BEIJING - Members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee gathered on Saturday to study and exchange opinions on the spirit of the 18th CPC National Congress which concluded on November 14.
The meeting was presided over by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. In his speech at the meeting, Xi called for efforts to uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics, as it is the theme of the report to the 18th CPC National Congress, which was delivered by Hu Jintao on November 8.
Xi called on the whole Party to firmly adhere to this theme and better study, understand and implement the spirit of the 18th national congress. People both in and outside China are keeping a close eye on the first steps of the new leadership after the 18th CPC National Congress, and this meeting on the study and implementation of the congress spirit is our first step," Xi said.
The report to the 18th CPC National Congress outlined a blueprint for China, under new circumstances, to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects, advance the socialist modernization and win new victory for socialism with Chinese characteristics, Xi said.
Socialism with Chinese characteristics is the underlying achievement gained by the Party and the people through long time of practices, and is the banner under which the Party and the people unite themselves, strive and win. This banner should be held high and adhered to in the country's efforts to build a moderately prosperous society in all respects, advance the socialist modernization and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Xi said.
Xi also noted that socialism with Chinese characteristics should be regarded as an incorporation of socialist system, path and theories with Chinese characteristics.
Xi called on Party members to be fully aware of the basic reality is that China is still in the primary stage of socialism. He told the Party members to keep in mind that the Party's overall approach is to promote economic development tuned together with political, cultural, social, and ecological progress, and that its general task is to improve the people's livelihoods, make the country more prosperous and achieve the great renewal of the Chinese nation.
Furthermore, Xi urged efforts to ensure that the CPC remains at the core of leadership in advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics by firmly practicing the requirements in the Party construction, keeping the closest ties with the people, maintaining health of Party organs, as well as continuously improving the Party leadership and governance capacity and enhancing the Party's capability to combat corruption and moral degeneration and stand risks.

A boy is stranded (困住) alone in a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He is hanging on tightly to an oar, not noticing sunset or daybreak. There is a tiger in front of him and sharks beneath him, and the boy does not know what to do.
This is the desperate situation faced by Pi, a 16-year-old Indian teenager, who is the main character in Ang Lee’s new movie Life of Pi (《少年派的奇幻漂流》). The film, based on a book, will come out in

Pi’s story is an adventurous one. He lives in a town in southern India. When Pi was younge r, his father ran a zoo, and having grown up with animals, Pi knows how to keep them under control. However, after the financial crisis, Pi’s comfortable life comes to an end. His father closes the zoo and moves the family to Canada. The family and many of the animals board a ship for their trip. Unfortunately, the ship is hit by a fierce storm and sinks. When the air clears, the only survivors sharing space on a small lifeboat are Pi, a zebra, a hyena, a gorilla, and the most dangerous of all, a huge tiger. The first week in the boat is horrific, because the animals are battling for survival. Pi trembles with fear and manages to avoid being part of the food chain. Eventually, just the tiger and he are left.
The rest of the movie focuses on his 277-day experience at sea. He realizeds that his only hope for survival is to keep the tiger happy. Although he lives in constant terror, Pi manages to provide the tiger with fish, turtles and fresh water. Pi spends most of his time in despair(绝望), yet he refuses to give up and die. Instead, he lives by his wits(智慧) and determination.

The iPhone 5 is a thing of beauty, writes MATT SUN, with sophisticated engineering, a faster processor and more features than its predecessors
APPLE’S iPhone 5 is a beautifully engineered handset with new features including three microphones and noise-cancelling technology.
The most obvious change is the longer screen, which allows an extra row of icons. It may not seem exciting, but it’s more comfortable in the hand and also while holding the handset to your ear.
The 16:9 ratio means widescreen videos can be played within minimal letterboxing, if any.
Apple has increased the colour-saturation specs of the retina display although the resolution is the same as the previous 4S and 4 models.
It looks more sophisticated with shiny angled edges and aluminium replacing the glass back. But buy a cover to avoid scratches.
The A6 chip delivers faster app loading, too. Resuming a Grand Theft Auto III saved game from the
main menu took seven seconds on an iPhone 5 compared with 13seconds for an iPhone 4S.
Another major upgrade is 4G compatibility, which provides faster data downloads and uploads on websites and Facebook.
Users can download apps to 50Mb using mobile networks.
Downloading a 44.3Mb app took an average 22 seconds using the iPhone 5 connected to Telstra’s 4G LTE network while the same app took an average 50 seconds to download using an iPhone 4S connected to the Telstra 3G network.
At the moment, 4G is restricted to areas close to capital city CBDs.
iPhone 5’s camera does not produce higher-resolution photos than the 4S but redesigned optics provide improvement in low light.
One iPhone 5 exclusive feature is the ability to snap a photograph while you are recording video by pressing an onscreen shutter button.
Battery life has been the bugbear of Apple’s iPhones and, while things have not significantly improved, they have not got worse. Apple says the iPhone 5’s life battery life is “comparable” with the iPhone 4S.

If you are still getting around with an iPhone 3GS and are still in love with Apple, what are you waiting for? Now is the time to upgrade.
For iPhone 4S users, your 24-month contract will likely be up soon. Buying outright is also an option as swapping to a nano-SIM is relatively easy.
In terms of hardware, the iPhone 5 processor is two generations better than the iPhone 4’s A4 chip.
