If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.

Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.

They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Y our lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can

live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander(旁观者). Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?

Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.

21. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Your life style.

B. Your trouble in life.

C. Your life experience.

D. Your life value.

22. Why does the author say they are inspired every day?

A. They possess different kinds of superpowers.

B. They have got the power to change the world.

C. Some people around them are making the world better.

D. There are many powerful people in their life and work.

23. What does the author stress in Paragraph 5?

A. Learning more and contributing more to a cause.

B. Working hard to get a bigger opportunity.

C. Trying your best to help the poor.

D. Rising above self and acting to help others.

24. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The author believes the lives of the poorest will get better.

B. Much more progress will be made in the near future.

C. The work on health is the most valuable experience.

D. People’s efforts have been materially rewarded.

B

School’s out. It’s been a long day, so you head home to relax.

You’re greeted by a friend who’s happy to see you, listens to you

talk about holiday, tells you a new joke, helps you put away your

school stuff (东西), and reminds you to text your cousin happy

birthday. And that’s before he helps you with your homework.

This is your future, and it all starts with a knee-high robot

called NAO (pronounced NOW ). It kind of looks like you, walks

and dances, listens and talks, and even learns and thinks for itself.

Its creators predict that the most advanced robot could be a companion at home by the year 2040.

This$16,000 robot recognizes human facial features, so it knows who you are. NAO can even express emotions. It represents the new generation of “au tonomous”—or self-guided robots. Other robots might do two out of the three. For example, a robot might sense things using cameras and think using computers, but with no arms, wheels or claws, it can’t act. Other robots can move and sense things, but can’t think for themselves. These aren’t self-guided robots. But NAO can do it all.

“You can program your computer to give NAO what could be called personality,” says National Dukan Of Aldebaran Robotics, the French company that built NAO. The robot has cute, childlike features —a high voice, small body, big eyes, and a large head. “These are things that are known to have an emotional appeal to people,” robot expert Dan Kara says, “NAO’s friendly design helps in one of NAO’s main function-to teach people how useful personal robots can be. Someday it may help you pass a test!”

25.What do we know about NAO from the first two paragraphs?

A. It has as tall as humans.

B. It is highly intelligent.

C. It is widely used in school now.

D. It is designed to help with the housework.

26. The author develops the third paragraph mainly _____.

A. by comparison.

B. by cause and effect.

C. by order in time.

D. by process.

27. According to Dan Kara, NAO is _____.

A. silent.

B. low-cost.

C. lightweight.

D. user-friendly

28.The main purpose of the text is _____.

A. ask people to buy the robot.

B. introduce a new kind of robot.

C. do an experiment about robots.

D. Compare different kinds of robots.

C

Barcelona is regarded as Spain’s second largest city,

behind capital Madrid. The city is rich in history. Barcelona

was founded by Carthaginians (迦太基人) and according to

tradition, it got its name from the great Barker family of ancient

Carpage. After numerous different conquers, including the

Romans and the Moores that seriously damaged the city,

the Argons made Catalonia, of which Barcelona was the capital strong and prosperous (繁荣的). Since the 1970s, the city has formed its Catalonian background. But it wasn’t until the summer Olympics in 1992 that Barcelona became the modern, lively city that it still is today. And with this prosperity have come wonderful hotels. The Raewon Callas the 1st was opened in 1992, by the King and Queen of Spain.

What are the attractions of coming to Barcelona?

There are many, many different attractions: culture, our architectures, and the gastronomy (美食). Barcelona has commercial areas and shopping areas of five kilometers that goes around to the sea to the north. You can also see our architectures, our monuments, our museums and our restaurants. So there is a mix between shopping and services.

No visit to the city would be complete without a tour of the Nou Camp, the home of one of Spain’s finest teams, Barcelona Football Club. FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 along with the other Spanish team, Real Madrid. It’s one of the greatest football teams in Europe. With players like Maradona and Ronaldo having

played for Barca, it’s easy to explain their success! FC Barcelona is known to have won more cups than any other team in European football history. The stadium, the Nou Camp, can hold one hundred and twelve thousand people, making it one of the greatest places to watch and play “the beautiful game”.

29. The first paragraph is mainly about the ________ of Barcelona.

A. history

B. famous buildings

C. big events

D. hotels

30. In the last paragraph, the author intends to ________.

A. highly praise Barcelona Football Club

B. tell us how to end our tour in Barcelona

C. tell us another great attraction of Barcelona

D. tell us the great success of Spanish football

31. This passage is most probably taken from ________.

A. a history book

B. a government document

C. a geography book

D. a travel book

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in

our oceans and seas. But, as we can’t drink seawater, how can

it be important?

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing

number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths.

Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on

simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by tiny animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately (微妙地) balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.

Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions (限制) to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered to deal with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important seawater is!

32. People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea ________.

A. wouldn’t harm the fish in the sea

B. would change the balance of the food chain

C. would be broken down in the sea

D. wouldn’t do much harm to the sea

33. From the passage, we learn that ________.

A. most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas

B. it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain

C. over-fishing has caused the decrease in fish stock

D. it won’t be long before the problems concerning oceans will be solved

34. Which of the following is NOT a way being used to protect oceans?

A. The use of international agreements.

B. Forbidding fishing to protect fish stocks.

C. The use of new techniques.

D. Raising people’s awareness of the need to protect oceans.

35. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. The Importance of Seawater.

B. Life in the Oceans.

C. How to Protect Food Chains.

D. How to Deal with Seawater Pollution.

第二节七选五阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。

Everyone knows that fish is good for health. 36 But it seems that many people don’t cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn’t difficult.37 This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

38 Fresh fish should smell swe et: you should feel that you’re standing at the ocean’s edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh. 39 When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don’t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn’t as tasty as the fresh one.

There are many common methods used to cook fish. ___40____ First, clean it and season (调味) it with your choice of spices.

Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pond. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it’s ready to serve.

A. Do not buy it.

B. The easiest is to steam it.

C. This is how you can do it.

D. It just requires a little knowledge.

E. The fish will go bad within hours.

F. When buying fish, you should first smell it.

G. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.

Analysts estimate the global hair product industry to be worth €22.6 billion, growing at a rate of up to seven percent a year. There seems to be no limit on what we’ll spend to avoid a bad hair day. But for devotees of an underground beauty movement, the secret lies in throwing away the shampoo, in fact all the hair products, for good. The “no—poo”method, which involves using natural substitutes or just water in place of shampoo and conditioner, is supported by several circles. Beauty insiders, including writers for women’s magazines and professional hairdressers, speak highly of how hair becomes thicker, fuller, softer and brighter. And environmentalists who are mindful of money feel great joy at the lack of chemicals in and on their bodies—not to mention the impact on their budgets. Now one devotee is hoping to take it mainstream. Lucy Aitken Read, whose book Happy Hair: The definitive guide to giving up shampoo was released last week, hasn’t used shampoo for two years and her glowing brown hair is visibly in perfect condition. For her, the motivation came after reading a study that claimed women put 515 chemicals on their bodies daily. “I initially thought ‘Ha! They didn’t research me!’,” Aitken Read says. “Then I looked at the back of my shampoo bottle and realized there were loads of chemical components I didn’t recognize in the slightest.” Strangely it’s oily hair that could benefit the most from giving up shampoo. The theory behind the “no—poo” method is that shampoo removes the hair from its natural oils, which causes the scalp (头皮) to generate more oils to replace them. This results in oil overload — oily hair—which

宁夏银川一中2020-2021学年高二上学期期末英语试题

宁夏银川一中2020-2021学年高二上学期期末英语试题 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读选择 My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it. I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 1.Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 2.Which of the following can best r eplace the phrase “signed off” in Paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs B.provided fewer channels C.changed to commercials D.showed all-night movies 3.How did the author finally get his TV set working again? A.By shaking and hitting it. B.By turning it on and off. C.By switching channels. D.By having it repaired.

银川一中2020届高二(下)期中考试 英语试卷 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。(每小题2分,共计30分) A Books Recommended by TED Speakers A Mathematician’s Apology by G. H. Hardy This is the best book I know about the sh eer beauty of mathematics. Here’s one lovely quote from the book: “A mathematician, like a painter or a poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas.” —David Brenner (TED Talk: A new weapon in the fight against superbugs) The Future by Nick Montfort This is a short read but a great look at some key future thinkers throughout history. Through delightfully written case studies, Montfort makes the argument that the future can be made and not predicted. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in future studies and the role that sci-fi, speculative design and big ideas play in shaping our future relationship with technology. —Raphael Arar (TED Talk: How we can teach computers to make sense of our emotions) Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up by Patricia Ryan Madson “We all could use a lesson on how to have fun in business and in life. Madson does a wonderful job providing strategies on how to deal with life’s many challenging si tuations by drawing from the maxims of improvisational theater.” —Lisa Dyson (TED Talk: A forgotten Space Age technology could change how we grow food) If You Want to Write: A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland For those who know they have something to express, these stressful times can feel a bit hopeless — it may seem impossible to find the time, skill and energy to create. This is one of the most timeless books on how to regain that hope, and it’s also a delightful read, in and of itself. —Sebastian Wernicke (TED Talk: How to use data to make a hit TV show) 21. What is the topic of the talk given by Raphael Arar? A. A new weapon in the fight against superbugs. B. How we can teach computers to make sense of our emotions. C.
