only allow the cable to bend to a certain angle where it will be stopped mechanically. The bend stiffener will make it more difficult to bend the cable as you have the outer reinforcement either in Neoprene or PUR mounted onto your cable, which will allow more force to be used on the cable before it will bend. The advantage of using either of the two solutions is a longer cable lifetime.
PE Mouldings MacArtney provides solutions for terminating cables with a PE jacket to a steel termination by using a special hot moulding machine, where PE moulding material is forced into the moulding form under high pressure.A high pressure moulding to a PE jacketed cable makes sure that the bonding between the cable and steel parts is certified for use at up to 600 bars.T oday many cables for deep water use are made with a PE jacket and the possibility of making a watertight connection between without the use of an oil compensated system will reduce the cost.
Penetrators MacArtney has a long history of making standard and customer designed penetrators for various solutions in both extreme and more “normal”conditions.A penetrator is build up over a metal part with or without a water-block inside depending on the application. The bonding between the cable and metal parts is done with either a PUR or a PE moulding depending on the cable type. The penetrators can be made with electrical cables, fibre optic cables or a combination of both.A penetrator makes it easy to hook-up equipment without using connectors. The advantage of not using connectors in the system, especially for fibre optic transmissions, is that it will minimise the attenuation loss.
Extension and Take Out of Fibre Optic and Electrical Cables MacArtney A/S has many years of experience in extension of fibre optic and electrical cables. This technology is used were cables are damaged or have to be extended in order to reach new locations. The termination is usually designed to meet the same SWL and depth rating as the cable.T ake outs are often used in fibre optic and electrical structural monitoring systems where take outs are needed in several positions on the main cable.T ake out and connectors are often designed for a life time of 10 to 15 years in sea water.

Introduction
In 1978 LVMM in Burwell, Nebraska and MacArtney A/S in Denmark entered in to a unique production and marketing agreement which has survived the test of time.
?Today the Subconn underwater plugable electrical connector is an industry
standard accepted worldwide as a reliable, affordable and available product. In early 1999, Subconn Inc. was established, as a joint venture, to serve the market in the Americas directly with the headquarters at the new manufacturing plant and a marketing organization based in Boston MA. The products are supported internationally by the MacArtney Group.
?
Subconn Micro Series
Over recent years underwater instruments have reduced in size due to advances in electronic and software technology. The market demand for compact, reliable underwater mateable rubber moulded electrical connectors ?has increased. In order to meet these demands, the Subconn range was extended to include the Micro series using proven contact technology. The series configuration extends from 2 to 16 contacts in standard in-line and bulkhead versions rated to full ocean depth. Micro low profile connectors are also available in 3, 7 and 9 pin. ?Subconn Standard Circular Series
?This was the first Subconn series to be introduced to the market and
today it still represents the bulk of sales. The connector is used
extensively in diving, ROV, ocean science and underwater video
applications with sales increasing in industrial and leisure markets.
Standard products range from 2 to 16 contacts in 3 shell sizes rated
at 15 Amp @ 600 V. Bulkhead and in-line connectors are standard
and usually supplied with locking sleeves and pressure proof
dummy plugs.
?
