BEIJING, April 14-Thousands of dolphins stopped the suspected Somali pirate(海盗)ships when they were trying to attack Chinese merchant (商业的) ships passing the Gulf of Aden, the China Radio International reported on Monday.
The Chinese merchant ships which were escorted by a China's fleet(舰队)sailed on the Gulf of Aden when they met some suspected pirate ships. Thousands of dolphins suddenly jumped out of water and stopped the pirate ships from getting close to the Chinese ships.
The suspected pirate ships stopped and then turned away, The pirates could only cry for their littleness before the great number of dolphins. The amazing scene continued for a while.
China first sent its three-ship fleet on Dec. 26 last year after the United Nations Security Council called on countries to patrol(巡逻) the waters off Somalia.
China's first fleet has escorted 206 ships, including 29 foreign merchant ships, and successfully saved three foreign merchant ships from pirate attacks.
About 20 percent of Chinese merchant ships passing through the waters off Somalia were attacked by pirates from January to November in 2008, before the fleet was sent there.
A total of seven ships, either owned by China or carrying Chinese goods and sailors，were hijacked(劫持).

Does handwriting have a practical use today? Do we really need it? Many educators say yes. Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce a child’s chance of becoming short-sighted, a research shows. It challenges (挑战) the belief that short- sightedness is caused by computer use, watching TV or reading in weak light.
The Australian government researchers believe that sunlight is good for people’s eyes. They compared the vision(视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In most situations, light helps us see. But nowadays humans are using too much of it so that it is in fact a kind of pollution.
When it comes to looking at the night sky, too much light makes it difficult for us to watch some of life’s most wonderful sights: stars, planets and even g alaxies(星系).
According to scientific research, about 2, 500 stars can be seen by the human eye without using any special equipment(设备). But because of light pollution, you can only see 200 to 300 stars from today’s countryside, and no more than ten stars f rom a city. In choosing Steven Chu as his energy secretary（能源部长）,Barack Obama has chosen one of the most prominent U.S. scientists of using science to deal with global warming（全球变暖）.
Steven Chu was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1948. His father was a college teacher. At that time, they were only the third Chinese family to live there.In high school, Chu played tennis and was on the school club. He took his first physics class in his senior year at Garden City High school and became interested in it.
Steven Chu got his first doctor’s degree in maths and physics in 1970 . Then he went to California for another doctor’s degree.In 1978, Chu worked in Bell Lab where he developed ways to cool and trap atoms using a laser（用激光冷却和俘获原子）.In 1997, he got the Nobel Prize for physics for this.
